Come on, let's dip hop!

ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers introduced this hopping technology already 2013 at the EBC. Dip hopping means the addition of hop after wort cooling before start of fermentation. With this hopping technology they found the following results: hop enzymes do not contribute to main fermentation, myrcene levels in finished beers are very low, which was found favourable in this case. Also, the production of 2M3MB an onion type of flavour (derived from iso-alpha acid) is supressed due to a lower H2S content in the beer.

Brewery news USA: Craft brewing sector realizes 4% production growth last year
The Brewers Association (BA) — the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers — released on April 2 the annual growth figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry. In 2018, small and independent brewers collectively produced 25.9 million barrels and realized 4 percent total growth, increasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 13.2 percent.

Retail dollar value was estimated at $27.6 billion, representing 24.1 percent market share and 7 percent growth over 2017. Growth for small and independent brewers occurred in an overall down beer market, which dropped 1 percent by volume in 2018. The 50 fastest growing breweries delivered 10 percent of craft brewer growth. Craft brewers provided more than 150,000 jobs, an increase of 11 percent over 2017.

“Craft maintained a fairly stable growth rate in 2018 and continued to gain share in the beer market,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Small and independent brewers continue to serve as job creators, strong economic contributors, and community beacons.”

There were 7,346 craft breweries operating in 2018, including 4,521 microbreweries, 2,594 brewpubs, and 231 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there were 1,049 new brewery openings and 219 closings—a closing rate of 3 percent.

Brewery news Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel teams up with Founders Brewing to acquire 40% in Avery Brewing
Mahou San Miguel is upping its stake in Colorado’s Avery Brewing, and the Spanish beer company has teamed up with its other U.S. craft brewery partner, Michigan’s Founders Brewing, on the new investment, Brewbound reported on April 2.

Mahou, along with Founders, will purchase a 40 percent stake in Avery Brewing for an undisclosed sum.

The newly acquired stake will be combined with Mahou’s original 30 percent minority interest in Avery that was purchased in early 2018.

The deal, which was negotiated over “the last few months,” gives Mahou and Founders a 70 percent controlling interest in the Colorado craft brewery.

Brewery founder Adam Avery and his father, Larry, will own the remaining 30 percent of the business, but executives from Mahou will now play a bigger role in the “day-to-day” decision making, Adam Avery told Brewbound.

“We can use all the expertise we can get,” he said. “There is some crazy shit going on in our industry, and it is awesome to have investors who look at this as a long-term play and not as a short-term, turn-and-burn type of thing.

“They think generationally,” he added.

Mahou also owns a separate 30 percent stake in Founders, which was ranked by the Brewers Association as the 14th ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Experts forecast malting barley acreage increase this year
Industry experts expect malting barley acreage in Western Canada to increase by about five per cent this year, supported by strong prices for both feed and malt, the Manitoba Co-Operator reported on April 1.

“All indications suggest we’ll see an increase in malt barley, as well as feed,” confirmed Peter Watts of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre.

In light of China’s consummate ban of Canadian canola, some worry other commodities will be treated similarly. However, there aren’t yet any indications that that is the case for malting barley.

According to Statistics Canada, China’s demand for barley and malt is expected to increase steadily due to China’s lower grain production due to urbanization and limited farmland.

“It’s impossible to predict what will happen but there aren’t any indications that Canadian malt barley will be shunned to the same extent as Canadian canola,” he said.

Though China has a history of importing the majority of its barley and malt from Australia, Canadian-grown malt is steadily increasing its market share.

Australia grew 60 per cent of China’s imported barley in 2016, while Canada accounted for 20 per cent. However, given Australia’s inclement weather in recent years, Canada has gained some of the market share in China.

Brewery news USA, CT: The Center Street Brewing Co. officially launched in Wallingford
Wallingford resident Peter Ford remembers the first batch of beer he brewed 30 years ago, the Meriden Record-Journal reported on March 31.

“It was a maple nut brown ale. It turned out fantastic. I think I got lucky the first time,” he said.

Ford, 53, turned what was once a hobby into a new business. His new venture, The Center Street Brewing Co., is the latest entry in the town center’s vibrant food and drink scene. It opened on March 30 and less than an hour after the opening the place was full.

“It has been a long process of planning a lot of small and big details, an emotional process throughout all the planning. Today is more of a feeling of happiness and readiness,” he said. “Seeing the doors open and seeing people in here feels right.”

Ford said the brewery has been gestating for six years — the time it took to navigate the permitting process and get everything ready for launch.

“It came together nicely,” he said.

The brewery’s home, 25 Wallace Ave., has had many incarnations, Ford said. It was at different points an artist’s studio, a recording studio, and an auto repair shop, among other things. His immediate goal was to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Assembly Brewing opens its doors in Portland
Assembly Brewing, co-founded by George Johnson and Adam Dixon, officially opened its doors for the grand opening on Friday, March 29 at 11 a.m., Brewbound reported.

Located at 6112 SE Foster Road in Portland, the highly-anticipated 15 barrel capacity brewery invites 21 and older patrons to enjoy authentic Detroit-style pizza while sampling a selection of seven beers available on day one, with more to come.

Four years in the making, it is the first craft brewery to open on Foster Road, located just northwest of the intersection at Holgate Blvd, and it is one of the few minority owned breweries in the country.

The tap list included seven beers at opening (two pale ales, two IPAs, an amber, stout and porter), all easy drinking and balanced beers that range from 5.5-6.5 percent ABV and are brewed to pair with the restaurant’s pizza. Alongside the signature ales, created by head brewer and neighborhood resident George Johnson, local Cider Riot cider on tap, wines and a selection of hand made cocktails and spirits are also available. Draught beer is $5 per pint and well drinks are available for $5.

The 7,500 square-foot facility features a 15 BBL capacity brew house supported by old-growth Doug Fir ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Common Block Brewing to open own brewery
Nearly four years in the making, Common Block Brewing in Medford is finally becoming an on-site brewing company, KOBI-TV NBC5 reported on March 29.

The restaurant recently bought a used brewhouse and the equipment arrived fresh off the truck on March 29.

Common Block currently contract brews off-site.

They said they’re excited to start making their beer on location for everyone to enjoy.

“We’ll start by obviously supplying the restaurant with our own beers,” said head brewer John Donehower, “and hopefully we’ll have a little extra capacity and we’ll be able to distribute beers to other areas in the valley, and who knows after that.”

The equipment is in the process of being put together, it should be ready to go soon.

Brewery news USA, FL: Construction of Ravenous Pig Brewing Company to be completed this summer
The Ravenous Pig owners James and Julie Petrakis will be opening a new brewery next to their Winter Park restaurant this summer, the Orlando Weekly reported on March 29.

The James Beard semi-finalist restaurateurs are also launching their own exclusive beer label, the Ravenous Pig Brewing Company, to be headed by their current brewmaster, Larry Foor.

"When we opened and started brewing beer, we were only one of a few craft breweries in Orlando," James Petrakis says in a statement. "Now there are close to 30 craft breweries in the area. We want to celebrate the fact that we are growing and the demand for our beer is there after almost a decade of brewing."

The 3,000-square-foot brewery will be six times bigger than the current five-barrel brewing system that the restaurant at 565 W. Fairbanks Ave. is using, according to a press release. The Petrakises say the new brewery will be the distribution hub for The Ravenous Pig, as well as The Polite Pig at Disney Springs and the Cask & Larder location at the Orlando International Airport.

"Ravenous Pig Brewing Company will feature a 15-barrel system, with 30-barrel fermenters," the release says. "Brewmaster Foor will continue to use ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Trillium Brewing brewing up big expansion plan
Trillium is brewing up a big expansion plan that will take the craft beer company to new locations in Canton and the Fenway, The Boston Globe reported on March 29.

Cofounders Esther and JC Tetreault on March 28 confirmed the craft brewer has acquired a 19-acre section of the former Reebok campus on Royall Street in Canton from Spear Street Capital. They plan to convert a nearly 140,000-square-foot industrial building into a brewery and restaurant, with room for offices, storage, and event space.

They said the property will eventually allow them to consolidate two much-smaller leased spaces in Canton, as well as warehouse spaces in Avon and Taunton, into one location.

“Now, we can build a custom brewery that has enough to space to accommodate everything we want to do there,” Esther Tetreault said. “The new building gives us the space to bring all of that under one roof and design it in a more customer-friendly, efficient manner so everything is where it should be as opposed to where it can fit.”

Owning the property, as opposed to leasing, also gives the company more control over its future. And JC Tetreault said the new location would provide ample parking, unlike its current primary brewery, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: State Street Brewery coming to Bristol
Something is brewing in Bristol, VA, WCYB reported on March 29.

What was formerly Hayes Furniture on State Street is now State Street Brewery.

"We are thrilled to be a part of the revitalization of downtown" says Debi Denney.

Debi and her husband Larry, longtime Bristol residents, bought the old building.

It's mostly a family business they initially looked to start in Cincinnati.

"There's sixty breweries in Cincinnati last we counted" says Kodi Pierson. "It's a very saturated market."

Through family connections, they looked to Bristol.

"Revitalizing buildings go well with what craft beer is" says Kent Pierson. "It's a community thing. It's an artsy thing. Taking something like this you will never find something like this."

The craft beer scene is growing quickly in the region.

When State Street Brewery opens for business, it'll be the thirteenth craft brewery in the Tri-Cities, the fifth in the last four years, and the third in Downtown Bristol.

They don't view themselves competing against other businesses.

"Really in the brew scene you're helping each other out. It's one giant community and we're one big brotherhood and we're all after the same thing" Kent says. "Good beer. Keeping those cultures alive and really serving something up people want to enjoy."

The goal is to make ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Heineken USA to pay record $2.5 million fine to settle trade practice violations
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) announced on April 2 the acceptance of a record $2.5 million offer in compromise from Heineken USA Incorporated for alleged trade practice violations outlined in the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act, Brewbound reported.

Heineken USA’s (HUSA) payment is the largest offer in compromise that the federal agency has ever accepted, TTB spokesman Thomas Hogue confirmed to Brewbound.

According to the TTB, HUSA supplied alcohol retailers with its proprietary “BrewLock” draft systems at no cost between August 1, 2015, and March 26, 2019.

HUSA also reimbursed retailers who purchased the so-called “patented” and “revolutionary” on-premise technology through “disguised” credit card transactions.

Through its investigation — which began in Florida as a joint operation between the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, and later expanded to the state of Washington and New York City – the TTB determined that Heineken was in violation of the FAA Act, specifically subsection 205 “unfair competition and unlawful practices.”

In a press release, the TTB said the BrewLock systems were designed to only dispense products packaged in unique kegs used by HUSA, which subsequently induced retailers into purchasing offerings made by the global brewing entity.

Additionally, the TTB accused Heineken’s U.S. importing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Iron Triangle Brewing is up for sale
After roughly three years after opening, Iron Triangle Brewing, have elected to place the startup brewery for sale as a turnkey production brewery / taproom destination package, TheFullPint.com reported on March 29.

Iron Triangle Brewing started out with big fanfare, as the Arts District of Los Angeles has become a destination for younger beer drinkers. With Arts District Brewing, Mumford Brewing and many outlying craft beer bars to choose from, this once grim area has become a hotspot on the weekends. Many can speculate to the quick rise and fall of this business, Iron Triangle employed a risky model of building a big fancy brewery with the hopes of growing into it as opposed to starting small and growing demand and good will.

When pressed as to why the owners have chosen to sell this new brewery, COO/CFO Kale Bittner responded by saying “The owners have decided that their capital would be better invested in their other businesses.”

Brewery news USA, MA: Lefty’s Brewing Co. to close forever on April 14
Lefty’s Brewing Co. — the Franklin County microbrewery known for its Wedding Daze Stout and Doc’s Double Whammy IPA among other beers — will close forever on April 14, MassLive.com reported.

A notice on the brewery’s website, leftysbrew.com, says that it will have a going-out-of-business sale at its taproom on 301 Wells St., Greenfield.

In just a few hours on March 29, the closing notice garnered more than 300 messages of thanks and support from fans and customers.

“We are so sorry to say goodbye, but we must,” owners Bill "Lefty" Goldfarb and wife, Melissa Goldfarb, wrote in the statement. “We are so sorry to say goodbye, but we must. We do hope you respect our privacy at this time. But have no worries. We are very much looking forward to what’s to come for our family. Melissa has also been experiencing health issues that encouraged our decision to take life by the bullhorns and live to the fullest.”

The Goldfarbs encouraged fans to clean out the Lefty’s supplies at package stores or to get one of the last kegs available. Anyone with a Lefty’s keg has until May 15 to return it or Lefty’s will keep the deposit and the customer can keep ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Beer price could double due to ‘severe’ weather events and global warming - study
Beer could double in price in the UK as a result of 'severe' weather events and global warming, according to a new international study from climate scientists, The Sun reported on April 1.

This price rise would be driven by global shortages of barley, which would have the effect of reducing beer production throughout the globe.

The research, published in the Nature Plants journal, was carried out by scientists from the US, China, and Mexico, as well as from the University of East Anglia in the UK.

They reached their conclusions by modelling the effects of climate change on the global production of barley, which is used to make beer.

They then worked out the impact of a decline in barley production on the supply, price and consumption of beer in 34 international regions.

And for the UK, they found that Brits would see a drop of anything from 0.37 billion to 1.33 billion litres in the amount of beer they drink every year, while they could have to pay double the normal price for a pint.

In the worst-case scenario, the UK would drink 2.34 billion fewer pints a year, while they'd have to pay £7.20 for a pint on average or over £10 in ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Beer excises hike to make business environment more difficult for drinks giants
For brewing giants AB InBev SA, Heineken BV and Diageo Plc competing for market share in Africa’s most populous country, the Nigerian government’s decision to hike excise duties is another setback in an under-performing economy, Bloomberg reported on April 2.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration followed up its June decision to impose taxes on beer and spirits by deciding in January to implement another phased 17 percent increase in duties on alcoholic beverages. The move, a bid in part to counter flagging revenue from the key oil industry, is making the business environment more difficult for the drink giants in an economy that contracted in 2016 and has faced double-digit inflation since then.

The analysis is based on information on the UK market and the report covered the growth and decline of different beer styles.

Pricing was another area the report looked into and found, for the past two years, prices have risen steadily for craft beer by approximately 2%.

Between 2016 and 2017, there was a rise of 9% but this was likely to have been influenced by the drop in the value of the pound, making imported items such as many hop varieties and kegs more expensive, with this being passed on to the customer.

The report discovered a drop in market share of craft beer for traditional styles from 14% to 5%.

Another trend the report highlighted was ...More info on site
