Spent hops for haze stability
ABSTRACT
It is not totally surprising that hops might be the
solution to another challenge many brewers have, a
stable haze! US researchers looked into the
usage of spent hops to increase haze stability. Not only
did the spent hop extract show potential to scavenge
free radicals; it was also found that haze stability in
Pale Ale can be increased by the addition of spent hop
extract (0.3-0.5% v/v). Although total protein content
in spent hop extract is extremely low to participate in
haze stability, Procyanidin B2 and Epicatechin found in
spent hops are haze active and antioxidants.

USA: Brewers Association publishes list of fastest-growing craft breweries of 2018
|
The rankings of the biggest breweries in the US don’t change dramatically from year to year. AB InBev is always atop the list. And Yuengling leads the craft brewing category. But when it comes to the nation’s fastest growing breweries, things get a bit more interesting.
The Brewer’s Association has announced this year’s list of the small and independent beer makers whose production has increased the most in the past year. And Lake Time Brewery from Clear Lake, Iowa tops the list.
There’s a fair chance you haven’t heard of Lake Time, even if you’re a craft beer enthusiast, unless you live in the area. That’s likely true of most of the 50 breweries on the list.

USA, CO: Lost Friend Brewing Company plans official opening on April 6
|
Lost Friend Brewing Company plans to finally open its doors on Saturday, April 6, at 2458 Montebello Square Drive in Colorado Springs following almost an entire year of unforeseen delays, the Colorado Springs Independent reported on March 20.
“We’re taking a lot of time to really make sure the beer is right,” says co-owner and brewer Andy France. “The quality wasn’t there just yet and now we’re really in the groove.”
Expect a “good mix” of beers that consists of eight flagships and experimental offerings with a strong focus on lagers and IPAs. France hopes his guests embrace their “coffee shop-esque” vibe. He says they’re “trying to go for a really homey feel where you want to stay, work, read a book or play a board game.”
An entire wall features built-in shelves that “will be jam- packed with books,” next to oversized couches, large tables ideal for big groups to gather around and a 20-foot horseshoe- shaped bar.
“We put a lot of work into the aesthetic things, but focusing on high quality beers, that’ll really be what makes us stand out,” says France.

USA & Belize: Hobbs Brewing Company launches brewery in Belize
|
Hobbs Brewing Company announced on March 19 the launch of its new brewery in Belize, Brewbound reported.
Hobbs Brewing Co., which opened as brewpub in New Hampshire, in 2014, will begin distribution with 12 oz. cans and kegs throughout Placencia, Belize, in April.
“We recognized that this area really needed craft beer,” said Ash Fischbein, a partner of Hobbs Brewing Company. “And we started to put it all into motion last year.” Placencia is a small village located in the Stann Creek district of Belize. Placencia has a population of approximately 3,500, but is a prime vacation destination and home to many new resorts and other businesses.
Hobbs will feature two beers as it begins production in Central America: Wildcat IPA and Hummingbird Belizean Golden Ale.
Wildcat IPA, so named because Belize is home to the world’s largest Jaguar preserve, is a 6 percent ABV India Pale Ale featuring a tropical and citrusy hop character. Wildcat is the only IPA available in the country. Meanwhile, Hummingbird is a light, crisp and easy-to drink ale that is just 4.7 percent ABV.
They will be sampling these beers at the upcoming Easter Festival in the Village of Placencia on April 20.

USA, TN: Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Company to open under same roof in Nashville
|
Two east Tennessee staples are opening locations in Nashville under the same roof, WVLT.TV reported on March 21.
Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Company are opening a location in an indoor/outdoor development in Nashville's SoBro neighborhood.
The facility will be unique on multiple levels, with some of the buildings made out of shipping containers.
Renderings of the new location, which will be at 6th Avenue and Peabody Street in Nashville, shows a rooftop bar, restaurants, tasting rooms, and a tasting or music venue.
The new development was originally scheduled to open in late 2018.

USA, CA: Santa Ana River Brewing Company debuts in Santa Ana
|
The Santa Ana River Brewing Company has debuted at 3480 W. Warner, Suite B in Santa Ana, Hoodline reported on March 24.
The new addition comes courtesy of Geoff Brand and Mike Miller, explains the business on its website, who created the spot in an "effort to craft hop-forward ales in the great tradition of West Coast brewing."
Offerings include Belgian-style ales and IPAs, along with nitro stouts like the Tig Nibbies made with organic cacao and vanilla.
The Santa Ana River Brewing Company has gotten an enthusiastic response thus far, with a five-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp.
Harvey G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on March 14, wrote, "This new spot has not disappointed! Good beer and a great atmosphere — can't wait for whats to come!"
“Brand new small intimate brewery with awesome beers!" added Yelper Jim H. "The owners and the staff are awesome. Lots of hoppy ales, IPAs and stouts.”
Santa Ana River Brewing Company is open from 3–9 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday and noon–9 p.m. on Friday-Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)

USA, FL: Civil Society Brewing opens its doors in Jupiter
|
Civil Society Brewing has officially opened its doors at 425 Kanuga Drive in Flamingo Park, Jupiter, Hoodline reported on March 25.
This spot, which has a sister location in nearby Jupiter, offers a variety of craft beers including an IPA called Ball Don't Lie. Some of the beers are available in 32-ounce growlers. Fun fact: the tanks at Civil Society Brewing are named after family members.
Civil Society Brewing is open from 3 a.m.–11 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday, noon–midnight on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)

USA, MA: Distraction Brewing launches Kickstarter campaign for Roslindale location
|
When Mike Estey, Patrick French, and Justin Garnache met a decade ago through their preschoolers, they discovered that they had more in common than packing lunches and shuttling kids to and from school. All three were passionate about beer and home-brewing, and decided to try their hand at brewing beer together, Boston.com reported on March 24.
They called their venture Distraction Brewing, paying tribute to “the idea that craft beer has been a pleasant distraction in each of our lives,” French said.
On Sunday, March 24 Distraction launched a Kickstarter campaign to secure additional funding for the brewery’s first taproom, projected to open in May at 2 Belgrade Ave. in Roslindale. The team is already in the final stages of the build-out, and French said that the Kickstarter isn’t necessary to open the brewery, but to maximize the output of beer. The fundraising page details how the money raised will go toward upgrading equipment like a hot liquor tank, mash tun, and boil kettle, along with improving taproom amenities like the sound system.
“This is really about being able to increase our capacity to meet more of a demand than what we originally thought,” French said.

USA: Diageo to bring its Roe & Co. Irish whiskey to the US
|
Spirits giant Diageo, early in 2017, unveiled a rather ambitious Irish whiskey plan that included building itself a new distillery in Dublin, Ireland, as well as releasing a new blended Irish whiskey known as Roe & Co. Fast forward two years later and both aspects of this are well under way, so much so that there are now designs on bringing the whiskey to American shores, The Whiskey Wash reported on March 25.
Roe & Co., according to those behind it, is a non-chill filtered Irish whiskey offering that’s been bottled at 45% ABV, or 90 proof. It’s named in honor of George Roe, a whiskey maker of note from the 19th century. This modern day version of his namesake spirit was crafted by Diageo master blender Caroline Martin and her team from stocks of “the very finest Irish whiskies.”
Martin also worked with a group of “hand-picked Irish bartenders who represent some of Dublin’s most celebrated cocktail establishments” in putting together this expression, targeting it towards cocktail use as part of a major focus.

USA, CA: Golden Road Brewing Co.’s brewpub closed after fire
|
Golden Road Brewing Co.’s midtown Sacramento brewpub is temporarily closed for an unknown amount of time after a fire on March 20, the company said.
The fire’s cause is not yet known, director of pub operations Adam Levoe wrote in an email. The open-air brewpub made from shipping containers has a small kitchen with a grill, deep fryer and stovetops.
“We’re grateful for the local fire department for responding so quickly and thankful that no one was on site at the time and no one was injured during the incident,” Levoe wrote. “The safety of our guests and staff is our number one priority and we are working with the local authorities who are investigating the cause.”
Golden Road was closed on St. Patrick’s Day due to a maintenance issue, according to the bar’s Facebook page. It wouldn’t have opened on March 20 even without the fire because of inclement weather.

South Africa: AB InBev says alcohol consumption sinks due to rising fuel costs and VAT hike
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s biggest brewer, whose flagship brands include Castle Lager and Budweiser, said on March 25 that South Africa’s booze consumption sank last year as rising fuel costs and the VAT hike put pressure on cash strapped consumers, the Independent Online reports.
The company said in its 2018 annual report released on March 25 that top and bottom line performances were below its expectations in Argentina, Brazil and South Africa, largely as a result of a weak macroeconomic environment putting pressure on the consumer in all three markets.
It said the macroeconomic and consumer environment in South Africa were challenging last year.
“The VAT increase as of April 1, 2018, numerous petrol price increases and rising unemployment levels continued to have a negative impact on consumer disposable income, which put disproportionate pressure on the core segment where our portfolio is over-indexed,” the company said.
It said its premium portfolio continued to grow by triple digits and it gained 10 percentage points of market share in the growing high end segment this year.

India: Court allows liquidator to sell Mallya’s United Breweries shares worth Rs 1,000 crore
|
In a major step to partly recover outstanding dues from Vijay Mallya, a Prevention of Money Laundering Act court rejected United Breweries Holdings Ltd.'s plea to stay the proposed sale of shares worth around Rs 1,000 crore of its erstwhile subsidiary United Breweries by a court-appointed liquidator, BloombergQuint reported on March 26.
Special judge MS Azmi rejected their plea on the ground that the court may not have the powers to grant a stay on the proposed sale.
This is the first sale of Mallya’s confiscated assets by the authorities since he left the country in March 2016.
United Breweries shares closed over 2 percent up on the BSE at Rs 1,347.90 on March 26 and the sale of 74.04 lakh shares at this price would fetch around Rs 999 crore.
Beermaker Heineken is the largest shareholder of UBL with a 44 percent stake. Earlier this month, it approached the State Bank of India to sell them, following which the bank moved the Karnataka High Court seeking rights over a 2.8 percent stake in UBL on March 18.
The shares are currently held by a court-appointed liquidator and was previously owned by UBHL, the erstwhile holding company of all firms owned by Mallya.

Italy: Birra Peroni closes 2018 with 6.4% production increase
|
Italian brewery Birra Peroni closed 2018 with a 6.4% of growth in production compared to the previous year, to six million hectolitres, ESM reported on March 22.
Over the last four years, beer production at the firm rose by 19.46%, while CO2 emissions decreased by 11.94%, the company said.
Exports of Birra Peroni increased by 11% in 2018 compared to 2017, with an overall value of 2.1 million hectolitres.
More than half (60%) of exports went to Great Britain, which is the main export market for the Italian brewery.
The group's Rome factory reported the strongest growth in production, seeing an increase of 10.7% compared to 2017 and reaching a high of 2.5 million hectolitres.
According to Roberto Cavalli, integrated supply chain director of Birra Peroni, the company boasts great industrial experience, enabling it to distinguish itself in both national and international markets.
The positive performances of the Italian brewery also coincide with the company's commitment to sustainability, Cavalli added.
Due to a number of investments in its production facilities, CO2 emissions at Peroni decreased from 5.19 Kg CO2/Hl in 2015 to 4.57 Kg CO2/Hl in 2018.
The company also reported that electricity and water consumption has dropped steadily over the past four years.

Brazil: Grupo Petrópolis to build new brewery in Minas Gerais
|
Grupo Petrópolis, Brazil’s third-largest beer maker, is planning a new brewery in Uberaba, Minais Gerais (the north of Southeastern Brazil), Catalisi reported on March 25.
The facility, expected to take 54 ha, is scheduled to be launched by April 2020. Total investments in the project are expected at around R$800 mln.
This will be Grupo Petrópolis’ eighth brewery in the country, in addition to the facilities in Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro), Teresópolis (Rio de Janeiro, Boituva (Sao Paulo), Bragança Paulista (Sao Paulo), Rondonópolis (Mato Grosso), Alagoinhas (Bahia), and Itapissuma (Pernambuco).

South Korea: South Korea launches probe into beer importers
|
South Korea has launched a probe into Heineken Korea Co. and AE Brands Korea for allegedly manipulating beer import prices to pay lower tariffs, the country's top customs official said on March 26.
Kim Yung-moon, commissioner of the Korea Customs Service (KCS), said in a parliamentary finance committee session that the two companies are suspected of having paid lower tariffs by marking down import prices. They then sold the beer at higher prices to consumers.
He said the KCS will treat the cases "sternly" based on the results of the probe. The official did not provide details on the probe.
South Korea imposes a basic 30 percent tariff on imported beers, but the tariff rate is lowered to 3.7 percent for European beers due to Seoul's free trade agreement with the European Union.
Officials of Heineken Korea and AE Brands Korea, which is also known as Pilsner Urquell Korea, were not immediately available for comment.
Pilsner Urquell Korea was created following the merger of the Asahi and SABMiller European brands in 2017. It has individual beer brands, including Pilsner Urquell, Kozel Dark, Peroni and Grolsch.

Namibia: Namibia Breweries silent about future of King Lager brand

Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, remains tight lipped about the future of its much-hyped locally produced beer, King Lager, amid indications from insiders the brand is struggling to make traction in the highly competitive beer market, observer.com.na reported on March 25.
The future of the brand also determines the future of its agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and the Agricultural Business Development Agency (AgriBusDev), where the company committed to buy all the barley harvested from an irrigation project in the Kavango region, with a 10-year target of 12,000 hectares and projected employment creation of 2,500 Namibian job opportunities over a 10-year period.
Launched more than three years ago, King Lager, according to the company, was to be the first ever commercially brewed beer that uses Namibian barley and was expected to become a game changer for the giant brewer.
“We are continuously finding new ways to innovate our brands, however, due to business confidentiality, we cannot divulge further information,” NBL Finance Director, Graeme Mouton said.
