Canada: Molson Coors begins works on new brewery in Longueil
|
It’s official, work has begun on the new C$500-million Molson Coors brewery in south shore Longueuil, Globalnews.ca reported on October 19.
At a ground-breaking ceremony on October 19, supply manager Matthew Hook said it will be the company’s most modern brewing facility and distribution centre.
The company announced last year it was leaving the Montreal site on Notre-Dame Street where it opened a brewery in 1786 to build a new operation in Longueuil.
At the time, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante expressed her disappointment at the move.
But Molson Coors Canada argues it represents one of the largest investments in the company’s 230-year history and demonstrates its commitment to the Greater Montreal area.
It is expected that anywhere between 500 and 800 workers will be required to build the state-of-art facility and that local trades, contractors and operators are a crucial component.
Additionally, the company plans on maintaining its administrative offices at the Montreal site.
Hook also stressed how the new plant will address environmental concerns.
“The new brewery will be equipped with improved technologies that will allow us to reduce our energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and carbon footprint such as optimized equipment layouts to reduce beer loss and waste and a state-of-the-art carbon dioxide recovery system,” he

USA: MillerCoors lays out new corporate structure
|
MillerCoors on October 22 laid out a new corporate structure that the company said will create a leaner, more nimble organization with the financial flexibility to invest more in its brands and capitalize on new opportunities.
As part of a restructuring announced last month, MillerCoors eliminated about 375 positions, in part by not filling about 150 open roles. A majority of the remainder were via a voluntary severance program. Many will use the severance as a bridge to retirement, MillerCoors CEO Gavin Hattersley said in notes sent today to distributors and employees. He said the company accepted nearly all employees who raised their hands to take the voluntary package.
“We took a hard look at how we could create an organization that could make decisions faster and move more quickly, and we realigned our business accordingly,” Hattersley said. “Our new structure is now in place and we believe it positions us well moving forward.”
The changes also included significant reshuffling of the MillerCoors marketing organization, which includes several major changes to its leadership team. The company appointed new leaders for its economy brands portfolio and the Coors family of brands.
Ryan Reis returns to brand marketing, taking over the Coors family of brands after

Canada: Barley output forecast 4% higher in 2018/19
|
For 2018-19, Canada’s barley-seeded area is forecast to increase by 13% from last year’s record low of 2.334 mln ha, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its latest report on October 19.
Production is forecast to increase 4% to 8.2 million tonnes (Mt) due to the higher harvested area, despite a below average total yield.
Due to sharply lower carry-in stocks, total supply is forecast to decrease by 5% to 9.5 Mt.
Total domestic use is forecast to increase by 3% to 6.148 Mt due to slightly higher feed and industrial use.
Exports are expected to decrease by 17% to 2.4 Mt due to lower total supplies.
Carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 20% to a near record-low level of 1.0 Mt.
The Lethbridge cash feed barley price is forecast to average 15% higher than 2017-18.
The average barley yield in Canada is estimated to be below the previous three and five-year averages. Compared to the August 31 survey-based estimate, the model-based estimate increased barley production by 235,000 tonnes or 3%.
Since the beginning of the crop year, feed barley has been moving into the Alberta elevator system at a premium to feed wheat. The price outlook remains good since many regions

Ukraine: Barley exports drop 35% in Q1 2018/19
|
Barley exports from Ukraine decreased 35% in Q1 2018/19 (July-September), to 2.0 mln tonnes against 3.1 mln tonnes shipped abroad in the same period last year, UkrAgroConsult reported on October 23.
The first quarter of MY 2018/19 features some changes in the range of export destinations for Ukrainian barley. Apart from traditional major end markets (Saudi Arabia and China), this season’s top five biggest barley importers included Japan, Tunisia and Egypt. At the same time, compared to Q1 2017/18, barley exports to Saudi Arabia dropped by 5% and those to China fell by 55%.
On the other hand, Egypt already imported 64.2 thousand tonnes of Ukrainian barley in July-September following minimum imports in MY 2016/17 and no purchases in MY 2017/18. Barley supplies to Japan increased 275%, to Tunisia - up 249%.
September shipments of Ukrainian barley were 34% less than in the previous month.
