Brewery news Nigeria: Competition on the rise with the arrival of Budweiser in Nigeria
According to a report by a market research group, Global Data, Africa is the fastest growing region for beer consumption. Nigeria, however, leads the pack of 10 biggest beer drinking countries on the continent. Beer brands make up just 16 percent of alcohol consumption in the country, while other drinks (spirits and locally brewed drinks) make up 84 percent, the Nairametrics reported on July 19.

Until recently, the race for the biggest beer market share in the country was a two-horse race between Heineken N.V., owners of Nigerian Breweries Plc and Diageo, owners of Guinness Nigeria.

The narrative seems to have changed with the recent introduction of new products such as Budweiser, dubbed as the king of beers, from the stables of AB InBev, the parent company of International Breweries, into the Nigerian market. The battle now seems to be among three international players, which many have termed as the “Triangular Beer War”.

This article seeks to examine how major players in the beer business are handling the stiff competition and get a feel of consumers’ pulse about the new beer product, Budweiser.

The year 2011 ushered in a disruption in the beer market with the arrival of SABMiller, which was then the world’s ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries to pay 18% GST on profit from beer manufacturing units
United Breweries (UBL), which makes beer under the Kingfisher brand, is liable to pay an 18% GST on 'surplus profit' received from beer manufacturing units contracted by it to make and sell alcohol beverage under its brand name, the Financial Express reported on July 19 citing a ruling passed by Authority of Advanced Ruling (AAR) in Karnataka.

The order is likely to dent the profit of UBL as the tax would be inadmissible as input tax credit because potable alcohol is outside the GST ambit. “This payment of 18% GST on collections made by brand owner from brewery would burden the supply chain with additional tax. This tax payment would be non-creditable as the final product i.e. potable alcohol is outside the ambit of the GST,” Rajat Mohan, partner at AMRG & Associates, said.

Beer under the brands owned by UBL is manufactured by contract brewing/bottling plants (CBU), which also supply the product in the market. CBUs retain a part of profit from beer sales and pass on the ‘surplus profit’ to the brand owner.

UBL had approached the AAR to clarify GST applicability on profit earned by CBUs and its own share of sales proceeds. The authority concluded that CBUs are not ...More info on site
