WHATEVER IRON MALT BRINGS IN - HOPS CAN FIX IT!

ABSTRACT
A German research team discovered a couple of years ago that hops act as a chelator for iron, and this can help to improve oxidative stability. Their most recent work investigates hops capability of reducing iron in the brewing process from different special malt types. The results of their study indicate that this only works for a certain amount of accessible iron.

Hops news USA: Hop acreage forecast at record 53,282 acres this year
U.S. hop acreage is forecast at a record 53,282 acres this year, up 4 percent over last year, with new acreage and plantings entering full production.

The 2018 forecast for Washington is 39,273 acres, which is 71 percent of total U.S. acreage, according to a July 2 report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Idaho is projected at 8,217 acres, or 15 percent of the total, and Oregon is projected at 7,849 acres, or 14 percent. Idaho shows the largest increase in acreage, up 1,224 acres, or 17.5 percent.

Mike Gooding, president of Gooding Farms north of Wilder, Idaho, and vice chairman of the Idaho Hop Growers Commission, said the state’s additional acreage this year primarily consists of hops contracted two years ago that are finally being established.

“A lot of times, growers are not able to establish all acres in one season,” Gooding said. “And we have a couple of new growers in the area. They established part of their acreage last year and part this year.”

Washington state is up 835 acres, or 2 percent, and Oregon is unchanged.

Expansion of small craft breweries fueled an increase in aroma hop varieties for several years but that’s slowed as the rate of craft brewery growth ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Harris Family Brewery coming to Harrisburg soon
Three partners are bringing the state's first black-owned craft brewery to Allison Hill, Harrisburg, PennLive.com reported on July 4.

Harris Family Brewery plans to open an urban craft brewery in 2019 at Market and 13th streets in Harrisburg.

"Some people may look at it from the outside and think that it's run down or it's a rough neighborhood. It's not really like that, it's a lot of love in this neighborhood and we're going to bring out," Shaun Harris, co-owner of Harris Family Brewery, told ABC Channel 27.

The partners said they still have work to do on the property as well as obtain licensing.

They started home brewing small batches in Harrisburg.

"Yeah we're crazy alright, crazy about doing something new, something different something that would pop off and set us apart from the rest of the hustlers and entrepreneurs in our neighborhood," reads their website.

They list beers including Formula 58, an American White Ale; HF Lager, a dark lager; and Bando Black, a dark chocolate American ale.

Harris Family recently partnered with ZeroDay Brewing Co. on a collaboration beer called "It's Poppin," an Imperial Cream Ale. The beer will be poured at an outdoor screening of "Poured in PA" July 3 at Midtown Cinema ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: O.T. Brewing releases its first beers
A new sports-themed brewery in Calgary has announced the release of its first beers, the Canadian Beer News reported on July 4.

O.T. Brewing has entered the market with two hazy and hop-forward beers: 5 Hundie Hazy IPA (6.5% abv), which “has notes of peach and cotton candy on the nose followed by suggestions of mango and papaya on the palate”; and Flagstick Hazy Pale Ale (5.2% abv), which is “refreshingly dry and light-bodied with notes of ripe pineapple, clementine oranges, and a hint of spruce.”

Both beers are available now in cans and on draught at select retailers and licensees in Calgary. They will also be available at the O.T. Brewing taproom and retail shop which is expected to open later this month at 1155 44 Ave SE in Calgary’s Highfield neighbourhood.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev to import its international craft beer brands to the US
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has announced plans to import its international craft beer brands to the US, Drinks Insight Network reported on July 3.

The company has obtained clearance from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for some of the international craft beer variants, which will be introduced to the market at an AB InBev-sponsored craft beer and music festival that is scheduled to take place later this year in New York, US.

Set to begin selling in the US this year, the brands include draft beer labels from Camden Town Brewery in the UK, Cervejaria Colorado of Brazil, Artesanas de Malta y Cebada of Mexico, Newlands Spring Brewing of South Africa, Archibald Microbrewery of Canada and Belle-Vue Brouwerij of Belgium.

Each of the beers will be imported in kegs, while two brews from Archibald of Canada will also be packaged in pints.

AB InBev has not announced any plans to distribute and sell the beers beyond the US.

AB InBev’s new international craft beer range will join the Australian brand 4 Pines, the Spanish blend Cervezas La Virgen, and the Mexican import Bocanegra.

Brewery news USA, ME: Two longtime friends launching The NU Brewery in New Gloucester
Two longtime friends are “all in” on their partnership to create a brewery in New Gloucester, which they plan to open in October, KeepMECurrent.com reported on July 5.

The NU Brewery (pronounced “new”) will be located at 437 Lewiston Road in a 7,600-square-foot industrial building that was formerly home to a farm equipment company, and is currently being renovated.

The brewing business is a project two years in the making for President Chris Ventimiglia, who lives in Freeport, and CEO Russell Voss, who lives in New Gloucester.

Both have experimented with home-brewing over the years, but Voss called his partner “the creative genius” behind the NU beer.

“Everything we’ve done has been collaboration,” Ventimiglia said.

As the name indicates, the brewers are looking to do new things in an increasingly crowded Maine beer scene.

Their flagship beer will be a craft American light lager – a craft brewer’s take on light beer that the duo hopes will appeal to people who may not have a taste for heavier, hoppier craft beers.

“We found a category with our craft American light lager that no one’s doing anything with in Maine from a craft prospective,” Voss said. “Everybody’s really focused on IPAs and getting into stuff that’s session-oriented or ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Callister Brewing announces plans to close down
The longest-running partner brewery at Vancouver’s Callister Brewing has announced that it is ending its run and closing down, the Canadian Beer News reported on July 3.

Real Cask Brewing – a project from brewer Adam Chatburn focussed on cask-conditioned ales – was one of the original trio of co-brewers at Callister when the co-op-modelled brewery launched in 2015, and has remained for three year-long terms while the other two slots have rotated annually.

In an article written for the latest issue of What’s Brewing Magazine, Chatburn says that while he enjoyed his time working on Real Cask, he feels that it’s “time to move on and let someone else use Callister as a launching pad for their brewing dreams,” and that he is “considering a little break from the BC craft beer community” before deciding on his next move.

A closing party for Real Cask will be taking place at Callister on Sunday July 8th starting at 1:00 PM.

The end of Real Cask follows the recent shutdown of Callister’s two 2017-18 partners, MorningStar Brewing and Night Owl Brewing. New partner brewers for 2018-19 are expected to be announced soon.

Brewery news Brazil: Heineken fighting for bigger market share bar by bar
Sao Paulo bar owner Arthur Santi has long served up boatloads of ice-cold Skol, one of Brazil’s most popular beer brands and a mainstay of brewing giant Ambev SA, Reuters reported on July 5.

Then last year, rival Heineken NV made him an offer he could not turn down. Santi was launching another saloon in the same working-class neighborhood. The Dutch brewer wanted top billing for its products at the new location.

Heineken paid him 90,000 reais ($23,000) for a three-year commitment to sell Heineken as its only big-name premium beer. The company also threw in new refrigerators, tables and chairs, all emblazoned with its familiar green logo with the red star.

Bar by bar, Heineken is fighting for a bigger share of the world’s third-largest beer market and an end to Ambev’s dominance in Brazil.

While beer consumption has stagnated in much of the world, growth is still forecast for Latin America’s largest economy, which is why Brazil has become a key battleground for global brewers.

Heineken made a big move last year with its $1.2 billion purchase of the money-losing Brazil operations of Kirin Holdings Co Ltd. That transaction doubled Heineken’s market share to nearly 20 percent.

But to catch Ambev, which still controls ...More info on site

Barley news UK: AB InBev UK targets 100% British barley use by 2020
AB InBev now sources three quarters of its barley for UK-brewed Budweiser – the UK’s second biggest beer brand behind Stella Artois - from British farms thanks to its “Bud Farmers” innovative, the Drinks International reported on July 6.

The programme has improved UK farming practices and crop yields through the introduction of new barley seeds, such as the Explorer grain, which helps barley to grow in parts of the country previously unsuitable for this type of crop.

This has enabled AB InBev to scale up the amount of barley grown in the UK from 0 to 75% in four years.

Jason Warner, president of AB InBev UK & Ireland said: “Developing a British supply chain is good for farmers, good for the environment and good for our business.

“I’m proud to see that our Bud Farmers programme is boosting British agriculture and that we are helping farmers to increase and improve barley yields.” AB InBev produces more than 17 mln bottles and cans of Budweiser each week in the UK at its two breweries in Magor in south Wales and Samlesbury in Lancashire.

The scale of this production means that tens of thousands of tonnes of barley is needed each year to brew ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong: Number of craft breweries rises to more than 35
The number of craft beer brewers in Hong Kong has risen to more than 35 from none five years ago and many are betting on China's expanding market to fuel sales, especially as the mainland develops an economic zone just a few miles away, StreetInsider.com reported on July 3.

Under the Greater Bay Area initiative, China is planning to integrate nine southern Chinese cities with Hong Kong and Macau to create a region with a population of about 70 million and an economy that would be the world's fifth-biggest by 2030.

That is a tempting prospect for these specialist beer makers. The sales volume of some craft brands in China is currently growing at well over 100 percent a year, according to Ben Cavendar at China Market Research Group in Shanghai.

"So the growth is pretty significant," he said, adding that major brands are starting to buy up craft breweries to help their expansion in China, the world's biggest beer market by value.

Typically, craft beer is made by small and independent breweries that use traditional or innovative ingredients and is sold at a premium to the broader market. The sector has taken off globally in recent years.

Hong Kong's overall beer market, expected to ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Viiking Beverages in talks with investors to expand product portfolio and open new breweries
Viiking Beverages, owner of Goa Kings beer, is in talks with investors to raise up to 200 crore by the end of this quarter to help expand its product portfolio and open two new production units, the Economic Times reported on July 5 citing a company top executive.

The company has also planned its initial public offering (IPO) by the end of 2019 or early 2020 to fund its ambitious expansion plan, Manoj Asrani, the newly appointed chief executive officer of Viiking Beverages, told ET. It has already roped in Grant Thornton to prepare for the IPO.

"We are in the final leg of discussion with an investor to raise between 150-200 crore," said Asrani, who is also chief marketing officer of Viiking Ventures, the holding company of Viiking Beverages, owned by film actor and producer Sachiin Joshi.

Asrani said there is great demand for Goa Kings Beer, which cannot be fulfilled by the firm's two existing breweries in Goa and Jammu.

"From 30,000-40,000 cases last year, we are already doing 3 lakh cases a month now, but the demand is for over 5 lakh cases," he said.

“Once we get the funds, we will open two production units, which ...More info on site
