Brewery news Canada, AB: Brewers renewing call for open beer borders across Canada
Some local craft brewery owners are renewing their call for open beer borders across Canada after the Alberta government was ordered to scrap a grant program that was aimed at levelling the playing field, CBC.ca reported on June 13.

"Level the playing field, may the best beer win," said Charlie Bredo, co-founder of Troubled Monk Brewery in Red Deer.

On June 11, a panel found the province non-compliant under the Agreement of Internal Trade and gave the government six months to repeal or amend the Alberta Small Brewers Development Program (ASBD) which provided a rebate to small brewers.

On June 12, Bredo said the loss of the grant highlights why there needs to be a "truly open market" across the country.

"Everyone should be on a level playing field here," he said, "and if Ontario beer can come into Alberta, we've got to make it equal."

The June 11 ruling was the result of a complaint lodged two years ago by Calgary beer importer Artisan Ales Consulting Ltd., which said the grant program put their company at a disadvantage and reduced sales.

Jason Kenney, leader of Alberta's official Opposition United Conservative Party, said he would favour ending the Alberta subsidies, calling for "free beer trade all ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors might consider raising prices to compensate for higher aluminium tariffs
Getting buzzed on a 12-pack of Coors may be about to get more expensive for the US consumers, TheStreet.com reported on June 14.

MillerCoors, the maker of Miller Lite and Coors Lite, might have to consider raising prices to compensate for losing $40 million in profits due to aluminum tariffs, CEO Gavin Hattersley told Bloomberg. Though Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross insisted that tariff would have minimal effects on American brewers when it was first proposed in March, Hattersley said that raising prices by 50 cents per 12-pack would cause the beverage market to be "hammered."

"I can't just go to the shareholders and say, 'You're just going to have to accept my profit's going to be $40 million less,'" Hattersley told Bloomberg from MillerCoors' new plant in Milwaukee. "It doesn't work that way."

The tariff is equal to a $347.7 million tax on the industry and could lead to the loss of 20,291 jobs, President and CEO of the Beer Institute President Jim McGreevy said in a statement.

"It's going to be something that's going to put jobs at risk and would be against the U.S. consumer," Carlos Brito, CEO of Anheuser Busch Inbev NV, which makes Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, said of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Twin Sisters Brewing a few weeks from opening in Bellingham
Loren J. DeMuth and Theresa Green wanted to do something a little different in the Bellingham brewery scene and, after nearly three years of planning, they are nearly ready to show the results, The Bellingham Herald reported on June 13.

Their Twin Sisters Brewing will produce a variety of different beers and feature a restaurant and bar, called Bellingham Beer Garden, that will fill a remodeled warehouse. The property will also have a large beer garden and park area, providing an area where people can relax and enjoy the weather or play games like cornhole. There is also a play area for children.

The brewery is a few weeks from opening at 500 Carolina St. in the Sunnyland neighborhood. It's hosting a job fair June 13-15 to fill more than 100 full-time positions and around 30 part-time positions. The full-time positions will offer benefits such as paid time off, said Wade Clark, general manager of Twin Sisters.

The job fair will be held 1-5 p.m. at the facility. Positions include kitchen staff, back-of-the-house jobs as well as bartenders and servers.

It's unusual for a new, locally-owned brewery to hire this many people at the start, but this facility will have a lot of different ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Pantown Brewing Company one step closer to opening later this summer
A new St. Cloud brewery is one step closer to opening its doors later this summer, The St. Cloud Times reported on June 13.

Pantown Brewing Company's on-sale taproom and off-sale brewer license applications were approved by the St. Cloud City Council this month. The brewery and taproom is located at 408-37th Ave. N, the former home of coffee roaster Muggsy's Beans.

Marty Czech, who co-owns the brewery with Noel Johnson, said he is aiming to open in August pending approval from the Department of Agriculture.

According to plans submitted to the city, the taproom will hold up to 80 people with nearly 4,000 square feet of space for brewing operations and the taproom.

"It basically was a wide-open warehouse space with a couple of little offices," Czech said. "Taking that and converting it into a commercial brewery and taproom has been a significant undertaking."

Czech said they have been renovating the space for roughly six months. They will be using a 10-barrel brewing system and expect to produce around 350 barrels their first year.

Pantown Brewing will have an initial offering of four beers when they open later this summer. A cream ale, amber lager, milk stout and IPA are tentatively planned for the brewery's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Big Top Brewery aiming for early August launch in Pensacola
Adding to the growing list of restaurants and bars opening in downtown Pensacola this summer is Sarasota-based Big Top Brewery, which will bring a brewery and restaurant downtown in early August, the Pensacola News Journal reported on June 14.

Founded in 2013, Big Top is taking over the old Taco Mez location on 21 West Romana Street, marking the company's second brewery/restaurant location. CEO Mike Bisaha said he chose to rent here mainly because the downtown Pensacola culture reminds him of Sarasota's.

"We've been distributing our beer in Pensacola for about two years now, and we've always loved the town," Bisaha said. "We love the buildings that are over 100 years old; it reminds us of our downtown and a lot of our history. Craft beer's really starting to explode in the Pensacola area, and we feel like we have something to contribute."

Big Top is known for its outside-of-the-box beer flavors like Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Honey Jalapeño. Big Top also pays tribute to Sarasota's historical associations with The Ringling Circus with the Trapeze Monk Belgian Wit and the Circus City IPA. The company's logo is circus inspired as well.

"I'm confident that the styles that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Ryan Brewing Company to hold grand opening on June 29USA, MI: Sisters launch Three Blondes Brewing in South Haven
Three sisters have opened a brewery next to their family business in South Haven, grbj.com reported on June 14.

Three Blondes Brewing opened on June 14 after breaking ground on a new building in October.

“We are so very appreciative of the support we are receiving from our community and followers,” the brewery says on its Facebook page. “We can’t wait to share Three Blondes Brewing with you!”

The new $2-million, 7,000-square-foot building includes the brewery, a bar and restaurant and is connected to VanDerZee Motorplex in South Haven, at 1875 Phoenix St.

Benton Harbor-based Pearson Construction was the general contractor for the project, with Honor Credit Union providing financial support.

Three Blondes will offer 10 to 12 beers brewed on-site, according to the brewery’s website.

The menu will feature “locally sourced” options, with a focus on traditional pub fare: pizza, burgers, sandwiches and a variety of shareable plates.

The “three blondes” of the brewery are the daughters of Motorplex owners Ray VanDerZee and Linda VanDerZee.

The sisters and their husbands, who co-own and operate the brewery, are Carrie Troyer and Adam Troyer, Megan Zernicke and Matt Zernicke and Amanda Johnson and Joe Johnson.

Carrie Troyer told the Business Journal in November the decision to build a brewery next ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Ryan Brewing Company to hold grand opening on June 29
"Beer is our way to bring everybody together."

That's what Ryan Brewing Company President Todd Ryan said about beer making, the Beloit Daily News reported on June 13.

Ryan Brewing Company, 5312 Williams Drive, Roscoe will be opening soon offering customers a new way to enjoy brews. With some communal picnic tables and five original brews on tap, visitors can expect to get social while titillating their taste buds. The grand opening is scheduled for June 29.

"All five are brand new recipes," Ryan said.

The vision for Ryan Brewing Company is a social one. As opposed to watching TVs and sipping in isolation, patrons can chat, tell tall tales or pull out board games to play with each other.

If interested, customers can be regaled with stories by Ryan. A bit of a bard, Ryan has as many tales about beers as bubbly creations. He can whip out a history lesson on the German Purity Law of 1516, monks brewing in 500 AD or go over the "periodic table of beer styles." He can also haul out the story of his Joris Beer, named after Belgian friend Yoris, and display the bottle with a picture of Joris's likeness in monk's clothes.

Brewery news USA, NC: Mad Mole Brewing opens its doors in Wilmintgon
With just a year from inception to completion, Mad Mole Brewing has opened the doors to its taproom at 309 Boathouse Road, Wilmington, the Greater Wilmington Business reported on June 13.

The brewery is owned and operated by Martin de Jongh, Ole Pederson, Chris Worden, Thomas Varnum and Neil Blake. A team effort, many of the recipes were developed by de Jongh and Pederson, who have been avid home brewers for the better part of the last decade. Blake, who studied chemistry and fermentation at Appalachian State University and interned at a number of Asheville breweries, will serve as head brewer.

The name Mad Mole comes from combining the “m” from Martin’s first name with Ole’s name. Adding "mad" to "mole" is a nod to their “mad scientist” approach to brewing and every beer name is a play on the word mole. Even the custom designed bar top depicts moles at work and play.

The brewery’s seven-barrel electric system, which is powered in part by solar panels, also features temperature controlled stainless steel beer storage tanks, which are linked directly to the taps rather than the beer being stored in kegs. The entire brewing system is visible from the spacious taproom, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Orlison Brewing will no longer produce its own beers
Orlison Brewing of Airway Heights, Washington will no longer produce its own beers, but is not ceasing operations. The brewery will no longer produce Orlison Brewing’s beers like Clem’s Gold, Boulder Garden Brown (GABF medal winner), and Shin Splints IPA, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 13.

In addition to brewing its own beers, Orlison Brewing has produced beer under contract with No-Li Brewhouse for about three years. The brewery will continue to brew Born & Raised IPA on a contract basis for No-Li Brewhouse, which reached capacity at its own facility a few years ago. The Orlison Brewing brand, recipes and business are not for sale and the future has yet to be determined.

Orlison Brewing operates its brewery in Airway Heights, which is just a few miles west of Spokane. It also operates a taproom in downtown Spokane, which the company will close at the end of business on Thursday, June 14.

“The team at Orlison thank all of you, our customers, for supporting us as we grew our brand,” said a message on the company’s Facebook page. “We have loved being a part of the downtown beer community and meeting so many wonderful people along the way. Growing our ...More info on site

Brewery news World: New report shows demand for craft beer not likely to slow down any time soon
Consumer demand for artisan beer is not likely to slow down any time soon, according to a new report from a global science company, The Morning Advertiser reported on June 14.

Royal DSM published The Craft Revolution in Brewing report, which surveyed 3,300 consumers in seven countries in Europe and the US, also stated that three quarters (75%) cited taste above everything else, including price, when they make their purchase decision.

About two thirds of consumers said they were attracted to craft beer because it is a premium, high-quality product.

The same number said they felt drinking craft beer was ‘more special’ than drinking regular beer. Quality, therefore, is becoming the byword of the brewing industry today, according to DSM.

The report stated that in the past two years, just under half of the craft drinkers surveyed said they now drink more craft beer.

Just 6% of this group are drinking less craft beer. The greatest increase took place in those aged 18 to 30. This rise is eating into regular beer consumption with 56% of respondents saying they drink less regular beer now.

Craft drinkers value ‘locally brewed’ beer but this is less about where it originates from and more about how the product is ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Beer cartel trial opens in Germany
A judicial trial concerning a group of breweries which were accused of forming an illegal beer cartel in Germany opened at the Duesseldorf Higher Regional Court on June 13, Xinhua reported on June 14.

The court will consider an appeal by the German subsidiary of the Danish Carlsberg brewery against hefty fines first imposed on the company by the Federal Cartel Office back in 2014. At the time, the German antitrust authorities collected damages worth 338 million euros (398 million U.S. dollars) from 11 companies, one industry association and 14 managers for allegedly having colluded to raise beer prices paid by consumers.

The largest share of those fines, 222 million euros, was shouldered by the Radeberger Group, owned by the German foodstuffs producer Dr. Oetker, and Carlsberg Germany. The German subsidiary of the Belgian Anheuer-Busch InBev brewery evaded fines entirely by acting as the principal witness in the antitrust investigations, while other companies such as Bitburger, Veltins, Warsteiner and Krombacher also cooperated with the Federal Cartel Office and were handed relatively modest fines.

However, the Radeberger Group and Carlsberg Germany launched a challenge to the Federal Cartel Office's decisions in their respective cases before the Duesseldorf Higher Regional Court. Radeberger Group subsequently pulled ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Eight out of ten Italians drink beer
Eight out of 10 Italians drink beer and 70% favour special brews, a DOXA survey for the Birra Moretti Observatory said on June 14.

The number of beer drinkers has risen 34% over the last 10 years, the survey said, with only six out of 10 drinking beer in 2008.

Per capita consumption is substantially steady at 31 litres today compared to 30 litres 10 years ago, much lower than the European average.

Brewery news Japan & Myanmar: Kirin’s Myanmar subsidiary admits donating to Myanmar army during Rohingya crisis
The Japanese government has been urged to investigate “immoral” payments made by a subsidiary of one of the country’s most popular breweries that appears to have gone to Myanmar’s military, The Guardian reported on June 15.

Kirin Holdings Company has admitted its offshoot, Myanmar Brewery, made a payment late last year, during the height of the against the Rohingya population in Rakhine state.

The subsidiary made three donations to Myanmar authorities, worth a total of $30,000 (£22,584), between 1 September and 3 October 2017. Kirin Holdings Company confirmed the payments in correspondence with Amnesty International, who published the letters on June 14.

One donation, worth $6,000, intended to help victims of violence in Rakhine, was accepted by the commander in chief of the Myanmar military, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Kirin confirmed.

The brewery said the commander had accepted the donations in his capacity as a government representative, but admitted it did not know how the funds were used.

Kirin has banned all new charitable donations in Myanmar and is conducting a human rights assessment of Myanmar Brewery’s suppliers and business partners.

Amnesty International branded the payments unethical and said Kirin’s clientele would be dismayed by the possibility that they were inadvertently supporting the actions of ...More info on site

Brewery news Tanzania: Confederation of Tanzania Industries calls for improvement of business environment for producers of beer and spirits
The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) has called on the government to improve the business environment for manufactures of beers and spirits, The Citizen reported on June 14.

In the event, the Confederation proposes maintaining the current excise duty rates on beer and spirits, but reduce excise duty on ready-to-drink (RTD) products to Sh765 a litre.

Currently, RTDs are charged as spirits – at Sh3,481 per litre – when they have the same alcohol content as beer: six per cent.

CTI also calls for the removal of the excise duty on beer produced from 100 per cent local raw materials.

“Maintaining the current excise duty structure on beer and spirits would be healthy for the industry and government revenue, as well as for Tanzanian consumers, employees and farmers,” a statement availed to BusinessWeek reads in part.

On the issue of maintaining jobs, Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has a workforce of 800 employees, according to CTI.

The beer industry aids growth of the agricultural sector via contract farming involving with local farmers. As it is, SBL have a network of 300 farmers, which it looks forward to expanding with time.

Further increases of excise duty on beer and spirits would negatively affect prices, leading to declines in sales ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: SABMiller confirms commitment to business transformation still part of long-term business plans
SABMiller has briefed Parliament’s portfolio committee on economic development on its progress in meeting the conditions for its merger with global brewery giant AB InBev, saying its commitment to business transformation and development has not fizzled out since the tie-up, fin24 reported on June 14.

In 2016, SABMiller and AB InBev wrapped up a deal which would create the largest beer producer in the world. AB InBev then became SAB’s holding company, and SAB would continue operating under its name in South Africa.

The Competition Commission assessed the transaction and approved it, under specific conditions. These included the protection of any South African workers from retrenchment, diversifying certain aspects of SAB’s business so small enterprises and localising the company’s product inputs.

SAB’s vice president of legal and corporate affairs in Africa, Doreen Kosi, told the portfolio committee that the company’s R1 bln public interest commitments were not just a matter of complying with the Competition Commission’s conditions, but aimed at long-term business growth.

Head of SAB’s regional strategic programmes unit, Zoleka Lisa, said the company would invest R50 mln over five years to help build and support black, women and youth-owned enterprises through mentorship, marketing and market linkages.
