Germany: Sunny weather and looming FIFA World Cup boost beer sales in May
|
Sunny weather and the looming FIFA World Cup in Russia have provided a welcome boost to beer sales in Germany in May, German media reported on June 4.
Franz-Josef Weihrauch, spokesperson for the Krombacher brewery, told the German press agency that the brewery experienced the "best month in our history" in May. According to the spokesperson, Krombacher sold a record volume of 650,000 hectolitres of beer during the past month.
Similarly, rival brewery Veltins witnessed a surge in sales to 315,000 hectolitres in May, marking an increase of 10 percent compared to the same period last year.
Holger Eichele, president of the German Brewer's Association, attributed the rise in demand to a combination of recent good weather and a rush by gastronomical enterprises to stock the alcoholic beverage ahead of the World Cup.
Eichele said some breweries were currently running special additional shifts "in order to deliver enough drinks." Eichele further highlighted that the trend was likely to last throughout June.
He predicted that "especially while the World Cup is ongoing", numerous of public viewings, street parties and grill parties were likely to occur which would be "hard to imagine without a cold beer" as long as the weather played along.

Japan: Brewers upping alcohol content to combat declining consumption
|
Japanese brewers are discovering a new way to tap the lucrative market of working adults: Get them tipsy more quickly and efficiently, Bloomberg reported on June, 3.
This domestic segment is becoming more important to beer makers Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Co. as Japan’s famously aging population -- the oldest in the world -- drinks less. They have released canned drinks with up to 9 percent alcohol by volume, which is the highest it can be without being pushed into another tax bracket.
The brewers are promoting the ready-to-drink (RTD) segment in Japan, looking for ways to expand sales as demographic changes and a trend of consumers diversifying their drinking habits has led domestic beer consumption to fall two years in a row.
“It’s because consumers are getting more value for their money. They can get drunk without spending too much, I think that is the products’ biggest appeal,” said Euromonitor analyst Akari Utsunomiya. “There’s a deep-rooted tendency to save money among Japanese consumers."

Vietnam: Leading brewers spending big on advertisements in Vietnam

Global consumption has not increased in a decade, but Vietnamese are having a beer blast.
As more and more Vietnamese drinkers take to beer and competition heats up, leading brands are spending big on advertisements, VnExpress International reported on June 2.
Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverages Corporation (Sabeco), the leading beer producer in Vietnam which brews the well-known Saigon and 333 beers, spent VND1.2 trillion ($52.9 million) on advertising last year.
While this figure is slightly less than its 2016 outlay, it still places Sabeco on the top of advertisement budgets list in the beer industry, spending more than VND1 trillion on product promotion in each of the last three years.
Meanwhile the producer of Hanoi and Truc Bach beers, Hanoi Beer Alcohol and Beverage Jsc, known as Habeco, spent VND568 billion ($24.6 million) on ads last year, over 3 times its 2014 expenditure.
The increased spending is a response to Habeco’s declining share of the beer market in recent years, from its heydays of having the most popular brands in Northern Vietnam. USA: Beer dollar sales up 4.1% through four weeks ending May 20
|
U.S. beer dollar sales increased 4.1 percent as volume sales grew 2.1 percent through the four weeks ending May 20, according to retail data provider IRI Worldwide.
IRI, a Chicago-based market research firm that tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers, reported that increased dollar sales in several segments — including cider (18.7 percent), imports (9.5 percent), domestic super premiums (15.8 percent), flavored malt beverages (8.5 percent) and non-alcoholic offerings (2.2 percent) — in the last four weeks beat year-to-date trends. The trends for the beer category’s largest segment, domestic premiums, also improved, down 0.5 percent compared to down 3.3 percent for the year.
Total U.S. dollar sales are up 1.7 percent to about $12.3 billion through the first 20 weeks of the year in its multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Despite the increase in dollar sales, volume sales have decreased on the year.
So far this year, five segments — imports (5.3 percent), craft (2.9 percent), domestic super premium (9.9 percent), flavored malt beverages (6 percent) and cider (8.6 percent) — have posted positive volume sales trends.

Georgia: JSC Georgian Beer to produce Holsten beer in Georgia
|
JSC Georgian Beer has secured the right to produce and sell Holsten beer in Georgia from Baltika Breweries, which is owned by the Danish brewing firm Carlsberg, the Drinks Business Review reported on June 5.
Considered to be one of the oldest German beer brands, Holsten has been produced in Germany since 1879.
Baltika Breweries has been producing the beer in Russia since 2012 under the license of Carlsberg Group.
With the new sublicense agreement, JSC Georgian Beer aims to ensure the presence of the brand in 98% of outlets across Georgia.
Baltika stated that the license grant confirms the popularity of German beers in Georgia.

USA: Heineken USA names female CEO
|
The U.S. beer industry's glass ceiling has finally been shattered. Heineken USA on June 6 named Maggie Timoney as its CEO, replacing Ronald den Elzen, who is assuming a global role at the Amsterdam-based brewer. Timoney is the first woman to lead a major U.S. beer supplier, according to Heineken, AdAge.com reported.
Timoney joins the U.S. division from Ireland, where she ran Heineken as CEO for the last five years. The move is a return to the States for Timoney, who joined the beer marketer in 1998 in a national sales planning role and was named Heineken USA's senior VP of human resources in 2010.
"Maggie is a competitive and energetic leader who is known for inspiring teams, operationalizing plans and mobilizing organizations to deliver business results,", Heineken Americas Region President Marc Busain said in an announcement, adding that she "over-delivered on volume, revenue, profit and market share targets" in Ireland.
Heineken USA, whose brands include its namesake lager as well as Dos Equis, Tecate and Strongbow, ranks as the nation's fourth-largest U.S. beer supplier with nearly 4 percent market share, according to Beer Marketer's Insights, which called Timoney the first woman to lead a top five U.S. beer supplier.
