DRY HOP BITTERNESS COMPOSITION

ABSTRACT
Why is the bitterness of dry hopped beers so different? This question has been heavily investigated in recent years. We learned that the humulinones are largely responsible for a part of the bitterness in beer and we also learned that the content of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases with dry hopping - exactly why is not known. Also unclear so far is the role of polyphenols. A new study from Oregon State University shows conclusively that both the polyphenols and humulinones contribute to the sensory and the IBU bitterness of dry hopped beer. How can we translate this knowledge in an easy bitterness determination analysis?

Brewery news Malaysia: Brewers expected to benefit from 2018 World Soccer Cup
The year 2018 is largely seen as one that will remain challenging to Malaysia’s breweries, but higher disposable income and the upcoming World Cup 2018 in Russia will most likely support the sector’s earnings in the new year, according to TA Securities Holdings Bhd senior investment analyst Tan Kam Meng, The Edge Financial Daily reported on December 28.

“Note that due to the time difference between Malaysia and Russia, we can expect one match to kick off at 8pm Malaysian time, every day, during the event,” said Tan in an email to The Edge Financial Daily, who foresees that the largest global football event held every four years will spur beer consumption worldwide.

Though Tan does not expect any increase in sin taxes — the common term for taxes levied on alcohol and cigarette players — he said 2018 will still remain challenging, due mainly to the rise of contrabands.

Beer excise duty rose to RM175 per 100% volume per litre on March 1, 2016, from RM7.40 per litre previously, while the 15% ad valorem (according to value) tax was removed.

Brewery news Vietnam: Prime Minister urges to keep Saigon Beer brand name unchanged
The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to keep Saigon Beer brand name unchanged, VietNamNet Bridge reported on December 26, citing a representative of the Business Finance Department under the Ministry of Finance.

Saigon Beer is the brand name of Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverages Corporation (Sabeco) whose over 53 percent stake has recently been sold to Vietnam Beverage which belongs to ThaiBev Company.

At a press conference on state-owned enterprises (SOEs) equitization, divestment and restructuring in 2017, Mr. Dang Quyet Tien, head of the Business Finance Department, said that in many countries brand names were uneasy to lose.

The government does not need to hold capital for keeping brand names, but the importance was that those brand names must survive, he added.

Some opinions said that foreign investors might have deliberately dodged the Vietnam’s Investment Law to indirectly own over 50 percent of capital in the Sabeco auction.

In reply, Mr. Tien said that it should not distinguish domestic and overseas factors because some foreign companies had not directly invested in Vietnam but had enterprises established in the country, so they should be treated as Vietnamese firms.

Still he said it was necessary to amend some current laws to avoid the ...More info on site

Brewery news Azerbaijan: Government approves increase of import excise rates on alcohol and cigarettes
The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan has approved new excise tax rates on imported goods, which will come into force on January 22, 2018, AzerNews reported on December 25.

In particular, the excise on malt beer imported to Azerbaijan will be 1.7 manats [$1] per litre, wines from fresh grapes, including fortified wines; grape must - 3.5 manats [$2.06] per litre, sparkling wines - 5 manats [$2.94] per litre, and whiskeys - 10 manats [$5.88] per litre.

For import of whiskey, vodka and liqueur, the excise tax is set at the level of 10 manats [$5.88] per 1 litre.

By the decision of the Cabinet, excises for the import of cigars were set at 20 manats [$11.77] per 1,000 pieces, cigarettes - 12 manats [$7.06] for 1,000 pieces.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Finance Minister Samir Sharifov stated that the country’s government plans to double excise rates for the import of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in 2018.

Such a decision was made due to the fact that a sharp reduction in the exchange rate of Azerbaijani manat against the U.S. dollar led to an increase in prices for imported alcohol and tobacco products, as well as to a reduction in excise tax rates in manat.

Brewery news Thailand: Home-brew outlaws serving up delicious revolution in Thailand
At a riverside bar just outside Bangkok, a delicious revolution is underway, NZCity reported on December 28.

Every Saturday, Chit Beer microbrewery opens for beer lovers and those who want to learn the craft of craft beer.

"It's getting very, very popular now because when people know more about the concept, that yeah, we can make beer ourselves at home, [they're] excited," said Wichit Saiklao, better known as Chit.

But these weekly classes are an act of rebellion.

Home-brewing is illegal in Thailand.

To get a beer-making licence, Thais must be able to produce 100,000 litres a year and have $400,000 in the bank, which effectively shuts out small players.

The 1950 Liquors Act also protects the two giant conglomerates that dominate the cheap lager market — ThaiBev with its Chang (and the infamous "changover"), and Boon Rawd Brewery's Singha and Leo beer.

Thai craft brewers are forced to take their recipes to breweries overseas and then import their bottles back into Thailand, paying hefty tax.

Most brew in Asia, but not all.

Phuket's Full Moon Breweries makes its fruity Chalawan Pale Ale in New South Wales and the logo for its Chatri IPA is a Muay Thai fighter with a koala head.
