Scientific Digest

Alcohol-free beer and functional drinks are two strongly growing markets within the beverage sector. The success of alcohol-free beer and functional drinks with relaxing, stress reducing properties might be largely based on their health-benefits. Additionally, exotic flavors along with a high product quality are also key value propositions of these products. In this study, the main potential health benefits of alcohol-free dry-hopped beer and dry-hopped relaxation drinks are reviewed and the main target consumer groups are described.

Brewery news Sri Lanka: President ‘can’t accept reduction in beer prices’
Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena expressed on December 4 displeasure over the reduction in beer prices following his government's new tax formula for alcoholic drinks that made the brew cheaper, economynext reported.

Sirisena said any reduction in alcoholic drinks was not acceptable to the government's temperance drive and said the country had received accolade from the World Health Organisation for its anti-alcohol and tobacco policies.

"I cannot accept the reduction in beer prices... Getting more revenue from alcohol and tobacco should not be part of government policy," he said in parliament while speaking on the health ministry votes.

However, he ended his 15-minute speech by saying that he approved Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera's 2018 budget proposals. A key plank of the budget was the reform of the way alcohol was taxed.

Samaraweera had taken what he called a pragmatic view and imposed tax based on the alcohol content of drinks which made beer and wine cheaper. It is also hoped that lower prices will discourage the consumption of hard liquor.

Following the new tax formula, beer prices fell by about 50 percent while wine too became considerably cheaper.

Any increase in alcohol prices usually lead to an expansion of the illicit liquor industry which does not ...More info on site

Brewery news Malawi: Carlsberg Malawi changes its name to Castel Malawi Limited
Carlsberg Malawi Limited has finally changed its name to Castel Malawi Limited, two years after the French company takeover, the Nyasa Times reported on December 5.

Castel Limited, a French company, took majority shares in the Dutch franchise two years ago, however, the re-branding process has taken long.

The takeover means Carlsberg Malawi Brewery Limited will now be called Castel Malawi Brewery Limited.

The change is effective 24th October, 2017 and is in accordance with Section 52 of the Companies Act of 2013, according to Company Secretary Chipiliro Kauka

“The subsidiaries of Castel Malawi Limited therefore remain Castel Malawi Brewery Limited, Southern Bottlers Limited, and Malawi Distilleries Limited,” Kauka said.

He has since assured that all operation of the group remains constant.

Castel Malawi’s soft drinks business was established in 1955, when the first Coca-Cola products were produced in Malawi under the company name Nyasaland Bottling Company. After Malawi’s independence in 1964, the company name changed to National Bottling Company and continued to produce and distribute sparkling beverages.

The name National Bottling Company was later changed to Southern Bottlers Limited. Southern Bottlers Limited is the only Coca-Cola franchisee in Malawi.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be seen when the branding of their products on the market will start ...More info on site
