Brewery news USA, TX: Latest draft of beer legislation leaves bitter taste in the mouths of some craft brewers
The latest draft of beer legislation in Texas has left a bitter taste in the mouths of some craft brewers, Big Country Homepage reported on September 13.

House Bill 3287, which lawmakers passed during their regular legislative session earlier this year, requires craft brewers that produce more than 225,000 barrels per year to pay a distributor to deliver their beer — even if the destination is inside their own facility.

Proponents of the legislation say it will maintain the state’s three-tier system — Prohibition-era regulations that legally separate brewers, distributors and retailers — and properly regulate large companies that purchase craft breweries. To opponents, though, the law targets newer craft breweries across the state, discouraging investment in their businesses while protecting larger and more established beer companies.

Oskar Blues Brewery, a Colorado-based company that operates a tap room in Austin, is one of few — perhaps the only — craft breweries in Texas large enough to fall under the new law’s provisions. And while Chad Melis, the marketing director for Oskar Blues, says “we’ll continue doing what we’re doing” despite the new law, others fear it could have broader effects.

“Even though the bill would only initially impact a few breweries, we felt it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Mason’s first craft brewery 16 Lots Brewing Company to open its doors on September 15
Mason’s first craft brewery is set to debut this week with a weekend-long celebration, Hamilton Journal News reported on September 13.

16 Lots Brewing Company will open Friday, Sept. 15, at 753 Reading Road and offer a 10-barrel brewing system that will be producing its flagship and seasonal offerings all year round.

The grand opening will feature all six flagship beers on tap, including The Major German Pilsner, Treaty American Wheat Ale, Muddy Creek Oatmeal Stout, War Horse India Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale and 1803 American Pale Ale.

16 Lots Brewing Company was founded by Mike Burton, a 21-year marketing executive, and Jeff Cosgrove, a 20-year home brewer whose primary career was in the paper industry.

“We could not be more proud to show our community what we have created this coming Friday,” Burton said. “Jeff’s beers turned out great, as did the space.”

16 Lots’ in-house restaurant will be Mad Monks Pizza Co., which will offer New York style pizza.

There’s ample space inside for a large crowd via 140 seats and an additional 72 seats outside.

16 Lots Brewing Company plans to open to the public following a 1 p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony Friday. It also will be open from noon to midnight Saturday ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Drekker Brewing announces plans for new destination brewery in Fargo
Drekker Brewing, the Fargo-based craft brewery, announced on September 13 that it is building a new destination brewery and taproom, The Growler reported.

The historic building, located at 1632 First Avenue North in Fargo, was once a locomotive repair facility before becoming a storage space from the ‘70s onward. Now, Drekker is renovating the historic building, located just a few blocks west of downtown, into its second home.

“We’ve had our eyes on this building since the very early stages of planning our company,” said Drekker president, Mark Bjornstad, in a press release. “We’re so excited to breathe life back into this historic building and to be a part of the movement that’s expanding the energy of Downtown Fargo westward. This is only possible because of the amazing support we’ve received from this community.”

Drekker has been brewing in their downtown brewery since the fall of 2014, adding equipment bit by bit, doubling production twice in the three years since opening. Plans for the destination brewery, nearly triple the current square footage of their downtown brewery, include a taproom, several event spaces, a large patio and area for food trucks to park, and most important, the ability to produce more beer—5,000 barrels of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Becker Brewing Co.’s ribbon cutting ceremony to take place on September 17th
A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 17th for Becker Brewing Co., which is located at Becker Farms & Vizcarra Vineyards, 3724 Quaker Road, Gasport, Lockport Union-Sun & Journal reported.

The brewpub has been serving local micro brews since 2009, but now it will be making its own speciality beers on site.

The day will have an Oktoberfest theme with German music by the Frankfurters from 1 until 4 p.m.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Big Axe Brewery breaks ground on new brewery
Maritime Beer Report has given word that Big Axe Brewery has broken ground on a new brewery and taphouse.

Launched in April 2014 by Peter and Tatiana Cole as part of their Big Axe Bed & Breakfast, the brewery will become known as the Big Axe Brewery & Saloon when it moves into the new “wild west-style log home” building designed by Riverbend Log Homes.

In addition to a new 10-barrel brewhouse from DME Brewing Solutions in PEI, the new facility on the bank of the Saint John River will include a two-level taproom with a deck overlooking the river, 12 beers on draught, and food service.

The new Big Axe Brewery & Saloon is expected to open in April 2018.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Curley Brewing Company launches crowdfunding campaign
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a planned brewery and cafe in London, Ontario has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for renovations, equipment costs, and licensing fees.

Curley Brewing Company is being founded by Nigel Curley and Kelsey Watkinson, who intend to open a “craft beer cafe” focused on vegan beer and food. The vision for the establishment, which is under construction at 1700 Hyde Park Road, is further described on the Indiegogo campaign page as follows:

When you walk into our welcoming and inviting space, you will notice that all of our decor has been up-cycled to reduce our environmental impact. Kick back and enjoy fresh artisan baked goods crafted with house brewed beer and left over grains. Sip on locally roasted coffee, hand crafted teas, house made kombucha, and of course, choose from a variety of craft beers brewed in house. Everything is fresh, vegan, and available for dine in and take out served in compostable packaging.

Curley Brewing is aiming to raise C$15,000 by September 20th, although since it is a flexible goal, even a final amount less than that will go towards the project.

Brewery news Vietnam: Beer industry prospering in part thanks to FTAs
FTAs not only have helped reduce input costs of beer production, but have also turned Vietnam into a jumping board for foreign breweries to conquer the Southeast Asian and Asia Pacific markets, according to FPT Securities.

In Vietnam, the production of the input materials is still underdeveloped, so breweries have to import malt, hop and beer yeast.

According to FPTS, as brewers in Vietnam import nearly 100 percent of input materials, the proportion of the materials in COGS in Vietnam is higher than the average level in the world (70-90 percent). Malt, for example, accounts for 33 percent, while hop accounts for 2 percent of COGS and rice for 6 percent of COGS.

Therefore, membership in FTAs, under which import products, including malt, hop and beer yeast will become cheaper thanks to tariff cuts, will help the beer industry reduce production costs.

Eight FTAs will have a big impact on Vietnam’s beer industry, namely ATIGA (ASEAN countries), ACFTA (ASEAN-China), AKFTA (ASEAN-South Korea), VJEPA (Vietnam-Japan), AANZFTA (ASEAN – Australia – New Zealand), AIFTA (ASEAN-India), VCFTA (Vietnam-Chile) and VN-EAEUFTA.

Under Circular No 164/2013/TT-BTC, the preferential tariffs for malt, hop and beer yeast are 5 percent, 5 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

With these FTAs, the import tariffs have ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Beer giants marked as ‘threat to beer choice’ by CAMRA
Brewing behemoths such as AB InBev have been marked as a threat to beer choice by the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide, the Morning Advertiser reported on September 14.

Despite the number of UK breweries rising to more than 1,700, the persistent push by big brands to enter new and emerging segments of the market, such as craft, stifled choice, said the 2018 edition of the guide.

Such a trend was cited by Sierra Nevada ambassador Steve Grossman at the recent Beavertown Extravaganza beer festival in London.

He said: “In the past 20 years this industry has gone nuts. The big breweries have taken notice of this as the sales of their flagship beers started going down.

“They didn't want to get into craft because the beer is expensive to make, but they had to try it, so they started making craft beer styles themselves, but the consumer didn't buy it.”

However, Good Beer Guide editor Roger Protz, who recently announced he is to retire from the position, criticised AB InBev in particular for becoming too dominant in the marketplace.

In a press release marking the launch of the 45 edition of the guide, Protz said: “While many consumers will not ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev introducing alcohol-free version of Budweiser in the UK
AB InBev has announced it is to introduce the alcohol-free version of Budweiser in the UK as part of the group’s expansion of its range of low-alcohol and no-alcohol beers, Bar Magazine reported on September 15.

Budweiser Prohibition is brewed to the same recipe, with the same ageing process with beechwood and quality standards as the core beer, just without the alcohol.

AB InBev said it would be introduced “later this year” in both the on-trade and retail. During the launch period, Budweiser Prohibition will be available in 330ml cans, with additional formats planned for next year.

The name is inspired by the first batches of Budweiser being produced during US Prohibition in the 1920s.

The announcement was made on September 15 as AB InBev celebrates its eighth annual Global Be(er) Responsible Day, which promotes smart drinking among the brewer’s staff and their consumers.

In the UK, AB InBev’s portfolio already includes the market-leading alcohol-free beer Beck’s Blue and the lower-alcohol Bud Light, which arrived in the UK in March this year, brewed to 3.5% ABV.

The expansion of this portfolio is part of AB InBev’s Global Smart Drinking Goals, where the brewer has pledged that 20% of all its beer volumes produced globally by 2025 ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Craft beer drinkers want designated craft beer seal
Producing a folksy brew is not enough for Australian craft beer drinkers: it must also come from an authentic, independent brewery, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on September 13.

That's according to the biggest publicly available survey of tastes in craft beer Down Under, which took into account the opinions of 17,000 consumers.

It found that 64% of craft aficionados wanted to know a brewery's ownership, while 99% said they preferred to buy their beer from and independent, Australian-owned brewery.

In comparison just a quarter were happy to buy craft beer from a large multi-national company and a third from supermarket-owned brands.

The 2017 Australian Craft Beer Survey, by craft retailer Beer Cartel, also showed strong interest for a seal to identify whether a beer is from an independent Australian brewery, with eight out of 10 respondents indicating that such a device would have a medium to large impact on the beer they purchase.

The A740 mln (UD$594 mln) craft beer segment is the only part of the Australian beer market which is in continuous growth, with overall consumption of beer in decline.

Indeed, industry researcher IBISWorld estimates craft production has been growing at an annual rate of nearly 10%.

Consumed by 92% of craft beer drinkers Australia-wide, Pale Ale ...More info on site
