Brewery news USA: D. G. Yuengling & Son, Inc still first on top 10 US biggest craft brewers list
Every year the US-based Brewers Association (BA) releases its list of the 50 biggest US craft brewers, detailing the largest breweries in the US still deemed to be ‘craft’ by the trade body.

The association describes an American craft brewer as “small, independent and traditional”.

Small means that the brewer has an annual production of six million barrels of beer or less, “flavoured malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition”.

Independent means that “less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer”.

Traditional relates to “a brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewers brands) or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavour.”

While big beer has been edging on in the craft beer market for some time, 2016 saw acquisitions of small brewers by big beer companies reach fever pitch.

To name a few examples, AB InBev bought Houston-based Karbach Brewing Company and Virginia-based Devils Backbone, following earlier purchases of Goose Island, Blue Point, Elysian and Golden Road, while ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Alberta government appeals ruling against its craft brewers rebate program
The Alberta government is appealing a trade panel ruling which determined its craft brewers rebate program and graduated beer price markups violated Canada`s Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT), CBC.ca reports.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci wouldn't disclose details of what will form the legal basis of the appeal, but said it will show Alberta's program is legal under what is Canada's free trade agreement between provinces.

"It's in Alberta's best interest to see liquor manufacturing happen here with jobs, investment and a market," said Ceci, who credited government incentives for creating 18 new craft brewers in Alberta.

"This government, in particular, supports the development of small brewers, or liquor manufacturing industry in this province," said Ceci.

The three-person AIT panel ruled July 28, 2017, on a complaint filed against the Alberta government by Calgary-based beer importer Artisan Ales Consulting. Artisan Ales imports craft beer to Alberta from Quebec and outside of Canada.

In October 2015, the Alberta government introduced a lower markup price for beers produced by smaller brewers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

The province rolled back the policy in August 2016, instituting a markup of C$1.25 a litre for all beer. But at the same time, the province introduced a rebate known as the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Heritage Brewing Company relocating and expanding its operations
Heritage Brewing Company will create 66 new jobs and invest $8.9 million to expand its craft brewery in the City of Manassas. Heritage Brewing is relocating and expanding its operations into a 35,000 square foot facility allowing it to triple production of its craft beers. The expansion will also support growing the distribution of Heritage Brewing’s craft beer to the meet the surging demand for its products, Augusta Free Press reported.

“Heritage Brewing’s new job creation and investment in Manassas, along with its commitment to purchase Virginia-grown products, underscores the crucial role that agriculture plays in the economies of both rural and urban areas of the Commonwealth,” said Governor McAuliffe. “With its focus on training and hiring veterans and its pledge to donate a portion of its profits to the families of fallen soldiers, Heritage Brewing stands out in its efforts to serve those who have served our nation. Today’s announcement is a great win for Virginia’s veterans, our craft brewery industry, and our ongoing efforts to build the new Virginia economy.”

Heritage Brewing Company is a veteran-owned and operated craft brewery founded in 2013 and has quickly grown to become one of the commonwealth’s largest craft breweries. Heritage also opened a ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev to double efforts to market its American beers in Belgium
Belgian-Brazilian brewer AB InBev will double down on its efforts to market its American Goose Island beers in Belgium. They were launched about a year ago, but need to gain more visibility in bars now, Retail Detail Europe reported on August 25.

It will not yet launch major ad campaigns on television or on other media, but AB InBev will organize multiple events revolving around its beers. For instance, it will have “hoppy hours”, tasting in bars. Customers can also win prizes when they order these beers. AB InBev has owned Goose Island since 2011 and it also introduced these beers in Belgium last year, mainly in bars with a large beer product range. It also sells these craft beers at Delhaize, Carrefour and Albert Heijn. The craft beer focus is AB InBev’s way to deal with the altered Belgian beer market, because Belgian beer consumption is dwindling, especially for pints. American beers are hardly popular in Belgium right now. Only 5,876 hectolitres were imported last year, which is roughly brewery Westvleteren’s annual production.
