Brewery news World: AB InBev among brewers focusing on alcohol-free beers
Anheuser-Busch InBev is among brewers focusing on alcohol-free beers as more consumers are looking for healthier drinks that won't affect their energy levels.

Heineken said last week that sales of its low and no-alcohol ranges grew by double digits in Europe, the Wall Street Journal reports. Heineken launched a zero-percent version of its signature brand in May.

Meanwhile, Anheuser-Busch InBev previously said it wants a fifth of its beer sales to come from low or no-alcohol brews by 2025, up from the current 7 percent. AB InBev previously committed $1 billion to efforts to reduce alcohol abuse and will spend much more than that on the development of new low alcohol products, of up to 3.5 percent alcohol, or no-alcohol products, containing 0.5 percent or lower.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the focus on alcohol-free beers is partly a public relations move, to show the brewers' commitment to responsible drinking, but also makes business sense. Alcohol-free beer sells at a similar price point to traditional brews and carries a lower tax.

Brewery news Brazil: Craft beer sector boosted by exotic and regional products
Exotic and regional products are boosting the production of Brazil’s artisanal beers, a sector that offers unique sensorial experiences to consumers, but also faces the challenge of high taxation, Latin American Herald Tribune reported on August 5.

Artisanal breweries, which have gained strength in Brazil in the last 10 years, recorded growth of 17% per year, consolidating a new trend of consumption of products differentiated by flavors, quality and sensory qualities.

Regional fruits such as cupuaçu, passion fruit, tangerine and açai are now ingredients of artisanal beers in the north and northeast of Brazil.

Other ingredients include pineapple, pepper and mate, while in the states of Parana, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, the beverages’ flavors are complemented with mango, damiana flower, hibiscus, chestnuts, lemon, cashew, acerola and even coffee.

About 91% of the producers of these beers are in the south and southeast of the country – the most populated and developed regions of Brazil – according to data from the Institute of Beer.

The president of the Brazilian Association of Artisanal Beer (Abracerva), Carlo Giovanni Lapolli, highlighted the cultural aspect and influence of European immigrants in those regions as strengths for small-scale manufacturing.

On the other hand, Lapolli highlighted the growth of artisanal production in ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & UK: Spanish San Miguel beer enjoying particular popularity in the UK
The UK has something of a love affair with Spanish beer. Whether it serve as a reminder of holidays in the Med or simply something different to the standard lager offerings, a premium treat, the likes of San Miguel are booming in this market, Business Review Europe reported on August 5.

Brewed by family-owned Mahou San Miguel, last year alone saw UK sales volumes of its four key brands jump by nine percent, passing the one million hectolitre mark for the first time. While Mahou and Alhambra are perhaps less well known versus its illustrious counterpart, they contribute to an ever-popular export portfolio being sold across the world. Solán de Cabras, the company’s luxury water brand, has also performed strongly. In all, two million hectolitres were exported in 2016, accounting for 15 percent of Mahou San Miguel’s €1.22 billion turnover.

Charged with the enviable task of selling San Miguel abroad is International Managing Director Erik d’Auchamp.

A Danish brewing industry veteran of more than 16 years, d’Auchamp started out at Carlsberg before coming into contact with Mahou San Miguel in the early 2000s when the two began doing business together. Five or so years later, in 2006, and he moved to Spain from ...More info on site
