WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news China: AB InBev maintains optimism about sales of super premium brands in China
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, the world's biggest brewer by sales, is optimistic about maintaining double-digit growth in sales of its super premium brands in China this year, given that strong demand for its products continues to increase, a top executive was quoted as saying by China Daily on January 14.

"We see an obvious trend for consumers who want more from the beer market in China, especially in the south and in the first-tier cities. Consumers are demanding different types of beer and are willing to pay more for a swig of the imported stuff," said John Hsu, vice-president of super premium brands of AB InBev China.

"Although the growth of China's overall beer industry is slowing down, we have seen double-digit annual growth in the import volumes of super premium beer in the past three years," Hsu told China Daily.

Premium and super premium beer is the sector beer makers believe shows the most promise to break through the current bottleneck in beer sales in the Chinese market, to generate rapid growth.

Although total sales volumes of the beer sector in 2015 fell 4.9 percent year-on-year, sales of premium beer and super premium beer increased by 9 percent and 17 percent respectively, according to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Total number of permitted breweries raises to record high of 7,190 in 2016
For the third straight year, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau issued more than 1,000 new brewery permits, bringing the total number of permitted U.S. breweries to a record high of 7,190 in 2016, Brewbound.com reported on January 17.

According to recent TTB data published by National Beer Wholesalers Association chief economist Lester Jones, the number of permitted U.S. breweries has tripled from 2,343 over the last six years.

The government agency issued 1,110 new permits in 2016, down slightly from the 1,142 new permits issued in 2015.

Permitted breweries include brick and mortar facilities and alternating proprietorships while excluding contract brewers. It also includes brewers who may have recently shut down their brewing operations but have not yet been “delisted” by the TTB.

As of December 31, 2016, California had the most permitted breweries in the U.S., at 927, and Washington, D.C., had the fewest with 13.

According to Jones, California’s 927 permitted breweries is “almost as many as the entire U.S. total of 974 permits in 1995.”

Similarly, the TTB counted 264 total permitted breweries in Florida last year, which is 14 more than the 1990 national count of 250, according to Jones.

On a national basis, there are now 2.2 breweries per ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation reports significant decline in revenue for the quarter and nine months to December 2016
Zimbabwe’s Delta Corporation has reported a significant decline in revenue for the quarter and nine months to December 2016, weighed down by depressed aggregate demand and product shortages, The Herald reported on January 17.

Revenue declined 10 percent for the third quarter to December and was lower 9 percent for the nine months period on weak demand and product shortage due to water supply interruptions to two of the group’s sorghum beer plants.

Delta, manufacturer of popular beer brands such as Castle, Black Label, Zambezi, Castle Lite and Pilsner, said lager beer volumes fell by 1 percent for the quarter and 8 percent for the nine months.

“This category was adversely impacted by the increased imports from neighbouring countries, which are covered by preferential trade protocols and are fuelled by currency arbitrage opportunities,” Delta said in a trading update on January 16.

The group continues to be negatively impacted by a difficult economic environment were disposable incomes continue to shrink on account of company closures and weak economic growth. Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa expects the economy to expand by 1.7 percent.

Delta said sorghum beer volumes decreased by 4 percent for the quarter, but increased by 2 percent ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands’ stock still not recovered from Trump election dive
Just one day after Donald Trump was elected president, the U.S. company that distributes Corona took a 7% dive in the stock market - and it hasn't recovered, CNN Money reported on January 17.

Constellation Brands' stock remains down 10% since the election, seriously missing out on Wall Street's big Trump rally.

The post-election slump is largely driven by fears that Trump's aggressive stance towards Mexico will ricochet against Constellation's portfolio of Mexican beer brands Corona, Modelo and Pacifico.

Constellation (STZ) is the largest imported beer company in the U.S., so it makes sense that shareholders are concerned about Trump's threats to tear up NAFTA, slap big tariffs on Mexican imports or install a "border tax."

Trump's immigration rhetoric or policies could also hurt the beer company's customer base.

Constellation could lose 1.5 million to 2 million consumers if undocumented workers voluntarily leave the U.S. due to heightened enforcement fears, Evercore ISI analyst Robert Ottenstein estimates.

These concerns led Ottenstein to warn clients after the election that Constellation shares could be "dead money" in the short-term. Longer term, he believes "investors with stomach and patience to endure the Trump uncertainty should be rewarded."

The most immediate risk is on the trade front.

Last week, Trump reiterated his threat ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: First wave of UK brewers unveil price increases for this year
The first wave of the UK brewers have unveiled their price increases for 2017, highlighting the ongoing pressures on the beer industry, the Morning Advertiser reported on January 13.

Molson Coors said it had raised the wholesale selling price on the majority of its draught products by 2.4% from Monday, 9 January. It said it had been working to manage production costs and had worked hard to keep its rises to a minimum.

The brewer boasts beers including Doom Bar, Carling, Staropramen and Coors

A spokesman for the brewer said: “At the headline level, we will be raising the published wholesale selling prices on the majority of our draught products by approximately 2.4% as of 9 January 2017.

“At Molson Coors, we are constantly working to manage the variety of different costs associated with the production and supply of our beers, and will continue to do so.

“We are dedicated to managing all production costs and offering a high-quality and good-value product to our customers. The price increase has been kept to the minimum level required to enable us to continue to invest in our business and customers, and to deliver great customer service and well-supported beer brands.”

Brewery news Australia: Mid-strength beer expected to grow to about one third of total beer market
The managing director of Heineken's beer business in Australia says mid-strength beer will likely grow to about one third of the total A$14 billion-plus beer market over the next decade, driven by an increasing focus on health and fitness, The Australian Financial Review reported on January 17.

Mid-strength beer commands about 20 per cent of the total beer market in Australia. However, yoga-loving, gym fanatics who still enjoy a beer are shifting their tastes to low-carbohydrate and lower alcohol beers. Heineken Lion managing director Andrew Campbell is convinced that a sharp jump in sales of a new mid-strength Heineken 3 version since late August is hard evidence of that trend.

Mr Campbell said there had been no cannibalisation of the traditional Heineken brand. Total volumes across the two main brands in Australia in the three months ended December 31, 2016 were up more than 30 per cent.

"We're not seeing any cannibalisation," he said.

Mr Campbell has been at the helm of Heineken Lion since late 2014. It is a joint venture vehicle set up in 2004 between the Dutch brewer and Lion, which makes XXXX Gold, Tooheys and West End, and is owned by Japan's Kirin Corporation.

He estimated that more than 250,000 people ...More info on site

Barley news USA: The American Malting Barley Association updates its list of approved barley varieties for 2017
The American Malting Barley Association has updated its list of approved varieties for 2017, dropping one and adding another, Capital Press reported on January 13.

New to the list is Limagrain Cereal Seeds two-row variety LCS Genie.

“It’s done pretty well in trials in different areas of the Pacific Northwest,” said vice president Scott Heisel. “It looks like it will do well for the farmer. Some of our members say it makes good malt and good beer.”

The organization asks members each year if they would like to add varieties to the list and Genie was requested, Heisel said.

The association is a nonprofit trade association of 80 brewing, distilling and malting companies that use U.S. malting barley.

Gone from the list is the two-row variety Merit, an older variety. It is being phased out in favor of newer varieties, Heisel said.

Sister variety Merit 57 remains on the approved list.

“It’s just a little bit better variety, a little bit more disease resistance,” Heisel said.

The association updates its list to help barley remain competitive with farmers. The crop competes with corn, soybeans, wheat and canola, depending on the region of the U.S., Heisel said.

The industry continually tests new lines from breeders, Heisel said. Large brewers, smaller ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo considering majority stake increase in United Spirits - sources
Diageo is considering increasing its majority stake in Indian whiskey producer United Spirits, people familiar with the matter said, as the British maker of Johnnie Walker scotch strengthens its hold on the Asian country’s growing liquor market, Hospitality Ireland reported on January 18.

Diageo is weighing an open offer to the other shareholders in India’s biggest spirits maker, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Diageo has a 55 percent stake in United Spirits, which has a market value of about $4.7 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. No final decisions have been made and the company may decide against buying more shares, they said.

If completed, the deal would help Diageo build on its lead in the world’s largest whiskey market by volume, while pushing its other brands such as Smirnoff vodka and Guinness beer sales through United Spirits’s established and vast distribution network. Whiskey consumption in India is on the rise, aided by an expanding middle class and young demographics.

The British company has been considering an increased stake for several months, the people said. The decline in United Spirits shares, which have fallen 22 percent in the 12 months through January ...More info on site
