POLYPHENOL PROFILES OF DIFFERENT
HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON
BEER FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
A Japanese research team investigated the different
polyphenol profiles of the varieties Hallertau Mittelfrueh,
Hallertau Tradition, Saazer, Tettnanger, Perle and
Cascade. Analysing a range of different polyphenol
monomers, they found that the classic European land
varieties have more proanthocyanidin whereas the
others had more flavonones and prenylflavonoids.
These different profiles showed a flavor difference
in the brewed beers in regards to sweetness and
astringency. A strong correlation to the genetic
heritage was also visible. The researchers found that
proanthyocyanidin correlates with the fullness of beer
while the content of flavonone and prenylflavonoid
correlates with the intensity of astringency.

different hop varieties, poster presentation 129 at the World Brewing Congress.

USA: Constellation Brands Q2 sales and profit higher than Wall Street forecasts
|
Constellation Brands — the alcohol company behind beer names like Corona Extra and Modelo Negra — released its second quarter earnings report on October 5, revealing sales and profit that were higher than what Wall Street expected due in no small part to strength in its beer segment.
Second quarter revenue came in at $2.02 billion, up from the $1.96 billion consensus estimate and a 17% improvement over sales reported this time last year. Net income for the quarter came in at $358.9 million, up from $302.4 million in the prior-year period and resulting in earnings of $1.77 per share. This earnings per share figure marks a 13% increase over earnings reported in the year-ago quarter and a 12-cent per share improvement over what Wall Street was expecting to see.
Constellation executives attributed these results to a 20% increase in net beer sales and a 12% increase in wine and spirits net sales. While the November 2015 acquisition of Ballast Point helped Constellation with its year-over-year beer sales comparisons, the company’s shipment volume excluding Ballast Point beer grew 13.3% year-over-year, and Corona Extra and Modelo Especial sales benefited from a boosted marketing effort as well as consumer demand.
“During the quarter, we

USA: Constellation Brands buys craft whiskey maker High West Distillery
|
Constellation Brands Inc. has acquired craft whiskey maker High West Distillery in a roughly $160 million deal that expands the alcohol company’s business into the fast-growing bourbon and rye categories, Wine Business reported on October 5.
Utah-based High West has grown double-digits annually over the past three years and now sells about 70,000 nine-liter cases annually. Though it remains a small competitor in the American whiskey category, it has become a favorite among aficionados for its distinctive, high-price styles like Bourye, a limited edition blend of sweeter bourbon and spicier rye whiskeys that sells for more than $75 a bottle.
Acquiring the brand fits Constellation’s strategy of increasing its focus on premium alcohol products in the U.S. It is the third such deal over the past year from Constellation, which also acquired luxury winemaker Prisoner Wine Co. and craft brewer Ballast Point.
The deal signals Constellation’s interest in building out its liquor portfolio, which currently includes Svedka Vodka, Black Velvet Canadian whisky and Casa Noble Tequila. The bulk of its revenue comes from its Mexican beer brands Corona Extra and Modelo and wine brands like Robert Mondavi and Clos du Bois.
“This (acquisition) is foundational for us to build a truly significant craft spirits

USA, VA: Bull Island Brewing on track for October 29 opening
|
More than a year after a fire gutted the Phoebus building that was originally slated to house Bull Island Brewing, Hampton's newest beer company will open its downtown location at the end of October, the Daily Press reported on October 1.
Doug Reier, the Poquoson contractor-turned-brewer and owner of Bull Island, said he's been working in the space below the Crowne Plaza parking garage on Settlers Landing Road every day since the end of March. The only reprieve was a brief two-day trip to Cape Hatteras with his family.
The spot still smells more of cut wood than hops, but Reier said the brand new brewery is on track for an Oct. 29 opening.
The garage doors that open out to the river view are up and the bartop Reier made of clear resin and grains of barley is done.
Perhaps most importantly, the rows of stainless-steel vats that house the beer are up and running.
He has a floor to put in, some sprinkler work to do and a bunch of beer to brew, but just about everything for the main space is done.
"We're going to be pushing out beer. It's going to be a six-day-a-week brewhouse," said Thomas Lee, Bull Island's head brewer

USA, FL: Swan Brewing in the works for downtown Lakeland
|
Another microbrewery is in the works for downtown Lakeland, FL, The Ledger reported on September 30.
Swan Brewing passed its first major hurdle Sept. 20, earning approval of the Lakeland Planning and Zoning Board for a conditional use permit. That sets the stage for Monday, October 3rd’s public hearing on the project during the city’s regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall.
A second hearing is scheduled at an Oct. 17 commission meeting.
If all goes well, Swan Brewing could be up and running sometime next year in a space overlooking Lake Wire on the city’s west side, an area ripe for the kind of development going on in Lakeland’s core business district.
“We really wanted to bridge the west side of downtown,” said Dan Thumberg, a home brewer and founder of Swan.
City leaders appeared enthusiastic about Thumberg's project during Friday, September 30’s morning's City Commission work session.
"I'm pleased to see this move to the west," Commissioner Bill Read said.
Thumberg, 36, of Lakeland, said he’s negotiating to lease a former auto repair shop that’s been vacant for years. The building, owned by Anu Saxena, a Lakeland geotechnical engineer, sits adjacent to the U.S. Post Office on West Pine Street.
Swan Brewing would be the city’s second

USA, GA: Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing planning to open its second brewery
|
Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing has plans to open a second brewery "focusing on barrel-aged and sour beers”, the company announced on its website on September 30.
The new brewery would open alongside the Beltline summer 2017, complete with an "urban orchard to aid in wild fermentation" and a second tasting room.
"We started thinking about additional space for barrel-aging, but before we got too far down the road, we realized we needed to approach this potentially large business decision via our stated purpose."
In finding the right space for expanding, Monday Night Brewing considered "space for barrel-aging and souring, physical location in an underserved part of Atlanta, and a tasting room as key component of buildout."
The location, along the Beltline’s "Southwest corridor," is currently under construction in the Lee + White Development (at the corner of Lee St. and White St.), which will be home to other local food producers including Southern Aged Cheese, Doux South Pickles, and Honeysuckle Gelato.
"Southwest Atlanta isn’t as developed as the Westside, but it is already home to vibrant communities such as West End and Adair Park. We hope to be a meeting place for these neighbors, to employ these neighbors, and to invest back into the community

USA, MO: Griesedieck Brothers Brewery coming home to St. Louis
|
An old St. Louis beer is coming home.
Griesedieck Brothers Brewery began brewing in Germany in the 1700s, flourished in St. Louis' early 20th century heyday before merging with Falstaff in 1957 and then was brought back as a brand beginning in 2002. But until now, the revival Griesedieck brew has been contracted out to a brewery in Wisconsin, Riverfront Times reported on September 28.
That will change next year, says manager Bob Griesedieck, with the addition of a 23,000 square foot brewery in north city's Baden neighborhood. The stand-alone facility, at 1240 Switzer Avenue, used to house a medical supply company called Daley International.
Bob Griesedieck is the son of Ray Griesedieck, who spearheaded the company's revival fourteen years ago. He says the family's brewery will eventually open a tap room on site, although it's not clear yet whether that be part of the first phase.
Father and son plan to begin by brewing about 1,000 barrels — about three times what they've been having brewed in Wisconsin. They currently offer a pale ale, Bavarian-style white and a pilsener.
The facility has room for much greater capacity, but Griesedieck says the family is taking things slowly. "You've got to learn to crawl before

USA, WI: Swinging Bridge Brewing Company to start construction of its location in October
|
A new face is coming soon to downtown River Falls.
Construction begins in October at 122 S. Main Street for what owner and founder Dustin Dodge hopes will become a gathering place for the people of River Falls. That’s where a nano-brewery by the name of Swinging Bridge Brewing Company will open for business, the River Falls Journal reported on September 29.
Dodge is not native to River Falls, but hasn’t been able to tear himself away after attending school at UW River Falls four years ago. The appeal of the unique locality that kept him in the area was the same one that attracted him to opening a local business.
"River Falls is kind of a special community," said Dodge, originally from Spooner.
A need to give back to his adopted city was a huge part of why he decided to open a brewery in the first place.
Service is a part of Dodge’s life and this venture aligns itself to these current goals.
Dodge is a veteran of United States Air Force where he served for 11 years. Now Dodge is a part of the Minnesota National Guard as an aviator and also a member of the River Falls Fire Department.
He’s confidence about keeping

USA, OH: Actual Brewing Co. to open a brewpub in Clintonville in 2017
|
Fred Lee's Actual Brewing Co. is eccentric, even brewing a beer called Eccentricity, a French ale made with ginger and black pepper, the Columbus Dispatch reported on September 28.
So it shouldn't surprise anyone that the menu at the company's first brewpub will be built around "high-end" sloppy joe sandwiches.
Actual, whose brewery and taproom is folded into an anonymous industrial park, is planning to open a brewpub in Clintonville during the first part of 2017, Lee said.
Actual leased an empty flower shop at 2808 N. High St., next to a post office in a small strip center in front of Lucky's Market. It happens to be owned by the same landlord Actual rents from near John Glenn Columbus International Airport. The 2,200 square foot space will house a restaurant and a 10-barrel brewing system.
"I really like the location because I like the synergy between our brand and Lucky’s," Lee said of the market, which offers organic and specialty items. "Our beer performs well there. There is a good energy."
The location, in a corner that is hard to see from the street, is also a nod to Actual's roots.
"You come out to our taproom, and it's impossible to find," Lee said, laughing.

USA, AL: Serda Brewing Co. aiming at summer 2017 opening in downtown Mobile
|
A local brewing company has found a new home in downtown Mobile, WPMI Local reported on September 29.
Serda Brewing Co. recently closed a deal to set up shop at the old Goodyear Service Center on Government Street. The company's owner, John Serda, said finding a new home was years in the making.
Serda hopes to be open for business summer 2017.

USA, MI: Eastern Market Brewing Company aiming for a spring debut
|
The Detroit brewing industry has a long history in Eastern Market with companies like Eckhardt & Becker Brewery and Stroh’s housing their production facilities in the historic district through the early 20th century. None of these breweries still operate in the area, but one company is trying to bring beer business back to the market. Next year, Eastern Market Brewing Company, will launch in the former S&D Packing building off Riopelle and Winder next to BB’s Butcher Inn, Eater reported on September 29.
The owners Dayne Bartscht, Devin Drowley, and Paul Hoskin secured the facility in July after researching opportunities in Detroit, Chicago and Ann Arbor. With them is veteran brewer Hazen Schumacher, whose resume includes stints at Bell’s and Brew Detroit as well as 16 years with Atwater.
The 5,200-square-foot meat packing facility spans two floors and includes a rooftop deck with views of Shed 2 and both street and alley access. The owners say they plan to renovate the building in stages focusing first on the first floor, which will house the brewing equipment as well as a 120-seat taproom featuring long communal tables.
Christian Hurttienne Architects (Wright & Co, The Peterboro, Detroit City Distillery) is charged with developing the overall

Russia: Heineken to halt production at its plant in Kaliningrad
|
Heineken, the world's third-largest brewer, said on October 5 it would halt production at its plant in Kaliningrad in Russia from Jan. 1, 2017, due to a steady decline in Russia's beer market.
The decision to close the brewery in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, is "a forced measure" and was taken after an analysis of Russia's beer market which has been in decline for the past eight years, Heineken said.
"In the last seven years large brewers have been forced to shut down 11 breweries across Russia," it said.

Nigeria: Diageo scraps plans to lift stake in Guinness Nigeria due to tough conditions
|
Diageo has scrapped plans to lift its stake in Guinness Nigeria due to tough conditions in one of its biggest markets for the world-famous stout, the drinks company said on October 5.
The decision by Diageo, which makes Johnnie Walker Scotch and Smirnoff vodka, is another blow to Africa's biggest economy which is headed for its first full-year recession in quarter of a century following a plunge in oil prices.
Diageo said last year it planned to buy 15.7 percent of Guinness Nigeria for up to 41.37 billion naira, which would have taken Diageo's stake to 70 percent.
While the naira has since slumped after the central bank lifted a currency peg in June, Guinness Nigeria shares have also fallen to trade well below the price Diageo offered last year.
The company said on October 5 it would not proceed with the offer, choosing instead to focus its resources on continuing to support Guinness Nigeria.
Last month, Diageo granted Guinness Nigeria a $95 million loan facility to help it cope with dollar shortages. The Nigerian subsidiary has only used $30 million so far.
Limited access to foreign currency has contributed to some businesses pulling back from Nigeria due to difficulties repatriating income. International carriers United and

Vietnam: Listings by Vietnam’s top brewers could be delayed until Q1 2017
|
Listings by Vietnamese brewers Sabeco and Habeco could be delayed until the first quarter of 2017, a minister said, due to the completion of formalities and talks with existing investor Carlsberg, Reuters reported on October 5.
After the listings the government is expected to sell its stakes in the country's biggest brewers, ultimately raising $2.2 billion as it loosens its tight grip over one of Asia's most sought-after beer markets.
The brewers' share debuts were originally scheduled by the end of 2016.
It takes 12 to 14 weeks for a Vietnamese company to complete all the requirements for listing, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Hoang Quoc Vuong told a news briefing broadcast live by the government's website on October 4.
"The possibility for these two firms to make a share listing in 2016 is difficult," Vuong said in the broadcast.
"But their listings, if (there is) no delay, will be within the first quarter of 2017," he said. He gave no specific dates.
Hanoi-based Habeco, 81.79 percent owned by the government and which brews Bia Ha Noi beer, has also been solving "some pending issues" with Danish brewer Carlsberg, its strategic investor, and the process is taking much time, he said.
