PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR

ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be eliminated in the process.

Brewery news USA & Canada: Constellation Brands’ plans for IPO of its Canadian wine business could mean it will become more reliant on beer
A shake-up of Constellation Brands Inc’s portfolio could be on the cards as plans emerge for an initial public offering of its Canadian wine business later this year, Harpers Wine & Spirit Trade Review reported on June 6.

The beer, wine and spirits giant is allegedly seeking an estimated valuation of C$1 billion (US$772.02 million) for the division, which includes eight wineries and 160 retail locations across Ontario.

The splitting off of its wine portfolio could mean that the company, which owns major brands such as Corona beer and Robert Mondavi wines, could become more reliant on beer.

The company made a huge leap into the beer category in 2013 when it acquired the Corona business in the US, followed up with last year’s takeover of craft brewer Ballast Point Brewing Spirits Inc.

Robert Sands, Constellation chief executive officer, said earlier in the year that he believed the wine division at Constellation was being undervalued within the broader business.

“It doesn’t really get much visibility from a value perspective, and if we treat it more as a stand-alone entity, the fact that it is a very high-performing business in Canada will become a lot more visible,” he said.

In April, Constellation Brands Inc. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing reports 24% revenue increase in Q1
Brick Brewing reported first-quarter net income of C$788,353 as revenue increased 24 per cent.

In the same period a year ago, the Kitchener-based company earned net income of C$30,778.

It had revenue of C$9.5 million in the three months ended May 1, up from C$7.7 million a year ago.

"Quite simply, the first quarter was a tremendous start to the year," chief executive officer George Croft said on June 2 in a news release.

Brick said volume of Laker, the brand that accounts for more than 85 per cent of its beer volume, increased 13 per cent in the quarter. Volume of its Waterloo craft beer brand jumped 30 per cent, while volume of its Seagram Coolers brand rose 16 per cent.

The company said revenue from contract manufacturing, in which it makes and bottles products for other companies, increased 50 per cent in the first quarter.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Moosehead Breweries to build small-batch brewery in Saint John
A growing demand for variety in the beer market has prompted a major Canadian brewing company to think small.

Moosehead Breweries announced plans on May 31 for a small-batch brewery to be built in the uptown area of Saint John, N.B., separate from its large brewery on the west side of the city, The Globe and Mail reported.

“We see this new brewery as a way to express and explore our passion for beer,” said Moosehead president Andrew Oland.

“When we looked at how we wanted to more aggressively grow our brands, we knew we had to come to the market with more innovation. In order to do that, we were going to have to do it one way or another with smaller batch sizes.”

Oland said the company is looking for a 10,000-square-foot building to house the brewery, a tap room and a retail outlet to sell merchandise and beer.

He said the company is hoping to tap into the tourist market, which includes thousands of cruise ship passengers who visit the city each summer.

“These days, beer drinkers are interested in experiencing not just new beer styles, but the beer-making process itself,” he said.

Alexander Keith’s announced a similar project late last year to refurbish ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Schlafly Bottleworks undergoing major expansion
Schlafly Bottleworks is undergoing a major expansion in Maplewood and that means the beer brewer will stay at its location there for years to come, fox2now.com reported on June 1.

Schlafly has already spent more than a million dollars in the first of two expansion phases. The first phase which started in January and is already done included changes to the bottling line, updating how the beer is packaged and putting in new labeling equipment.

The second phase which is still to come will focus on adding more beer fermenting tanks to the Maplewood site. Schlafly’s CEO, James Pendegraft, says he basically wants to nearly double the company’s beer production. And he wants to do it in Maplewood.

'Our beers are popular all across the United States in the markets that we’re in. But we really are committed and focused on growing right here in St. Louis and so it was just a natural part of it. We’re all St. Louisans, we’re from the Show Me State and we want to be right here,' said Pendegraft.

The multi-million dollar expansion is slated to be done by early next year.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Chaos & Solace Brewery almost ready to launch in Chilliwack
Chilliwack’s Calvin Quaite are opening Chaos & Solace, a new craft brewery in downtown Chilliwack on Mill St., Chilliwack Progress reported on June 1.

“Even though neither of us has owned our own brewery [before], we have complementary skill-sets,” Quaite explained.

Coming from the production side, Quaite owns Connor’s Wine Cellar and True North Brew Supply in Chilliwack, and he’s an award winning home brewer. Joining him with experience from the sales and distribution side, Gagne was a partner at Old Yale Brewing.

“Together, we have a lot of synergies between knowing how a brewery operates and knowing how to make beer – great beer,” Quaite said.

These two business partners met delivering pizzas around Chilliwack back in 1991. After two decades of building up their industry know-how and passion for the brew, they decided to align their common interests and expertise with a new venture.

Freshly painted on the walls of this soon-to-open brewery reads their motto, ‘Passion for the craft in every glass.’

“We want to be Chilliwack’s brewery. We’re gonna keep this small, with craft-centric, hand-made specialty beers,” Quaite said.

They’ve been working with Fraser Valley farmers to find and forage local ingredients for the recipes. They’re also developing business partnerships to be able ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, PE: Upstreet Craft Brewing expands operations to meet growing demand for its products
A year after opening, Upstreet Craft Brewing has expanded its operation to meet the growing demand for its product not only in P.E.I., but in other provinces, as well, CBC.ca reported on June 1.

The brewing company purchased two large fermenters with an Innovation PEI contribution of C$18,177. Part of the fund will be used to develop a marketing campaign for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

"The support we received from Innovation PEI has been instrumental in helping us grow our business, doubling our capacity and allowing us to better serve our export markets in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick," said Mitch Cobb, CEO of Upstreet Craft Brewing in a written statement.

"Over the winter we expanded our market share in Nova Scotia to 16 restaurants and bars, which allowed us to create six new jobs – bringing our total Island workforce to 17 full and part-time employees."

Six months after its June 2015 opening, Upstreet Craft Brewing had exceeded its expectations of producing 80,000 litres of product, with sales surpassing their own targets.

In January, the brewery began distributing in Nova Scotia at Bishop's Cellar — a large private liquor distributor — and to other licensees.

"The success of its products and brand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Hammer & Forge Brewing Co. coming to Boones Mill this fall
This fall, the town of Boones Mill will join the growing list of localities in the Roanoke Valley that are home to breweries, Roanoke Times reported on June 2.

Caleb Williamson plans to open Hammer & Forge Brewing Co. in the former Medicine Shoppe space on Main Street. Williamson is leasing the 2,015-square-foot property.

Williamson started out as a home brewer three years ago. When he was laid off from his job in the struggling petroleum industry, he got the nudge he needed to turn his hobby into a career.

“I started home brewing a few years back and I think every home brewer has a dream of opening a brewery someday,” he said.

Though the jump from a small home-brewing operation to a business is a big one, Williamson won’t be going in blind. He’s been learning the ropes at Big Lick Brewing Co. in Roanoke. He reached out to the owners, asking if he could help out with their operation and get some experience producing beer on a larger scale.

Bryan Summerson, one of Big Lick’s owners, said the brewery is happy to let others get a peek at their brewing process. They’ve also worked with the owners of Twin Creeks Brewing, which ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Little Tree Brewing now open Fridays to Sundays in Grover Beach
Beer is once again flowing at ManRock Brewing Co.’s former spot off Oak Park Boulevard in Grover Beach, The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported.

Startup Little Tree Brewing is open Friday to Sundays, pouring tasters, pints and growlers of West Coast-style beers brewed with East Coast yeast sourced from an old New Jersey brewery. The fusion reflects the bi-coastal background of the founders, Jason and Kristen Tesarz, with backing from friend Eric Bischoff.

The Tesarzes, who moved from the Bay Area to start the business, were attracted to the spot because it was a former brewery and didn’t need any structural work. The team invested about $100,000 in brewing equipment, with 1-barrel kettles and 3-barrel fermenters capable of brewing up to 25 barrels.

“We figured ManRock did well here, so we thought that was a good sign,” said Jason Tesarz, a former homebrewer who works during the week as an engineer at a San Jose-based cybersecurity startup.

Operating on a year-to-year lease in the space at 191 S. Oak Park Blvd., the Tesarzes are aiming to expand their tasting room’s hours and offer nine beers on tap consisting of five core beers — a blonde ale, an amber ale, a porter and two IPAs ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Airways Brewing pushes back the opening of its new Kent tap room
Airways Brewing has pushed back the opening of its new Kent tap room to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, Kent Reporter said.

The company had initially planned to open its new facility on June 14 at 8611 S. 212th St.

Airways co-owner Dione Dittmar said on June 2 that more time was needed to make sure the new site passed all inspections and had everything ready to go on opening day.

Construction on the 9,000-square-foot facility, 8611 S. 212th St., started in March and is expected to be ready to produce beer in July.

The new spot will replace the original brewery and tap room and will allow for up to a fourfold increase in production as well as an increase in seating capacity.

The original tap room, on West Valley Highway and South 196th Street, will be open through Friday, June 17.

Brewery news USA, UT & MD: Epic Brewing expands distribution to Maryland
Epic Brewing continues its expansion on the east coast with distribution in Maryland. Epic is partnering with Backup Beverage LLC, Maryland’s newest craft beer distributor. Initial distribution will cover the counties west of the Chesapeake Bay with future expansion planned in the east, Brewbound.com reported on June 3.

Backup Beverage was founded in 2015 by Chris Turner. With more than a decade of Craft Beer distribution under his belt, Chris struck out on his own to create a beverage distribution company based on a simple principle: Craft Beer Sold the Right Way.

“We are committed to building brands and the craft beer community through education and excellent customer service. We’re very excited to be partnering with Epic Brewing and offering their unique and highly rated beers,” said Chris Turner.

The initial brand launch will highlight Epic’s new lineup including Tart ‘n Juicy Sour IPA and Los Locos, Mexican-Style Lager with sea salt and lime, both offered in 12oz cans. Backup Beverage will also be carrying Epic’s popular barrel aged beers, IPA’s, and Belgian-Style fruit beers along with unique offerings from Epic’s expanding sour program.

“Chris Turner is an expert in Craft Beer and we are thrilled to be part of his new company and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Erie Brewing Company moving out of Erie for further expansion
Erie Brewing Company is moving out of the city of Erie and into Harborcreek, YourErie reported on June 2. Erie Brewing Company executives say they wanted to stay downtown but just couldn't afford expanding in the city due to acquisition fees and taxes. They're building a 19-thousand foot facility near Knowledge Parkway in Harborcreek. Construction could begin as soon as this summer.

Brewery news USA, KY: Braxton Brewing Company expands distribution to Lousiville
Braxton Brewing Company will be expanding its distribution footprint within the state of Kentucky, Brewbound.com reported.

Beginning on June 6th, the Covington, Kentucky-based company will launch can and draft beer distribution to Louisville in partnership with River City Distributing. In line with their origin, the company will host an Official Launch Party at Garage Bar on Market St. in NuLu on June 9th.

“It’s an incredible feeling to finally be sending beer to the Louisville area! While we’re a Kentucky brewery, we aren’t truly apart of the Kentucky brewing community until we have distribution in Louisville.” Said Jake Rouse, Braxton Brewing Company Co-Founder and CEO. “We’re also thrilled to welcome Jason Lyvers to the team as our Louisville Sales Manager. As a Louisville native, he will be a great addition to the team. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with River City and some amazing locations to make this ‘Drive’ a reality!”

Braxton Drive celebrates the company’s path to expanding distribution while paying homage to where the story began, in the garage on Braxton Drive in Union, Kentucky. To kickoff the Louisville market, Braxton Brewing Company is hosting a series of launch parties with the Braxton Drive theme.

Brewery news USA, NC: Triangle Brewing Company to liquidate assets after filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy
Durham-based Triangle Brewing Company will look to liquidate its assets after filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Triangle Business Journal reported on June 3.

In its filing, Triangle Brewing lists $415,000 in liabilities, including $70,000 owed to the Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the U.S. Treasury. Triangle Brewing values its assets, which include four Pacific Brewery System Fermenters, at $226,000.

The brewery had in mid-April announced it would close and held a last-day party on April 30, though the bankruptcy filing, which was filed in late May, had not been previously reported.

“We began in the earlier days of the craft beer boom that we are all still witness to today,” according to a message on Triangle Brewing’s website. “At a time when names like Highland Brewing, Red Oak, and Carolina Brewing Company were far from household names, when Top of The Hill, Carolina Brewery, and Front Street Brewing were local curiosities, and Sierra Nevada and Samuel Adams were the alpha and omega of craft as far as most people were concerned.”

Chapel Hill law firm Northern Blue represented Triangle Brewing in the bankruptcy filing. A message left with the law firm was not immediately returned.

Brewery news China: China may approve AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller as soon as this month
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s $107 billion acquisition of SABMiller Plc is nearing Chinese approval after the companies agreed to divest the maker of Snow beer, the world’s top-selling brand, Bloomberg reported on June 8 citing people familiar with the matter.

Approvals for both transactions could come as soon as this month based on typical review timelines, clearing one of the final hurdles for the biggest beer deal in history.

Though China’s Ministry of Commerce may attach some conditions to the deal, including the Snow divestiture, regulators see no major hurdles, said one of the people. Some local beermakers told the ministry that they don’t object to the takeover as it won’t have a big impact on the Chinese market, another person said.

The merged company would redraw control of the global beer market. Following divestitures, the deal will keep Budweiser, Beck’s and Stella Artois under AB InBev’s roof, while ceding control of brands including Miller in the U.S. and Peroni and Pilsner Urquell in Europe.

In clearing these global hurdles, the beer mega deal contrasts with other big proposed tie-ups that unraveled amid antitrust scrutiny, including Halliburton Co.’s failed bid for Baker Hughes Inc., Staples Inc.’s foiled merger with Office Depot Inc. and ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev proposes enhancing employee-share program amid local union’s plans to contest approval of its takeover of SABMiller
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV has proposed enhancing a South African employee-share program amid local union plans to contest the approval of its takeover of SABMiller Plc, as the brewer seeks to clear the last hurdle for regulatory consent in the country, Bloomberg reported on June 7.

AB InBev will ensure participants of the plan receive the same premium offered to SABMiller shareholders by guaranteeing a minimum value for the so-called Zenzele shares in SABMiller’s South African unit when the program matures in 2020, based on the 44 pounds per share offered to SAB shareholders, AB InBev said on June 7. The maker of Budweiser is also proposing an upfront cash payment, which would be paid soon after the takeover is completed and would be included in the guaranteed amount.

This was the extent of Sonoda’s experience with beer until 1996, when she was working as a parking lot attendant at Tokyo Disneyland in Chiba Prefecture. Japan’s harsh brewing laws had been loosened two years earlier, reducing beer production requirements mandated by the Ministry of Finance from 2 million litres to a far more manageable, yet still significant, 60,000 litres. Smaller breweries began to pop up across the country.

Disney’s parent company was developing the area outside Maihama ...More info on site
