LEARNING FROM WINE AROMA RESEARCH

ABSTRACT
Hops for beer is like grapes for wine, so why not learn something about hops from wine researchers? This French research team is looking into the potential and contribution of sulfur related aroma compounds present in many hop varieties. They found that there is a signficant potential for the varieties studied for precursors leading to 4MMP, 3MH and 3MHA. With these initial findings they have three questions they want to follow with in the future: 1) What is the impact of process transformation of hops on aroma potential? 2) What is the impact of fermentation to release thiols? and 3) Are there other sources for thiols in beer? I see exciting times for hops aroma research coming!

Brewery news USA: Justice Department poised to approve AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller - sources
The U.S. Justice Department is poised to approve Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s takeover of SABMiller Plc in an agreement that may include measures to keep the beer behemoth from edging craft brewers from shelves, Bloomberg reported on June 1, citing people familiar with the matter.

U.S. clearance of the $107 billion combination is on track for later this month, according to three people familiar with the process. The accord could include limits on the combined company’s ownership of distributors, said one of the people.

U.S. antitrust approval would bring the maker of Budweiser a step closer to completing the industry’s biggest merger ever and redraw control of the global beer market. The merged company will be followed by Heineken NV and Molson Coors Brewing Co. in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by market capitalization. Following divestitures to win regulatory approvals, the deal will keep Budweiser, Beck’s and Stella Artois under AB InBev’s roof, while selling brands including Miller in the U.S. and Peroni and Pilsner Urquell in Europe.

The transaction, which was agreed to in November 2015 in a bid to boost sales by gaining access to emerging markets, has already won antitrust approval in more than a dozen jurisdictions, including the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Neshaminy Creek Brewing opening second brewery in Fishtown
Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. is opening a brewery and tasting room on a stretch of Fishtown's Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia Business Journal reported.

The Bucks County-based brewery is moving in to a 5,655-square-foot space at 957-63 Frankford Ave., across the street from the relatively new music venue and a short distance from the Yards Brewing Co.'s location on Delaware Avenue.

"We looked at a few different spaces, and that was by far the best fit as far as the size and what the landlord and developers were willing to do for us," head brewer Jeremy Myers said. "The location is unreal. It's a great location."

Beer-lovers in Philadelphia are already familiar with Neshaminy Creek's brews, which can be found at bars and distributors throughout the city.

This will be the company's second location; it's original, 59,000-square-foot location is in Croydon.

There will be at least 24 taps — possibly 30 — at the Fishtown location, said Myers, and the brewery's six core beer brands will make their way to Fishtown. And there will be a number of brews that will only available in that location.

"We'll have seven to 10 different beers every month," Myers said, "or until they run out."

Some of the Croydon brewery-specific releases could ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Three Heads Brewing preparing to launch on June 16
The long-awaited Three Heads Brewing facility in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts is slated to open next month, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Three Heads, 186 Atlantic Ave., will officially open its doors to the drinking public on Thursday, June 16, right in the middle of Rochester Real Beer Week.

That opening party, which runs from 3 till 11 p.m., will kick off four straight days of live music, food trucks and new beers. 3HB has promised four new beers for the opening week, including a collaborative brew with Rochester craft beer pioneer Rohrbach Brewing.

"It is the craziest thing ever to finally have it here," Three Heads co-founder Geoff Dale said. "It's like having a triathlon, and for a big guy like me, that's a miracle, because I would probably be dead within the first 10 minutes. But to finally be at the finish line of a triathlon, it is the most amazing feeling. Even though it's only been a year for the project, we started planning this 18 months before we started construction.

"So much has gone into this. It's like having 12 birthdays and 12 Christmases all rolled up into one, and then you throw in good beer."

Brewery news USA, OH: Y Bridge Brewing coming to Zanesville in the fall
A local man has a plan to open the second brewery in Zanesville, Zanesville Times Recorder reported on May 26.

Ray Ballard lives in Nashport and is a full-time nurse at Mount Carmel New Albany, and in his free time he is working to open the Y Bridge Brewing Co. The brewery will be located in the back of the Operation Spirit building at 1417 Linden Ave.

"I grew up here and I was always fascinated with the Y Bridge," Ballard said. "The bridge identifies with Zanesville and local people will be able to relate."

Ballard fell in love with beer in the 1990s and he started brewing at his home after reading an article about how Jim Koch started Sam Adams beer company after brewing his first batch of beer in his kitchen. In 1996, he went to Connecticut to brew test batches of beer for a friend who was planning to open a brewery. In 2000, the Olde Burnside Brewing Co. opened and Ballard worked as a brewer from 2000 to 2003 before returning home to get his nursing degree.

The Y Bridge Brewing Co. is set to open in the fall if everything goes according to plan, Ballard said. He is ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: The Napanee Beer Company opens in Southeastern Ontario
The small Southeastern Ontario town of Napanee is now home to its own namesake brewery, with the opening of The Napanee Beer Company this past weekend, Canadian Beer News reported on May 24.

Located at 450 Milligan Lane, the brewery launched on May 1 with two initial beers – Deadline Premium Lager and Blacklist German Black Lager – available in 473 ml cans, and 1 and 2 litre growlers. A third beer – Mayday Belgian Pale Ale – will be added to the line-up this coming weekend.

Brewery news USA, VA: Mustang Sally Brewing Co. opens in Chantilly
Mustang Sally Brewing Co., Fairfax County, Virginia’s newest craft brewer, held its grand opening May 25 in Chantilly, fulfilling a dream for its owner that has been more than two decades in the making, WTOP reported.

Sean Hunt, a former corporate lawyer, started home brewing about 25 years ago, but put his ambitions on hold for corporate life. Two years ago, Hunt decided it was time to pursue the dream.

Mustang Sally joins an increasingly long list of craft brewers in the D.C. region, but Hunt says he has discovered there is as much camaraderie in the craft beer business here as there is competition.

“We had a lot of help through the design phase of building out the brewery,” Hunt said. “Even last week, we were trying to brew late at night, and we noticed that we had a piece of equipment that was faulty. One of the breweries lent us their equipment overnight so we could get through the brew.”

In fact, owners of just about every Northern Virginia brewery came to Mustang Sally’s grand opening.

A new brewery in the D.C region opens with increasing regularity, so is the local craft brew scene becoming too saturated?

“I hear that a lot, and I ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Good City Brewing scheduled to open on June 17
The time is almost ripe for the opening of Good City Brewing, Milwaukee's first East Side urban brewery and the second of eight breweries slated to open in the coming months, OnMilwaukee.com reported.

Good City Brewing has announced that it will open its taproom, at 2108 N. Farwell Ave., to the public beginning on Friday, June 17.

The space, which was designed by Rinka Chung Architecture, sports exposed cream city brick and industrial elements along with an open feel. Half-walls separate production from the taproom, giving visitors a view (and a whiff) of the brewing process.

The taproom, which will seat about 130, will feature an L-shaped bar with a 16 tap capacity. The plan is to feature core beers as well as some experimental, barreled and seasonal brews, along with special releases that will be available in the taproom only.

On the north side of the bar, visitors will find a combination of tables and bar stools, as well as a lounge style area near the entry. Meanwhile, garage doors along the front of the building can be opened to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the brewery.

Every aspect of the design is meant to incite conversation and collegiality.

Brewery news USA, MT: Bridger Brewing coming close to maxing out its capacity with sales in tap room
This year, patrons of Bridger Brewing will drink more than 1,600 barrels of beer. That makes co-owner David Breck happy, but it doesn’t leave much beer for distribution beyond the tasting room, Great Falls Tribune reported.

“We’re going to be coming close to maxing out our capacity with sales in the tap room,” Breck said. “To do any off-site sales of any consequence, we’re going to need an off-site facility. This isn’t big enough for a production brewery.”

The brewery has a 10-barrel system now and aims to expand to 40 to 50, which would allow for canning, kegs and distribution.

“We’ve been growing 20 to 30 percent per year at the pub, and getting into the packaging side is a whole different ball game,” he said. “The quality of our beer will speak for itself.”

Vigilante IPA is “always king around here,” but the Lee Metcalf Pale Ale and seasonals are also popular. The most ardent cult following may be Antilogy Black IPA.

“When we’re out of that we get the most discourse from our guests, those regulars who have been coming a long time,” Breck said. “They’re bummed, but they have a backup plan.”

A new spring beer is the Mad Mile Cream Ale, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Evergreen Craft Ales opens to the public in Ontario
Ontario Beverage Network reports that the first residential-based brewery in Ontario opened to the public for the first time on May 21.

Two beers were available on the weekend – Maiden Voyage Pale Ale and Evergreen Amber Ale – both in 473 ml cans.

Brewery news USA, WI: Biloba Brewing moving to larger location in Brookfield
Biloba Brewing made their rumored move official on May 26: The family-owned brewery plans to move from its current location at 18725 W. Pleasant St. in Brookfield to a larger location, Milwaukee Business Journal reported.

The new address, 2970 W. Brookfield Road, has more space for a tasting room, a 10-barrel brewing system and permission to put a silo at the side of the building.

Biloba was founded by Jean and Gordon Lane. Gordon Lane is president of Chilton-based Briess Malt & Ingredients Co.

The family expects to move this summer.

Brewery news USA, AL: Alabama’s craft brewers will finally be able to sell six packs and large bottles of beer directly to consumers
Alabama's growing craft beer industry will take another step toward the big time on June 1 as a new law takes effect allowing the state's 25 or so craft breweries to sell six packs, large bottles and other containers of beer directly to consumers. Previously, Alabama was the only state that banned such sales, The Lebanon Daily Record reported.

The head of the Alabama Brewers Guild said the change, which is coming about because of a law passed this year by legislators and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley, could help stoke further expansion of the state's brewing industry.

"It's a big move forward," said Dan Roberts, executive director of the trade organization.

Different companies plan to sell different types of containers, Roberts said, and in July brewers and traditional retailers will gather to address concerns from stores worried about losing business to breweries, which are scattered in cities large and small from the coast to the Tennessee Valley.

Alabama brewers have been selling beer in retail stores through distributors for several years, but they could only sell draft beer by the glass to customers who visited a brewery.

The change will provide an immediate boost for brewing companies that will be able to sell beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: “Open source” Halo Brewery launched in Toronto
Six months after its location and other details were announced, Canada’s first “open source” brewery has opened in Toronto’s Junction Triangle neighbourhood, Canadian Beer News reported.

Co-founded by long-time homebrewers Eric Portelance and Callum Hay, Halo Brewery will be releasing the recipes for all of its beers via its website for other brewers to view and use and they see fit.

Located at 247 Wallace Ave., Halo opened to the public on May 17 with an initial line-up of four beers available: Ion Cannon, a Gose with strawberry and kiwi; Half-Truth, a session IPA; The Final Straw, a tart Wit with strawberry and rosehips; and Magic Missile, a dry hopped pale ale.

All beers are available in the taproom in 12 oz. glasses and 5 oz. samples, and in 500 ml and 1 litre bottles in the retail store. Operating hours are currently 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesdays to Fridays, and 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as this coming Holiday Monday.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Black Bellows Brewing launches and releases its first beer in the Collingwood and Toronto areas
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a new brewing company has launched in Collingwood, and has released its first beer to licensees in the Collingwood and Toronto areas.

Black Bellows Brewing has been founded by Scott Brown and Peter Braul, who are brewing under contract while scouting for a permanent location in Collingwood.

The debut beer from the company is Black Bellows White Beer, a Belgian-style wheat ale that Braul describes to OBN as follows:

Like with most witbiers, we use citrus and spices, but we’re using a unique blend and focus on sourcing on the freshest spices available, which makes a big difference. Our goal was to create a beer that, as complex as it is, doesn’t have any sharp edges, flavour wise – you can’t really pick out any of the specific spices, fruit or herbs.

Black Bellows White Beer is currently available exclusively on draught, but bottled product is expected to be available at the LCBO later this year.

Brewery news New Zealand: Lion New Zealand buys craft brewery Panhead Custom Ales
Lion - Beer, Spirits and Wine (NZ), New Zealand's biggest beer maker, has agreed to buy Panhead Custom Ales from the family of founder Mike Neilson, its second such purchase of a popular craft brewer after the acquisition of Dunedin-based Emerson's Brewing Co in 2012, New Zealand Herald reported on May 27.

No price was disclosed for Upper Hutt-based Panhead, the trading name of the Neilson family's Brew Strong Ltd. As with the Emerson's purchase, Panhead's Neilson is to stay on with the business, putting his award-winning beers into a Lion stable that includes the Speight's, Lion, Steinlager and Mac's brands. Lion said Josh Drake, a former financial consultant, will be general manager of Panhead, a position he has held for two months, according to his LinkedIn page.

The acquisition underlines the growing popularity of craft beers in a market where overall consumption is declining. An ANZ Bank report on the sector, published last year, said beer sales in New Zealand had fallen 12 percent since 2008, yet off-premise craft beer sales had risen 42 percent between 2014 and 2015 and now had 13 percent of the market.

Lion also owns the Mac's brand beers, having acquired the rights from Nelson's McCashin's Brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: Beer sales total 6.6 mln hl last year
Total beer sales, including imported brands, in Cameroon amounted to 6.6 mln hl last year, Journal du Cameroun reported on May 31.

According to a report by the nation’s largest brewer, Société anonyme des brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), its market share was 78% last year, followed by Guinness’ 14.4% and Union camerounaise de brasseries’ 7.2%.

SABC’s sales last year totalled 5.1 mln hl, which represents a decline of 5.7% on 2014. The company blamed the decline on a hike in excise duties and higher competition.

Brewery news India: Vijay Mallya likely to step down as chairman of United Breweries
Vijay Mallya is likely to step down as chairman of United Breweries, being automatically disqualified in line with the market regulator's notification barring wilful defaulters from holding board positions in listed companies. Controlling stakeholder Heineken and the board of directors will meet soon in this regard to identify a successor, Economic Times reported on May 27 citing people aware of the matter.

According to the 2009 shareholder agreement between Mallya and Heineken, the former has the right to choose his successor. While Mallya has been vocal about his intention to repay dues to banks, he will be unable to challenge the wilful defaulter tag as of now. "Yes, this definitely debars Mallya as chairman. We will obviously have to discuss this and Heineken will discuss this with Mallya as a shareholder," said a UB director.
