USA, IN: Upland Brewing Co. to expand in Bloomington
|
A burning need for a bigger barrel back-stock room has brought Upland Brewing Co. to the brink of breaking ground on a new building, The Herald-Times reported on August 12.
The Bloomington Plan Commission on August 10 approved Upland Brewery's site plan for the proposed 6,240-square-foot building. The new storage and brewing facility will be situated next to the existing Upland Brewing facility at 350 W. 11th St in Bloomington.

Canada, ON: Compass Brewing to open in Timmins by February 2017
|
One of the partners behind an in-the-works brewery in the small Northeastern Ontario city contacted Canadian Beer News with details of their parallel venture, CBN reported on August 13.
Compass Brewing is being founded by Kevin Patriquin, Mael Girard and Corey McLister, a trio of homebrewers who started planning early this year under the temporary name Timmins Brewery before settling on the Compass Brewing name in June.
The partners hope to open within 18 months.

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing launches a new brewhouse in Kitchener
|
Brick Brewing unveiled its new C$9.3-million brewing facility on Bingemans Centre Drive in Kitchener on August 13, capping off an expansion project that sees the state-of-the-art plant fully operational two months ahead of schedule, Waterloo Record reported on August 14.
The new brewhouse will produce all beer branded as Waterloo Brewing Co. — Brick's craft brewing division — along with seasonal small-batch brews.
Production has now wrapped up at Brick Brewing's original brewery on King Street South in Waterloo, said director of engineering and maintenance Luigi Fantin.
On August 13 marked the first 24-hour continuous production cycle in Kitchener, Fantin said as politicians, media and guests toured the facility.
"This is the big day," Fantin said.
Featuring cutting-edge equipment from Germany, the new brewhouse is three times larger than the old one, and can produce five times more beer — up to 216,000 litres per day, compared with 42,000 litres a day at the old plant.
But it's also far more efficient, using 30 per cent less electricity and 50 per cent less natural gas while producing half the waste water.
It's also designed for flexibility, allowing the company to accommodate handcrafted small-batch brews as well as larger production runs.

USA, OR: Deschutes Brewery and 10 Barrel Brewing to expand production outside of Oregon
|
Deschutes Brewery and 10 Barrel Brewing, both based in Bend, announced they have expanded or plan to expand beer sales into markets outside of Oregon, Bend Bulletin reported on August 14.
Deschutes Brewery, on August 11, announced they will grow their footprint in Michigan. Three distributors — Alliance Beverage for the western shoreline, Fabiano Brothers for central Michigan and Daniel L. Jacob & Co. for Ann Arbor and south — are partnering with Deschutes Brewery.
The brewery, the seventh-largest craft brewer in the nation, first moved into Michigan, to Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing, in October.
“We knew it would take us a while to fill in Michigan,” Stacy Denbow, business development director for the brewery, stated in the release, “but it was always about making the right decisions instead of quick ones. I’m confident in our new partnerships and we’re excited to expand our presence in the state.”
At 10 Barrel Brewing, co-founder Jeremy Cox said, on August 13, that the brewery began distributing its beers the first week of June in Northern California. He said 14 wholesalers are carrying 10 Barrel Brewing products from San Francisco to Redding. Cox said sales were strong right out of the gate.

USA, MA: Old Planters Brewing becomes first certified brewery in Beverly
|
Old Planters Brewing Co becomes the first licensed and operational brewery in Beverly, Wicked Local Beverly reported on August 13.
Matt Sullivan and Ben Garry started homebrewing beer about four years ago.
“We started really liking IPAs,” Sullivan said, explaining that it’s been really hard to get his hands on the hard to find, yet much sought-after Pliny the Elder, a double IPA from Russian River Brewing Company. “So we decided to try to make it ourselves … and it was good, but I still don’t know if that’s what a Pliny tastes like.”
About a year and a half ago, Garry and Sullivan began the brewery licensing process. During that time, the pair worked their way through red tape at the federal, state and local levels.
The brewery setup consists of a large boiling kettle, repurposed kegs that serve as the mash tun and hot liquor tank, as well as several 17-gallon fermentation tanks.
“We’re small,” Sullivan noted.
“The goal is to be in Beverly,” Sullivan said. “We have no outside goals except to try to build the brand.”
Along the way, Garry and Sullivan have been able to seek the advice of local “beer experts.”

USA, IL: Forbidden Root brewpub to open in Chicago by the end of September
|
“It all comes from this notion of botanic brewing, which had a 10,000-year run,” said Robert Finkel, founder of Forbidden Root, a Chicago-based brewery. In the 1800s, “the soda cartridge was invented and that changed everything,” Crain's Chicago Business reported on August 12.
Finkel founded Forbidden Root more than two years ago, aiming to return to botanic brewing with the creation of herb- and spice-based beers. Forbidden Root's brewpub is to open in late September in the old Hub Theater at 1746 W. Chicago Ave. in western Chicago.
Forbidden Root's brews are already on the market. The company contracts with another brewery for production and distributes to about 150 restaurants and 200 retail locations in the Chicago area, and has a growing presence in New York.
The beers—Forbidden Root, Sublime Ginger, Wildflower Pale Ale, Heavy Petal and Shady Character—combine spices from around the world and have flavour profiles all their own.
“It doesn't taste like anything I've ever had,” said BJ Pichman, who was a home brewer for about eight years before he became operations manager of Forbidden Root. “That to me was the most exciting revelation—to know that we were doing something that no one else out there was doing.”

USA, NY: Lucky Hare Brewing Company to open its doors in Hector on August 22
|
The Lucky Hare Brewing Company started with the fascination of a nearly 100-year-old barn in Hector, The Ithaca Voice reported on August 12.
"It was screaming, 'Put a brewery in front of me and make really great beer,'" said co-founder Ian Conboy.
The former marine biologist said he never thought he'd open a brewery and the idea literally snowballed after finding the barn at 6085 Beckhorn Road in Hector.
Conboy said he was driving with his mom, Sue Thiel, and stepfather, Richard Thiel, when they saw it up for sale in February 2013. He said he and his stepfather were already making beer for themselves and became taken by the thought of sharing their love for brews with others.
They purchased the barn that October and the co-founders have spent nearly two years prepping the site and perfecting their craft.
"We wanted to do it right, so we took our time instead of just rushing and getting it out there," Conboy said of the nano-brewery.
The company has three barrels, which each make 31 gallons of beer, and is averaging making about 186 gallons of beer a month.

World: Commodity markets collapse in July on numerous bearish trends

Commodity markets collapsed in July. Fundamentals were bearish: large, burdensome grain and oilseed crops and stocks in the world, improved weather outlook in the U.S. and Europe, initial harvest results of wheat and barley clearly better than forecast, increasing offers of crude oil, pessimistic forecasts for the world economy, particularly China, political unrest and warfare in Eastern Europe and the Islamic world, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their August report.
As always in such situations, financial funds rush into markets and accelerate price movements. The question is, whether markets have reached a bottom. Some affirmative indications are: India and Iran announced import duties, farmers are pleading for subsidies, and French farmers started a self-defence by stopping German and Spanish food imports at the border.
As per sources reports, world market prices dropped by around 10% in July.

New Zealand: New Zealand’s craft beer sales soar, number of breweries doubles from 2010 - report
|
Sales of craft beer outside New Zealand’s pubs, clubs and restaurants have soared 42% in a year and now account for 13% of beer sales outside these premises by value, according to an ANZ Bank report.
It found the number of New Zealand’s craft brewers has more than doubled to 111 from 52 in 2010 and about 25 of them are exporting to more than 40 offshore markets.
Another 20 brewers could start exporting within the next two years, says the report.
New Zealand brewers attract investment at twice their annual revenue, higher than other industries, reflecting strong growth expectations.
“We’ve seen a material shift in thinking over the past year, with production soaring and brewers focusing more and more on overseas markets,” says ANZ regional manager Rob Simcic, who oversees the bank’s food and beverage strategy.
Asia, including China, will be a key market because of its fast-growing middle classes developing a taste for craft beer.
New Zealand craft beer sales to Asia doubled in the last two years, with half the volume going to China, but still only total NZ$2.7 million.
He says brewers tell the bank their exports are just getting started.

Serbia: Beer consumption down 33% since 2008
|
Beer consumption in Serbia is down by 33 per cent compared to 2008, as the economic crisis is affecting purchasing power, ESM reported on August 14.
Speaking to the Tanjug news agency, the CEO of local brewer Apatinska Pivara (part of Molson Coors Europe), Dragan Radivojevic, said that beer consumption in 2014 amounted to four million hectolitres, compared to six million in 2008.
Other negative factors, according to Radivojevic, are the continued exodus from the country of young people, who are the top consumers, and the problem of the ageing population.
The high unemployment rate among young people is an additional problem not only for the beer industry, but also for other industries and the country as a whole.
On the other hand, there has been an increase in sales of cheaper beer, whose price has fallen since the beginning of the year by around 4 per cent, contributing to a worse financial performance of Serbian breweries compared to previous years.
Although other countries in the Former Yugoslavia region have seen a decline in beer sales due to the crisis, Radivojevic said that this drop is far lower than in Serbia and amounts to between five and seven per cent.

Ireland: Heineken may acquire or partially take over drinks distributor Comans Wholesale
|
Heineken Ireland is in discussions that may lead to the acquisition of partial takeover of Comans Wholesale, one of the country’s leading drinks distribution businesses, Newstalk reported on August 14.
Industry sources suggest that any full takeover of Comans Wholesale could cost Heineken in the region of €25 mln.
Comans, which is principally owned by Geoff and Tom Coman of the well-known, Rathgar-based family of publicans, distributes a wide range of beers, wines and ciders to pubs, supermarkets and off-licences around the country including Dutch Gold, Prazsky and Druids.
It operates from a major distribution depot off of the M50 near Tallaght and employs some 130 people.
Heineken already has a close working relationship with Comans, whose subsidiary companies supply draft Heineken and Murphys beer to the nation’s pubs.
The takeover talks are understood to have been triggered in part by the launch of Heineken’s new cider, Orchard Thieves as one of Coman’s competing distribution companies, Gleesons, is now owned by C&C, makers of rival Bulmers cider products.
A spokesman for Heineken has declined to comment on whether the company is in talks with the wholesaler.
