So what is the difference between seeded and unseeded hops?
ABSTRACT
Most of the hops available today are unseeded. However in the UK you will still find male hop plants in the hop gardens. Brewers would like to know if the presence of seeds in hops has an impact on brewing characteristics (for the good or bad). This German team of researchers have now found that neither foam characteristics nor the hop oil composition was affected in brewing trials comparing seeded and unseeded hops, but what proved to be different was the beta-glucosidase activity (higher with unseeded hops). This might eventually have an impact on the aroma development overtime with the release of bound aroma compounds in the finished beers.

USA, IL: Dog's Paw Brewing opens in Elgin on July 9
|
Dog's Paw Brewing located on 74 S. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin, IL ended up opening to the public earlier than anticipated, Chicago Daily Herald reported on July 9.
"Word got out and people started showing up, and all of a sudden we got slammed," said owner Iran Garcia.
His wife Charlotte Hornbeak Garcia said about 50 people were expected, but at least 200 showed up.
On July 9, the bar and restaurant was open to the public.
"We want to be the Mecca for craft beers in the suburbs," Garcia said. "We're going to carry a lot of craft beer that a lot of places don't carry, or don't want to carry. The small breweries that are brewing need a chance to put their beers next to the big guys."
"We're taking it one day at a time," Garcia said, adding that he expects to have a grand opening in a couple of weeks or so.
Garcia has been working on the enterprise for about a year and a half, after he and former partner Tyrrell Tomlin signed a lease for the space and parted ways earlier this year.

The old Tarpon Springs firehouse, a 1950s-era addition to what was previously the local jail, built more than 100 years ago, is now home to Silverking Brewing Company, Tampabay.com reported on July 13.
Silverking Brewing takes its inspiration from the Tarpon Springs’s heritage. The city's roots as a fishing village are reflected in the decor.
A trend in bar decor lately is using lots of reclaimed wood and industrial fixtures to create a rustic look. At Silverking Brewing, this aesthetic feels authentic.
Silverking Brewing's brewmaster has been a home brewer for several decades, and this experience is evident in the solid construction of these beers.
Silverking Brewing is a modest entry into the bay area brewing scene, but it's a perfect fit for downtown Tarpon Springs. Its Old Florida vibe plays well, due to the fact that it's housed in a century-old building with significant ties to Tarpon Springs' past. USA, CO: Big Thompson Brewery to launch in Loveland by the end of August
|
Two years of work and waiting are coming to fruition as the owners of Loveland's newest craft brewery, Big Thompson Brewery, located on 114 E. 15th St., create their first batches and prepare to open their doors, Loveland Reporter-Herald stated on July 12.
Big Thompson Brewery could welcome its first customers next month, said co-owner Kurt Biegel, although he doesn't have a firm date yet. The brewery already has approval to brew but is waiting for parking lot issues to be resolved so that it can get its certificate of occupancy from the city, Biegel said.
Biegel bought a 10-barrel, semi-automated brewing system, which is significantly different from the equipment he uses as a homebrewer, so it has taken a while to get accustomed to a new setup, he said.
“A 10-barrel brewhouse is larger than some craft breweries use when they start out,” Biegel said. The capacity to brew 20 kegs' worth at a time fits into his long-term business plan.
"We do want to be a production brewery and be able to package beer and sell beer out our back door ... in kegs or cans or bottles," Biegel said.

USA, MA: Notch Brewing Company to launch a new production brewery in Salem by March 2016
|
Brewer Chris Lohring, owner of Notch Brewing Company, has signed a lease for a production brewery in a space at 283 Derby St. in Salem, The Salem News reported on July 9.
Lohring said he is both excited and terrified to be opening Notch Brewing’s first permanent facility in Salem.
Lohring hopes to open by March 2016 after securing the necessary permitting and licensing and spending about six months building out the space. He expects to start small and produce about 2,000 barrels of craft beer in the first year.
“We are really very excited about it,” said Mayor Kim Driscoll. “We have been in communication with Chris to help identify locations and help him in any way we could.”
Lohring, an independent professional brewer formerly with the Tremont Brewery in Boston, started Notch Brewing in 2010.
“We’ve looked around Salem for a couple of years,” said Lohring. He eventually found a location at the back of a long building that is next to the South River in Salem.
“I think the consumer wants a little bit of romance,” Lohring said. “They want to see that it’s a fun place.”
Lohring said he signed a lease for 5,000 square feet on July 7.

USA, CA: Strand Brewing to double production capacity with a new brewery in Torrance
|
Torrance-based Strand Brewing is among the first to really help solidify Los Angeles’ now-booming beer scene. It’s just time for them to expand their production, Eater LA reported on July 9.
Strand Brewing plans a fancy a new 36,000 square foot facility, capable of handling their larger production needs while offering the kind of foot traffic that their taproom deserves.
As Strand Brewing has continued to climb, the need for more elbow room has only become more apparent. With the new brewing space, co-founder Rich Marcello says he should be able to jump to 9,000 barrels (they currently brew around 4,000 annually), and should be able to expand their footprint to northern California while canning many of their most popular beers.
The relocation will also put Strand Brewing close to some of Torrance’s most popular breweries.

USA, AL: Straight to Ale brewery to expand in Alabama
|
Straight to Ale brewery is poised to become the largest brewery in Alabama with its latest expansion at Campus No. 805 in west Huntsville, AL.com reported on July 9.
When complete, the project will span 40,000 square feet, double Straight to Ale's workforce and triple the brewery's production capacity at the former Stone Middle School campus near the intersection of Triana Boulevard, Clinton Avenue and Governors Drive in Huntsville.
Chad Emerson, chief executive officer of Downtown Huntsville Inc., said the mixed-use development is slated to become "one of the most interesting gateways into anywhere."
"It takes an innovative vision to take an old middle school and turn it into two breweries," Emerson said.
The 5-year-old brewery broke ground on July 9 at the 13-acre property in Huntsville.
Straight to Ale’s CEO and co-founder Dan Perry said they plan to reuse as many building materials from the old school as possible.
"We loved the idea of repurposing an old school into a brewery for the whole community," Perry said.

USA, TX: Holler Brewing LLC to open a brewing production in First Ward
|
Houston's First Ward will be the home of a new craft brewery, Holler Brewing LLC, the Houston Business Journal reported on July 13.
Husband and wife team John and Kathryn Holler plan to open a microbrewery called Holler Brewing LLC at 2206 Edwards St. in First Ward as soon as it can jump through the regulatory hoops required to come to market.
The brewery recently applied for a sales permit with the city of Houston and plans to file a permit with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission soon, John Holler, co-founder, told the Houston Business Journal.
“The timeline for opening the brewery is dependent on when the permit approvals go through,” John Holler said. “The initial concept for the brewery includes a tasting room and brewing production that would focus solely on the Houston market.”
"There's a certain appeal to a neighbourhood brewery," John Holler said. "There's a lot of competition out there when you get into the space of wide distribution. We'd rather focus on making really good beer in Houston."
“The company is still working out details in terms of funding and final design,” John Holler said. The two plan to run the brewery themselves once it opens.

Mexico: Craft beer scene has taken off

Rodrigo Escudero comes from thoroughbred Mexican beer stock, Coronas and Tecates coursing through his family’s veins.
From his immigrant great-great-grandfather on down, his forebears worked for the country’s two mega-breweries, and he started his own career as an intern with the world’s largest beer exporter, Grupo Modelo, maker of the college and beach-party favorite Corona.
“It was my dream job,” he said. “The smell. The people. The vibe.”
Now Escudero, 31, finds himself happier working with a single colleague in a cramped second-story office surrounded by samplers of oatmeal stouts, Citra hops pale ales and barleywines. His tiny company, La Patrona, is in the vanguard of a boozy renaissance that is challenging what it means to be Mexican beer. As the country’s middle class expands and regulators step in to encourage competition, the craft beer scene has taken off, The Washington Post reported on July 13.
“It’s really growing fast,” said Gilbert Nielsen, the owner of the craft brewery Calavera, on the outskirts of Mexico City. “We’re reaching a critical mass of customers, of people who like craft beer and will look for it.”

San Miguel Brewery’s Hong Kong-listed subsidiary will continue to develop and promote existing and new products to cushion the impact of the expiration and non-renewal of its distribution agreement with Anheuser-Busch, the world’s largest brewer, its parent company said.
“The company will continue its current efforts in developing and promoting products under its own principal brands as well as the new premium/craft brands being distributed by the company,” San Miguel Brewery Inc. said.
The Hong Kong-listed unit told its shareholders that in the first half of the year, it has incurred a consolidated net loss due to lower volume as a result of the termination of the agreement with Anheuser-Busch InBev China Sales Co. Ltd and Anheuser-Busch InBev International.
The company also attributed the loss to the fact that “the operating costs associated with the sales and marketing operations of the affected products are sustained, redirected and reinvested in the development of new premium/craft brands in the company’s portfolio. It is a key business strategy of the company to maintain a broad portfolio of brands.”
The end of the distribution agreement, which was announced last year, closes more than 15 years of partnership between San Miguel and Anheuser-Busch.

Kenya: Keroche Breweries resumes operations
|
Keroche Breweries, Naivasha has resumed operations following a raid and a week of disruptions in the crackdown against illicit brews, All Africa reported on July 10.
Trucks have not yet been deployed due to the hostile environment, said CEO Tabitha Karanja.
Karanja said Keroche lost millions of shillings despite having "top quality products" fully certified by various agencies.
"This company is fully supported by financiers and we have a target that we could not meet due to the ongoing crackdown," she told the press at her office on July 10.
She dismissed the term 'second generation brews' saying it was coined by competitors.
"The technology used 500 years ago to brew alcohol is the same one being used today. There is nothing like second generation brews," she said.
The CEO hit out at Naivasha MP John Kihagi for the company's woes and leading an attempt by hired goons to raid and destroy her property.
"We blame our losses on the MP, for misleading the youths, and unfair play from our competitors who have monopolised the trade for over 80 years," she said.
Keroche fully supported the countrywide crackdown on illicit brews, Karanja said, asking state agencies to pursue companies that do not meet standards.
