Brewery news USA & Germany: Missouri’s Urban Chestnut starts brewing at its small brewery in Hallertau, Bavaria
Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. has begun brewing beer at a facility in Bavaria, Germany that was acquired in January, STLtoday.com reported on June 3.

"It's always exciting to get something to the final stage of the process - especially when there's beer at the end," Urban Chestnut co-founder and brewmaster Florian Kuplent, a Bavarian native, said.

Urban Chestnut purchased the Bürgerbräu Wolnzach Brewery, which is located in Wolnzach, a town north of Munich, and rechristened it Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei.

Kuplent acknowledged that breaking into the German market has presented a much different challenge from entering the booming domestic market for craft beer.

"There are so many local breweries still," Kuplent said. "The variety in beer (brands) is pretty big. The variety of styles isn't."

The key, Kuplent said, is to explain to customers what Urban Chestnut Brewery is doing with each beer and why each tastes the way that it does. With that information, customers are open to try new styles.

"It does take that effort to explain it," he said.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing reports first quarter profits of C$31,000
Brick Brewing Co. Ltd. has reported first-quarter profits of C$31,000, a reversal from a loss of C$207,000 in the same period a year earlier, Waterloo Record reported on June 4.

The Kitchener-based beer maker said cost control, improved product mix and pricing contributed to improved margins.

The company said net revenue in the first quarter ended April 26 increased to C$7.7 million from C$7.5 million in the same period a year earlier.

Brick said sales volumes of its Waterloo premium brands grew 11.3 per cent compared to a year earlier, while sales volumes of its Laker brands increased 3.5 per cent.

Sales volumes of Seagram Coolers fell 26.7 per cent, a decline the company attributed to reduced listings at the LCBO and the timing of new product launches.

Brewery news USA, WI: Pearl Street Brewery to triple production by 2020
Pearl Street Brewery will receive a total of $150,000 from a La Crosse County development fund to help the company take advantage of the rapidly growing thirst nationwide for craft beers.

The La Crosse-based brewery intends to roughly triple its production in the next five years, going from more than 3,000 barrels to 10,000 by 2020, La Crosse Tribune reports on June 5.

The business also will expand its bottling operation so it can distribute its beer more widely in Wisconsin, Minnesota and perhaps other surrounding states, said Joe Katchever, founder and brewmaster of the business.

“In that same five-year period, industry analysts predict craft beer production in the U.S. will skyrocket from the current 11 percent of the overall volume to 20 percent,” Katchever said.

Because the products tend to command a higher price, craft beers now generate $19.6 billion of the overall $101.5 billion in U.S. beer sales, or about 19.3 percent of the revenue, according to the National Brewers Association.

The county’s Economic Development Fund Inc. will provide the money in two $75,000 instalments, with the second released no earlier than March 2016, after Pearl Street Brewery has demonstrated some growth, said Brian Fukuda, La Crosse County community development specialist.

“The county is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Amber Lantern Brewing Company becomes the first craft brew pub in Warsaw
Tommy Streamer is the owner of Amber Lantern Brewing Company located at 44 N. Main St., Warsaw. When Streamer was thinking about buying the then named Amber Lantern, he began thinking about making it a brew pub, Wyoming County Free Press reported on June 3.

“They’re delicious,” Streamer said. “Craft beer has allowed people to explore new beer and styles. I have an extensive home-brewing system at home; brewing has been my passion for about 10 years,” said Streamer.

Streamer is going to be using an all-grain brewing process. There is an extract that can be used, but the pub owner doesn’t want to go that route. Instead, ALBC is going to be using 95 percent local products from area farms to craft their beer.

“The only thing that didn’t come from New York was the yeast and couple ounces of hops,” Streamer said. “The grains come from Ted and Patty Hawley, Batavia. Most of our hops came from Fillmore and Kendell. It’s going to have a WNY flavour. The malt that Ted is making right now is brilliant; it has a nice nutty sweetness to it.”

“It’s exciting,” said former Amber Lantern owner Ron (Smitty) Smith. “I can't remember when there was craft ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Manitoulin Brewing to launch in Northern Ontario this month
Manitoulin Brewing is getting set to serve up its first beer on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario later this month, Canadian Beer News reported on June 3.

Manitoulin Brewing is being launched by local residents and long-time friends Blair Hagman and Nishin Meawasige. They will brew on a small system that produces roughly 190 litres per batch.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Ravens, BNA & Red Arrow Brewing Companies officially open in British Columbia
In what may be a new record for the province, three new craft breweries have turned on their taps in British Columbia in the last five days, Canadian Beer News reported on June 2.

As noted on the Craft Beer Revolution Twitter feed, Ravens Brewing was the first of the trio to open on May 29 in Abbotsford.

BNA Brewing followed with a grand opening on June 1, in downtown Kelowna.

Last but not least, Red Arrow Brewing launched on June 2, in Duncan.

Brewery news Canada, MB: PEG Beer Co. and Barn Hammer Brewing to open in Winnipeg in December
PEG Beer Co. and Barn Hammer Breweries are both aiming to open their doors to Winnipeg beer drinkers in December, Canadian Beer News reported on June 2.

PEG Beer Co. is being launched by Nicole Barry, the co-founder of Half Pints Brewing who left that company last year. Planned to be a brewpub with a full service restaurant, it will be located at 125 Pacific Avenue, Winnipeg.

Barry is hoping for a December 1 opening.

“We’ll have just under 7,000 square feet, so it’s enough space to have a pretty decent-sized brewery. It’s a beautiful building. The last time I was in the building, I was probably 15 years old - and it really looks the same in a lot of ways, and we’re trying to keep the beautiful building intact as much as possible.”

Planning to open around the same time is Barn Hammer Brewing, founded by Tyler Birch, the co-owner of a local fence-making company. Inspired by his own homebrewing experiments, Birch is planning to invest $750,000 into launching the brewery on 595 Wall Street, Winnipeg.

As for the name, Birch explains it as follows: “Our cabin (at Lee River) used to be an old farmhouse and it had a barn behind it. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: High Road Brewing launches in Toronto, Ontario
Two veterans of Ontario’s brewing industry have announced the launch of a new project that has just released its debut beer, Canadian beer news reported on May 29.

High Road Brewing is a partnership between Curtis Bentley and Rob Doyle, two brewers who had worked at different Ontario breweries - Bentley at King Brewery, and Doyle at Sleeman - before they met in 2007 while enrolled in the Masters Brewing & Distilling program at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Upon completion of the program, Doyle returned to Ontario to work for Magnotta Brewery and later Mill Street Brewery, while Bentley worked with a small brewery in New Zealand before coming back to Canada and also ending up at Mill Street, Toronto. After working there together for several years, the duo decided to form their own brewing company, and High Road was born.

High Road is currently brewing under contract on a 5 barrel system at Niagara College Brewery, where Doyle has held a position as teaching brewer since leaving Mill Street, Toronto, last year. This has allowed the pair to produce enough beer to enter the Ontario market, although opening their own facility is something they hope to do as soon as it’s feasible.

Brewery news USA, WA: Subdued Brewing Company to open in Bellingham
A new brewery, Subdued Brewing Company, is slated for the heart of Bellingham’s hip Columbia neighbourhood and Fountain District. Owners Dave Morales and Chris McClanahan have recently came one step closer toward construction - their public notice meeting for a conditional use permit received an enthusiastic stamp of approval, whatcomtalk.com reported on June 4.

Subdued Brewing Co.’s owners have a lot of work ahead of them, but have a solid vision in place. “While we don’t want to commit to a specific target date, we hope to be pouring our beers a year from now,” says Chris.

Dave and Chris are self-described Belgian beer junkies. But Subdued has set its sights on being just different enough from the other Bellingham breweries. “There will be some Belgian offerings as well, with our own twist to them.”

Chris and Dave come to their endeavour with a great deal of combined experience. Chris began brewing around 1993 and has home-brewed over 400 batches since then. Dave started brewing in 1991 and has made beer in such well-known place as Boundary Bay Brewery, Pyramid Brewing, and Pike Place Brewery. They also are both nationally certified and active beer judges.

Brewery news USA, WA: Hellbent Brewing Company to officially open on June 13 in Lake City
Lake City's Hellbent Brewing Company opened softly last weekend, across from the Lake City Fred Meyer, in a 7,500-foot former manufacturing plant, Eater reported on June 3.

The company was established by partners Brian Young, Jack Guinn, Chris Giles, and Randy Embernate.

Hellbent Brewing’s official grand opening is scheduled for June 13.

Brewery news USA, MI: Lansing Brewing Company to open this fall
Lansing Brewing Company reopens after a 100 year hiatus, Capital Gains reported on June 3. "This is just another step in making this city a fantastic place to live," says Sam Short, consultant with the Lansing Brewing Company. Sam Short is part of a team led by the Gillespie Group that works to bring the only full-production craft brewery and distillery to St. Lansing. Lansing Brewing Company will consist of a full-scale production facility. The original Lansing Brewing Company operated from 1898 to 1914, and sat on the corner of Turner and Clinton, St. Lansing. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1971. The new Lansing Brewing Company will occupy a renovated tool and die facility at 518 E. Shiawassee Street, St. Lansing. The $1.5 million renovation is expected to be completed by the end of summer, with a public opening slated for fall. Jennifer Gillespie is the owner of the brewery. "We haven't had our own brewery for years, despite the fact that tons of other cities have been exploding with breweries," Sam Short says. "This place will represent St. Lansing as a working city - a place where the working guy or woman can come and enjoy ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Valcour Brewing Company to postpone opening to mid-September
Work to transform the Old Stone Barracks in Plattsburgh into the Valcour Brewing Company moved from deconstruction to reconstruction this week. The owners say they got their hands on a building permit on May 29, so changes are sure to be fast over the next few months, My Champlain Valley FOX44 & ABC22 reported on June 3.

Valcour Brewing Company’s co-owner Terry Schmaltz says that not everything has gone as planned, and the timeline has been pushed back.

“We were hoping July but you know, everything takes time so, some things you can control, some things you can't,” said Schmaltz.

One of the things he can't control, he says, is licensing. The last item on his list is his state alcohol license.

But Schmaltz says, he needs to send in pictures of the completed brewery before he can get it. “Then the lag time between having that finished, taking the photographs, getting it sent into the state, how long will that take? I can't control that,” he said.

So he's shooting for a mid-September opening. Valcour Brewing will join just 2 other breweries in Clinton County, according to the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets.

“We immediately knew this was the spot,” said head brewer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: River Rouge Brew Co. opens in Royal Oak
Brewer Edward Stencel's eclectic background and Michigan heritage have made a stamp on his new River Rouge Brewing Company, which opened three weeks ago in Royal Oak, The Detroit News reported on June 3.

The brewery is named after the Michigan city where his grandfather moved after immigrating from Poland in the early 1910s. Stencel went to college in Britain where he learned to enjoy the brown ales made there.

In the fall of 2013 he started making plans with his brother, Chip Stencel, wife Martha Stencel and partner Joanne Engwright to open the River Rouge Brewery, which employs a three-and-a-half barrel system.

"My wife tells me I went from Armani to Carhartt," jokes Stencel, referring to his transition from businessman to beer maker.

For his brewing education, Stencel studied under Alex Van Horne, owner and head brewer of San Diego's Intergalactic Brewing Company (Stencel proudly wears this brewery's patch on his work shirt alongside the River Rouge Brewery logo).

Brewery news Australia: Consumption of low carb beer stabilizes in Australia
Consumption of low carb beer has stabilised in Australia and the people who favour it are not who you may expect, according to new research cited by Australian Brews News.

When the low-carb craze reached its peak in September 2011, almost 11 per cent of Australia’s adult population (or 1,853,000 people) were drinking it in an average four weeks, up from 1.6 per cent in June 2006.

The trend has since stabilised, with the latest findings from Roy Morgan Research revealing that low-carb beer is now consumed by 8.5 per cent of Australians.

However, the total proportion of Australians drinking beer has steadily declined over the same period from 42.3 per cent to 36.5 per cent. Low-carb beer consumers now comprise almost one quarter of people drinking beer in an average four weeks — well up on June 2006, when they accounted for just three per cent of the country’s total beer drinkers.

Only one quarter of low-carb beer drinkers are women (about average for beer drinking in general), and men aged under 35 years easily outnumber those aged 50+ (33 per cent vs 21 per cent of total low-carb beer drinkers respectively), Roy Morgan found.

And the research found low-carb beer drinkers are actually ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Demand for canned beer registers rapid increase
Twenty years ago no self-respecting beer drinker in the Czech Republic would be seen dead swigging beer from a can. There was a widespread perception that bottled beer is superior and beer in cans loses its quality, tasting flat and acquiring a metallic tang. That is fast changing and breweries are expanding their packaging capacities to meet growing demand for canned beer, Radio Praha reported on June 4.

While Czechs, who pride themselves on making the best beer in the world, are still resisting the canned beer revolution abroad, the change in consumer demand is becoming increasingly evident. While bottled beer still has the lion’s share of the market, Czechs are increasingly throwing canned beer into their shopping carts. One reason behind the increasing demand for canned beer is a whole new generation for whom cans are perfectly normal packaging. Another is that more and more consumers are buying canned beer for practical reasons – they are light, unbreakable, easy to open and ideal to take on trips. And thirdly, they are easily disposed of, as compared to returnable glass bottles which you need to wash out and take back to the store.

While environmentalists are far from happy about the growing ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Russia approves new wheat export tax as from July 1
Russia approved the launch of a new wheat export tax from July 1, which traders say could threaten profits on advance contracts for the new crop if the rouble weakens in coming months, Reuters reported on May 29.

Russia's government said on May 29 that the new tax was intended to stop exports surging if the rouble drops steeply. The rouble fell sharply against the dollar in 2014, fuelling grain exports, and is yet to fully recover.

The new tax is set at 50 percent of the customs price per tonne minus 5,500 roubles ($105), but not less than 50 roubles per tonne, the government said in a statement.

"This level of export tax, apart from fiscal function, will have a regulatory impact depending on the change in global prices," the government said.

The profitability of already concluded forward contracts for the new marketing year, which starts on July 1, is now at risk because exporters do not know what the rouble rate will be at the moment of supply, several traders said.

"I am ready to pay the tax but I want to know how much I will pay," one trader said. The tax may make already concluded contracts loss-making if the dollar strengthens ...More info on site

Brewery news Taiwan: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation reportedly spent NT$65 million on recalling 3.7 million beer bottles and reprinting labels
The state-run Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation has reportedly spent NT$65 million on recalling 3.7 million beer bottles and reprinting labels ahead of a new government regulations on warning labels, The China Post reported on June 5.

On Jan. 5, the tobacco and liquor division at Finance Ministry's National Treasury Administration updated its regulations on labels of alcoholic beverages. The regulations become effective in July.

The rules stipulate that the font size of each character in the health warning must exceed 0.265 centimetres in height and width.

In addition, the warning "minors should not consume alcohol" should be replaced with "don't drink and drive," according to the regulations.

Ahead of July, TTL deployed around 200 35-ton trucks that recycled 3,700,000 beer bottles from all around Taiwan. The bottles were transported to a manufacturer in Maoli County for recycling.

A member of the public said the recall was a waste of money, water, electricity and other resources. Asked to identify the differences between the old and new beer bottles, two consumers were unable to do so immediately, according to the United Evening News.

Hsu An-hsuan, chairman of TTL, admitted that there was a loss in profit but the measures were taken to adhere to the government's updated ...More info on site
