Brewery news Canada: SABMiller to launch Miller Lite nationwide next week
SABMiller PLC will mark on Monday, May 11 Miller Lite’s first nationwide launch in Canada with an ad campaign which will be using the beer’s history to promote it, The Globe and Mail reported.

“Mad Men correctly recounts Miller Lite as the pioneer of the light-beer segment,” said Stewart Cowan, vice-president of marketing at SABMiller Canada.

The ads, which will be in heavy rotation on television throughout the summer, tout the brand as “the light beer that invented light beer,” and will refer to its brewing heritage dating back to 1973.

Canadian consumers have high brand awareness of Miller Lite, SABMiller said, thanks to Canada’s proximity to the United States, where it has been sold for years. The beer was only available with limited marketing in Ontario and Newfoundland, and has not been sold at all here since 2010.

Until now, all of SABMiller’s products – including Miller Genuine Draft, Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch – were sold through a partnership with Molson Coors Canada. That partnership ended last October after a lengthy legal dispute and SABMiller opened its own Canadian offices this year.

“Canadian consumers are world-renowned beer lovers,” said Paul Verdu, managing director for Canada.

That may be true, but it’s an awkward time ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reconfirms 2015 guidance and outlines expenditure plans to support long-term strategy
Craft Brew Alliance, a leading US craft brewing company, announced on April 27 that it is reconfirming 2015 full year guidance and providing additional details of its capital expenditure plans for 2015 and 2016, which expand on the company’s recently announced investment projects.

CBA recently announced two major brewery expansions in Hawaii and Oregon, as well as a new brewpub in Seattle. The planned investments will increase CBA’s annual brewing capacity by 300,000 barrels (BBLs) in 2017, while supporting the company’s long-term gross margin goals.

“These investments, reflected in our two-year capital expenditure plan, represent the next deliberate step towards achieving continued topline growth, reinforcing our connection to our home markets, and delivering on our 2017 gross margin target of 35%, while increasing long-term shareholder value.”

The expansion in the West reflects CBA’s commitment to growing and investing in its brands’ home markets through providing meaningful scale and flexibility to meet increasing consumer demand. Widmer Brothers Brewing, headquartered in Portland, Ore., will add an additional 200,000 BBLs to its existing brewery, while Kona Brewing, headquartered in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, will build a new state-of-the-art 100,000 BBL brewery in its home market of Hawaii. The new Redhook Brewery brewpub will be located in one ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Temple is home to a brand new BJ's brewery.
BJ's corporation has opened a brewery to brew the beers for all of its restaurants in Texas, but it will also be open starting next month to area residents who want to take tours, sample the beer, and buy kegs, kwtx.com reported on May 7.

"A craft brewery in the middle of downtown; it has a lot of character," said Charley Ayres, vice president of the Temple Economic Development Corporation.

It has been open for a couple weeks now, brewing barrels of beer for the chains 30-plus restaurants in Texas.

"They've gotten to a certain point of growth that they were brewing their beer on the West Coast and shipping it to their restaurants here. So, it got to a point that they had to be in closer proximity," said Ayres.

"We are excited to be the first brewery in Temple. I can sense that there is a lot of excitement in the air everywhere I go. I have a BJ's shirt and I get asked do you work for the brewery. People ask when we are going to be open," said Alex Puchner, the senior vice president of brewing operations for BJ's Restaurants.

Later this year, workers will start canning and bottling BJ's beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Austin company purchases Lone Star Brewery
The old Lone Star Brewery site has been sold to AquaLand Development, the Austin real estate company confirmed on May 5. The sale price was not disclosed.

AquaLand wants to turn the site into a mixed-use development that could include a microbrewery, multifamily housing, a theatre, music venues, restaurants, a farmers market, retail, offices and parks, according to a news release.

“It’s going to be more targeted to the south part of town,” AquaLand Vice President Mark Evans said. “We’re going to do everything we can to preserve the historical features … there’s a lot of folks who have been in South San Antonio for a long time, and we’re listening to their wants and needs. So, there’s no levelling of buildings that’s going to happen here.”

AquaLand has purchased roughly half of the 60 acres from the Newell family, with an option to purchase the other half at a later date. The initial purchase includes the old brewery, cannery building and the grind shop.

Brewery news USA, CA: Lompoc City Council approves Solvang Brewing Company loan
The former Beattie Ford Motors dealership at the Lompoc’s corner of H Street and Chestnut, has sat vacant for nearly 20 years, reported Keyt on May 6.

The Lompoc City Council gave unanimous approval to a $200,000 loan to the owners of the Solvang Brewing Company who've already received approval to build a craft brewery, tap room and restaurant at the former car dealership site.

The loan is to help the owners start buying equipment for the project that's expected to break ground this summer.

"All the resources that were really necessary for our growth were available to us here", says Solving Brewing Company co-owner Stephen Renfrow. "Not only that but we also got a lot of support here locally as well to come out here."

Renfrow has operated his popular and successful brewery and restaurant on Highway 246 in Solvang since 2010 and says he's been looking for a larger location to expand his craft beer production to include bottling and distribution.

"I just felt that had a lot of character," Refrow says about the former car dealership location. "I felt like life could breathe back into the building."

The 8 year, $200,000 loan to Renfrow carries a 4% interest rate and is backed by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Jacksonville welcomes two new breweries: J'Ville Craft Brewery and Liftline Brewing
Honora Winery & Vineyard winemaker Janice Stuart has a background in plant science, so vineyard management was a natural professional fit for her. But she was always a beer girl at heart. And over the past year, she's been hard at work bringing J'Ville Brewery - named for its Jacksonville, Vt., location - from concept to fruition, Vermont’s Independent Voice reported on May 6.

When winery owner Patricia Farrington proposed opening a brewery on the property, Stuart loved the idea. She started trekking to Winooski to brew with Brian Eckert at Four Quarters Brewing, who became a close friend and mentor, and planted 180 hops seedlings to flavour her brews.

This past St. Patrick's Day, the brewery's licensing went through. "We have been brewing like maniacs since then," Stuart says. She began offering weekend tastings on April 18 and will continue to do so until J'Ville Brewery's official debut during the Vermont Chocolate Festival at the Windham County venue on Memorial Day - May 25.

At the opposite end of the state, 26-year-old Sheldon native Matt Grant has been working on his brewery for five years. This weekend, he'll open the doors to Liftline Brewing and offer samples and growler fills of First ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Commercial brewing returns to Olean
A former brewery turned lumber storage facility, and later a kitchen and bath center, is getting back to its original purpose. It’s a 15-barrel brew house boasting giant, stainless steel fermenters, storage tanks and miles of hoses, Olean Times Herald reported on May 7.

But for Gregg Piechota, Jaye Beattie and Nicholas Bohdanowycz, opening Four Mile Brewing on East Greene Street is the realization of a dream.

“It’s a huge sigh of relief,” Piechota, who is also head brewer, said. “It’s been a long road to finally get here and be open. We got a lot of support from the community and local government. We couldn’t have done this without them.”

“It still feels very surreal,” Beattie said. “We feel very blessed that we can finally share our passion for craft beer with the community and we hope everyone will enjoy our beer as much as we do.”

“We’re all very proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Bohdanowycz said. “This has been a tremendous experience and was a very ambitious process.”

Four Mile Brewing officially opens to the public on May 7.

“It was fantastic,” Beattie added. “To see everyone there enjoying our product was very touching.”

“For me, I was close ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Copper Point Brewing to debut on May 11 in Boynton Beach
Copper Point Brewing’s opening in Boynton Beach auspiciously coincides with the start of American Craft Beer Week, Palm Beach Post reports on May 7.

It has been more than five years since Matt Cox left Big Bear Brewing, a brew pub in Coral Springs where he won one of Florida’s first gold medals in brewing at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. Now, Cox, 39, gets to own and run a brewery for the first time.

Copper Point is the seventh full-fledged brewery in Palm Beach County, Florida and the third to open this year.

Cox met investor and beer lover Al Lettera. Together, they scouted South Florida sites until the city of Boynton Beach opened their arms to them.

The city’s economic development department helped them apply for three grants - including a federal job-creating grant - totalling $127,000.

It wasn’t without its share of headaches, and not just the federal grant that took a year to be approved. They were sued by Tampa’s Coppertail Brewing, who alleged their original name, Coppertop, would cause confusion.

But the brewery retains the original spirit, if not the name. It was inspired by Cox’s wife, Laura, a redhead whom he has known since they were at Olympic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI, OH & WI: Saugatuck Brewing expands in Ohio and Wisconsin
A West Michigan craft brewery plans to expand its reach in two Great Lakes states, MiBiz reported on May 7.

Saugatuck Brewing Co. said on May 6 that it has signed deals with three Ohio-based distributors and one Wisconsin-based distributor to fully cover both states with its Michigan-made craft beer.

In Ohio, the Saugatuck-based brewery is working with Beerco/City Beverage, Maple City Ice and Premium Beverage. It had been in the Cleveland and Toledo markets since May of last year.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, the brewery signed with Beechwood Sales and Service, which will service the whole state.

“As our production capacity continues to grow, we are very pleased to be systematically moving into new markets and bringing our beer to the increasingly savvy craft beer drinker,” President and CEO Ric Gillette said in a statement.

Brewery news USA, FL: St. Johns County board approves Ancient City Brewing at the Mile Marker Brewing’s location
The St. Johns County Planning and Zoning Board meeting on May 7 was a victory for beer, St. Augustine Record reported on May 7.

Among the few agenda items for the meeting was a request for a special-use permit by Ancient City Brewing Co. at the same location of former microbrewery Mile Marker Brewing.

In other words, it was a nearly identical business seeking to use the same spot at 3420 Agricultural Center Drive, Saint Augustine for a nearly identical purpose. The board passed the measure 7-0 with little discussion.

“It was a necessity to get a special-use permit,” said co-owner Dylan Rumrell, who was not at the meeting. “We’re just happy to be back as the first brewery in St. Augustine. We’re excited for the opportunity to serve St. Johns County and the rest of country.”

Rumrell was not affiliated with the Mile Marker Company, which closed last year. His partner in the business is Greg Tuttle.

“We brought our own touches to it,” Rumrell said. “We’ll be making sure we serve the best beer possible.”

The new facility is expected to open May 15 with other craft beers. The owners are hoping to receive their brewing license from the federal government in June.

Brewery news USA, IN: Goshen Brewing Co. plans to open before the week of May 18
Goshen Brewing Co. plans to have its doors open for May 25 – the Memorial Day weekend, Flavor574 reported on May 6.

“We’ve had a lot of people helping,” owner Jesse Sensenig said, noting that family, friends and employees are all working together.

Potential customers and curious onlookers are stopping in at 315 W. Washington St., Goshen, daily to check on progress.

Jesse and his wife Amanda Sensenig are working alongside chef Jesse Shoemaker, general manager Jason Heatwole and others to get ready.

Sensenig, the head brewer, already has nine batches fermenting, including coffee brown, pale ale, kolsch, hoppy wheat and several scotch ales.

About 20 employees will be on staff when the family-friendly brewpub opens.

Brewery news USA, WA: Structures Brewing to open in Bellingham
It appears a new brewery is making plans to open in Bellingham.

Structures Brewing, announced on its Facebook page plans to try and get open around January 2016. In the Facebook message, it appears the new owners are big fans of the existing breweries and want to be a part of this brewing community, Bellingham Herald reported on May 6.

It’s another piece of what is already an active year for new Bellingham brewery openings. Stones Throw Brewery is expected to open later this summer, while Kulshan Brewing is close to opening its second location.

Brewery news USA, MI & CO: Detroit's Atwater Brewery expands in Colorado
On May 5, the Detroit-based brewery announced a partnership with Elite Brands that will bring a handful of their brews to the entire state of Colorado, mlive reported the same day.

According to a release, Atwater's flagship Vanilla Java Porter, Dirty Blonde and Hop-A-Peel IPA rolled into Colorado in March.

“We are so excited to bring the spirit of Detroit beer to our friends in the great state of Colorado," Atwater Brewing President Mark Rieth said in a release. "We've been focused on making great craft lagers and ales with the perfect amount of Detroit swagger for years and are truly excited to share our vision with beer lovers in Colorado."

Atwater was part of the first wave of Detroit breweries. They opened in 1997, but have exploded in recent years.

According to Reith, only a couple breweries have expanded west past Mississippi.

"...we're committed to getting our beer to where people want it," he said. "That's what is driving our growth strategy."

From their spot at 237 Joseph Campau Ave. near the Detroit riverfront, Atwater produced over 40,000 barrels of craft beer in 2014. That year the brewery saw sales increase by 68 percent.

In late January, the brewer announced they'd be launching in Ontario, Canada ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Lansing Brewing Company to open in the fall
The Lansing Brewing Company closed its doors more than a century ago, but the name and at least one of its recipes will grace a full-production craft brewery and distillery slated to open in the fall, Lansing State Journal reported on May 6.

"Compared to other cities we are woefully behind as far as the number of microbreweries," said consultant Sam Short. "The major difference with Lansing Brewing Company is it will be the first full-production microbrewery in the city of Lansing and greater Lansing area since it originally closed its doors."

The original Lansing Brewing Company was organized in 1898.

Its president and manager, Lawrence Price, was a prominent businessman, police chief, city councilman and one of the pioneers of the city's auto industry.

And, from a building on the northeast corner of Turner and Clinton streets, he produced the beer that "once made Lansing famous," according to a 1934 article in the State Journal. Amber Cream was the signature brew.

Occupied by Kish Industries and Allied Van Lines in 1971, Lansing Brewing Company was destroyed in that year's Turner Street fire. This site is now occupied by On the Grand Condominiums.

Lansing Brewing Company closed in 1914, a victim of local prohibition. The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Bond Brothers Beer Company to open brewery in downtown Cary, North Carolina
The recently formed Bond Brothers Beer Company is expected to sell beer from the tap at 202 E. Cedar St. - off East Chatham Street, Cary - next spring, News & Observer reported on May 6.

A group of local home brewers has partnered with a Cary developer to open a bar and brewery in downtown Cary. They hope to open their first commercial operation off East Chatham Street in spring 2016.

Northwoods Associates LP is leasing and renovating the space, most recently used as a carpet distribution warehouse, as part of a $5 million project known as Midtown Square. The project, announced in February, also includes a new 25,000-square-foot office building next door.

The Bond Brothers Beer Company space will include a 4,600-square-foot brewing area; a 2,300-square-foot tap room; and 3,000 square feet of outdoor space for a beer garden.

Bond Brothers Beer Company was founded by the twin brothers Jay Bond and Jeremy Bond as well as Andy Schnitzer and Whit Baker. Schnitzer said the group hopes to begin renovation efforts this summer and open for business next spring.

While the brewery is the first commercial beer venture for the Bond brothers, they’re no strangers to the local brewing scene.
