The hidden treasures of hop bracts

ABSTRACT
We know we don't know everything about hops, but we're always discovering new things! Japanese researchers have used a novel separation technique using a sequential liquid chromatography (LC) method in the following steps: (1) highspeed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC); (2) hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using an amide column; and reversed-phase (RP) LC using a (3) octadecylsily (ODS) or (4) phenyl column. The comprehensive separation and structural analyses identified four compounds for the first time in plants, and 20 compounds that have not been reported from hops were also identified. Most of the compounds were hydrophilic glycosylated and/or esterified analogues of abscisic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, lignans, hydroxybenzoic acids, or carotenoids. In addition, large amounts of highly oligomeric proanthocyanidins were found in the hop bract extract. Who knows, maybe these compounds will become physiologically important in the future!

Malt news USA: Rahr Corporation announces new Rahr Malting president
Rahr Corporation announced on November 20 that Ron Johnson has been promoted to president of its subsidiary Rahr Malting Co., one of North America’s leading malting companies. Johnson has worked for Rahr Malting for more than 28 years.

During his career with Rahr Malting, Johnson has moved up the commercial ranks of the business from his start as a barley buyer to managing sales, supply chain, logistics, and risk management activities. As president, he will have administrative as well as profit and loss responsibility for the entire malting business, including facilities in Shakopee, Minnesota; Taft, North Dakota; and Alberta, Canada.

“Ron has been an integral part of Rahr Malting’s success and growth over the years,” said William Rahr, president and chief executive officer of Rahr Corporation. “We believe Rahr Malting is well-positioned for further growth, and Ron is the perfect person to pursue new strategies and fulfill that potential.”

Johnson fills the vacancy left by William Rahr, who assumed his present role at Rahr Corporation on November 1, 2014.

Rahr Malting Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rahr Corporation, a family owned business founded in 1847 that supplies malt and other ingredients to the brewing, wine, distilling and food industries in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Anheuser-Busch InBev cuts jobs in U.S.
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV confirmed it is cutting jobs and consolidating its sales division in the U.S. after the world's largest brewer posted weak third-quarter results in its largest market, marketwatch.com reported on November, 19.

AB InBev declined to specify how many employees are being laid off. The job cuts affect salaried employees in divisions ranging from marketing and procurement to sales and brewery operations, according to people familiar with the matter. One person estimated hundreds of jobs could be eliminated.

The brewer has about 15,000 employees in the U.S., where sales volumes of key brands like Budweiser and Bud Light have been declining for years. The company reported last month that earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the U.S. fell 2.1% in the first nine months of 2014.

Anheuser-Busch Vice President, People Jim Brickey said in a statement that the layoffs follow a "detailed business review" and reductions "were minimized as much as possible." He added, "These are always difficult decisions, but are important in evolving our business and improving our competitiveness."

As part of the review, the company decided to consolidate its sales force. It is reducing the total number of sales regions it covers from eight to seven. The consolidation ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio legislators make last minute push on Beer Bill
Ohio legislators are making a last minute push behind a bill that, if passed, would nearly double the legal ABV limit for beer sold in the state, according to WCPO Cincinnati, brewbound.com reported on November, 18.

As written, House Bill 391 would allow for the sale of beer that clocks in at 21 percent ABV in the state, up from the currently imposed cap of 12 percent.

The bill, however, must pass through the General Assembly by the end of the week or face being taken off the table until next legislative session. Considering the bill requires another hearing in the House before it can be passed along to the Senate, at least one lawmaker doesn’t believe there’s enough time to get it passed this time around.

Proponents of the bill, which has 20 co-sponsors from both parties, have described it as an economic development spark, as brewers in Ohio would no longer be forced to take their more alcoholic beers outside of state lines for sale. Though the bill would immediately allow for brewers in the state to start selling higher-ABV offerings, manufacturers from outside of Ohio could market theirs in the state a year later.

“Many of us believe it’s a way ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: New Buffalo Brewing Co. to build its own production facility
New Buffalo Brewing Co., which opened in 2011 and sold its first beer last year, is looking to build its own production facility, bizjournals.com reported on November, 19.

Owner Bill Campbell founded New Buffalo Brewing Co. while serving in the U.S. Air Force from 2008 to 2012. He estimates that he's spent about $250,000 on the company, which employs three and makes beers with the names Big Fish Bitters, Iron Road IPA and Saloon Boss Brown.

To get his Clarence-based business off the ground, Campbell took advantage of many U.S. Small Business Administration free programs and services available to military veterans and those wanting to start or grow their business.

He obtained an SBA-guaranteed loan through Evans Bank that allowed his company to purchase additional equipment and provided him with working capital. The SBA also provided him the support and technical assistance needed.

He also worked with the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State College to develop his business plan.

New Buffalo Brewing's beers are distributed through Try-It Distributing Co., and can be found in area grocery stores, bars and restaurants, which has attracted a growing list of new customers.

As a result, Campbell would like to build his own production facility closer to home. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Rentsch Brewery to open in Georgetown next year
Rentsch Brewery, a father-and-son operation, is opening early next year in Georgetown, austin360.com reported on November, 20

Andrew Rentschler, the 24-year-old brewmaster of Rentsch, doesn’t have a set date for his brewery opening either, although he does know that it’ll be sometime in February, once all the TABC permitting guidelines have been met.

It’s a month he can’t wait for — and neither can the rest of the town. “Everyone keeps asking, ‘How soon?’” Rentschler said. “We’ve had a few people come over and try our sample batches, and everything I’ve heard has been positive.”

He and his father, David Rentschler, decided to open up a brewery together after dabbling in homebrewing. Their hobby wasn’t anything serious until David went to visit his son, at the time a Texas Tech student studying abroad in Salzburg and Berlin, in Europe.

“(During my time in Germany) I had a lot of German-style beers at a lot of different bars and beer gardens, and I fell in love with those kinds of beers,” Andrew Rentschler said, noting that he had never been a fan of light macro beer. “My dad came to Europe at one point, and while we were sitting at this little café overlooking the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Canada: Ninkasi Brewing selects new partner for distribution in Canada
Ninkasi Brewing has selected Copper & Theory Artisan Beer Supply as its new partner for distribution in Canada, The Drinks Business Review reported on November, 17.

Through the new partnership, Copper & Theory Artisan Beer Supply will distribute Ninkasi's products across the western province of Alberta.

Ninkasi products such as Total Domination IPA, Believer Double Red, and Oatis Oatmeal Stout will be available on draft and in bottles.

Copper & Theory Artisan Beer Supply founder Adam Henderson said: "Alberta is a fast growing market for craft beer and it is just about to realize its potential.

"Albertans have an incredible enthusiasm for beer right now, so we're very excited to expand our partnership with Ninkasi and bring its great beer into the province."

Earlier in February 2013, Ninkasi partnered with Copper and Theory for distribution in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Brewery news USA, CO: Ratio Beerworks to open in River North in 2015
The owners of Ratio Beerworks had stopped looking for space in River North - a district that already boasts seven breweries with at least three more on the way - when they heard about the 5,500-square-foot warehouse that Mile High Spirits was leaving behind after finding newer digs downtown, westword.com reported on November, 17.

"It was an A-plus for us - the right size with soaring ceilings and a huge side yard," says former Wynkoop and AC Golden brewer Jason zumBrunnen, who plans to open Ratio with partners Zach Lowery and Scott Kaplan.

When it opens, Ratio will have a twenty-barrel production brewing system and a 1,500-square-foot taproom. It will have an initial brewing capacity of 2,000 barrels per year, with possibilities for expansion. The plan is to make enough beer to consistently supply the taproom along with local restaurants that, more and more, are serving local craft brews.

There are also plans to package: zumBrunnen says Ratio will start by bottling barrel-aged beers, including some wild or sour ales, but there is room in the facility for a canning line down the road.

Located just a block from Our Mutual Friend and two blocks from Epic Brewing, Ratio will be in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Urban Moose Brewing groundbreaking delayed until spring
Plans to bring a new brewery to Sauk Rapids have been delayed. But, the owner of Urban Moose Brewing says the project is still moving forward, wjon.com reported on November, 17.

Construction of the Urban Moose Brewing building was supposed to have been well underway by now. However, owner Roy Dodds says the project has run into some delays due to the soil conditions. He says they’re now expecting to break ground in the spring, with a seven month construction process, and be open by the fall of next year.

The Sauk Rapids HRA owns the land. Dodds says he hasn’t closed on the property yet, but he still has an agreement to buy it from the city. Sauk Rapids Planning Director Todd Schultz says at some point the city will have to extend some timelines on their end, but they’re not concerned about it. Schultz says sometimes delays are just part of development projects.

Dodds owns Flying Pig Pizza in downtown Sauk Rapids, which he says he’ll be moving into the new 9,000 square foot building when it’s complete.

Brewery news USA, MA & NH: Newburyport Brewing expands product presence to New Hampshire
Newburyport Brewing has expanded its product presence to New Hampshire, under a partnership with New Hampshire Craft Alliance, The Drinks Business Review reported on November, 18.

A distribution agreement to this effect was signed between Newburyport Brewing and New Hampshire Craft Alliance, which is a wholesaler network comprising New Hampshire Distributors, Bellavance Beverage Company, White Mountain Distributors, and Clarke Distributors.

As per the agreed terms, New Hampshire Craft Alliance will distribute the complete range of Newburyport Brewing's draught and canned craft beers throughout New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Craft Alliance craft brand manager Sean Jansen said: "With their close proximity to New Hampshire, Newburyport Brewing has already created a buzz in the Southern New Hampshire community.

"Consumers are looking for quality and consistency, which Newburyport Brewing brings to the table with Green Head IPA, Plum Island Belgian White and Newburyport Pale Ale. Plus, their canned craft beers are a perfect fit for New Hampshire's outdoor adventure lifestyle."

Newburyport Brewing CEO and co-founder Chris Webb said: "The New Hampshire Craft Alliance is a dynamic and educated team of distributors and we are pleased that they will represent our products."

Brewery news USA, MD: DuClaw Brewing Company expands its operations
DuClaw Brewing Company —which was founded in 1996 and is currently Maryland’s third-largest brewery—is rising up the ranks, as it moved from a small facility in its Bel Air hometown to a 600,000-square-foot facility in Rosedale, baltimoremagazine.com reported on November, 20.

The new space is about six-times larger than its original and features a custom-engineered brewing system from Germany to go with the new digs.

"One guy can manage multiple 60-barrel batches of beer at time," owner Dave Benfield said, while leading a tour of the brewery. "Everything is automated, computerized, and touch screen."

Mimicking the brewery's move into a bigger space, the company itself has been growing. DuClaw's current capacity is 30,000 barrels compared to where it started at just 1,000. And now the beer is available in five states: Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. Benfield says DuClaw will be in North Carolina in about a month.

To date, the brewing company has opened four restaurants, created 35 beers (with other variations and blends), and says, by far, its most popular is the Sweet Baby Jesus, a chocolate peanut butter porter that accounts for about half of DuClaw's sales.

"A lot of breweries come out with series ...More info on site

Brewery news EU & Japan: EU planning to talk to Japan to open its beer market to European countries within free trade agreement
The European Union (EU) is planning to talk to Japan on opening the latter's beer market to the European countries prior to the signing of a free trade deal in 2015, Drinks Business Review reported on November 20.

The EU countries including France and Germany will ask Japan to alter rules controlling alcoholic beverage imports, as well as product specifications, Reuters reported.

The news agency quoted an EU document as saying: "For beer, the impact on trade is rather significant.

"Many of the European beers cannot be marketed as beers in Japan because of insufficient - according to the Japanese legislation - malt content or because they have some ingredients such as coriander."

The EU-Japan trade agreement is anticipated to increase economic output of both the countries by around 1%.

Said to be the world's third largest beer market in terms of profit generation, Japan is dominated by domestic producers such as Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo and Suntory.

Europeans have a negligible presence with joint ventures allowing local production of beers such as Heineken.

Brewery news South Korea: AB InBev names new CEO for Oriental Brewery
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world's largest brewer, has named a new CEO for its Korean unit, Oriental Brewery (OB), while appointing former CEO Chang In-soo to a newly established vice chairman post, The Korea Times reported on November 20.

The move is largely seen as an effort to solidify AB InBev's control of the nation's largest brewer and create synergy with its units in other countries. In April, AB InBev acquired OB, which accounts for about 60 percent of Korea's beer market, for $5.8 billion.

OB said on November 20 that Frederico Freire, 43, former vice president of AB InBev's Asia-Pacific regional headquarters in Shanghai, will come to Korea to take the helm. Freire, born in Brazil, has been with the brewer since 1996, serving in various posts in sales, marketing and procurement.

"I am happy to be part of the OB family which has successfully transformed the company into Korea's No.1 brewer," Freire was quoted as saying by the company. "I will do my best to further strengthen OB's competitiveness and help it achieve sustainable growth by making the best use of AB InBev's global network and advanced production knowhow."

Former CEO Chang In-soo is expected to remain part of the firm's ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Report shows craft beer industry is booming in Ireland
Minister Coveney has launched the first official development and economic impact report on microbreweries in Ireland. The report was commissioned by the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland (ICBI), an association set up earlier this year in response to the dramatic growth within the micro brewing market in Ireland, ftt.ie reported on November 21.

Although significant growth and development within this market was noted in recent years, there was no numerical or growth research carried out prior to this to quantify the market growth and the resultant economic impact of such.

Seamus O’Hara, spokesperson for the ICBI and of Carlow Brewing Company, said: “A natural first step of an association is to establish an official piece of research on what impact its industry is having on both the national economy and on its operational market.” The report was researched and written by Bernard Feeney, a respected economic consultant. Some of the key findings within the report include:

A significant increase in the number microbreweries occurred in the last two years. It is estimated that there are 33 microbreweries operating in Ireland, the majority of which are microbreweries engaged in own production. At least 17 other microbreweries are at development stage, with the majority expected ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Moa Group posts wider loss for H1 2014
Moa Group posted a wider first-half loss after the unprofitable boutique beer maker restructured its fledgling business and changed distribution and brewing arrangements to underpin future growth, The New Zealand Herald reported on November 19.

The Auckland-based company posted a loss of NZ$3.21 million, or 9.5 cents a share, in the six months ended Sept. 30, from a loss of NZ$3.04 million, or 10.1 New Zealand cents, a year earlier, it said in a statement.

Revenue rose 71 percent to NZ$2.5 million, while the company took a one-time charge of NZ$438,000 to write down packaging, old stock, plant and glass moulds following its decision to change its local supplier. That compares with one-time charges of NZ$353,000 in the year-earlier period to end its New Zealand and Australian distribution agreements.

Moa, headed by chief executive Geoff Ross and chairman Grant Baker who developed the 42 Below vodka brand, has changed to a more direct distribution model, contracting out brewing for many products to McCashin's brewery in Nelson and raising NZ$5.75 million from shareholders to fund growth.

The company's gross profit margin improved to 19.7 percent in the first half, from 13.6 percent a year earlier as it focused on improving New Zealand sales.

Brewery news Malaysia: Malaysian brewers planning to ask the government to revise its taxation strategies
Fearing a possible hike in taxes for alcohol, Malaysia’s brewers are planning to send a memorandum to the government to revise its taxation strategies, as a pre-emptive measure to stave off a possible increase, The Malaysian Reserve reported on November 20.

Their argument is that a hike in excise tax would be counterproductive and would hurt the beer industry and help increase the consumption of contraband beers which are priced lower than locally produced beers.

Guinness Anchor Bhd’s (GAB) MD, Hans Essaadi said the local brewery manufacturing cost has increased by 10% since 2013 due to the new transfer pricing valuation which was implemented in Nov 1 last year.

“Ad valorem tax is only imposed on the manufacturing costs of imported beers. For locally produced beers, ad valorem tax is imposed on the manufacturing costs, advertising and promotional costs as well as on the royalties.

Brewery news India: Beer makers to intensify lobbying for tax structure rationalisation
India beer makers have decided to intensify their lobbying for rationalisation of tax structure with the governments of major states across the country. To begin with, they have approached the Andhra Pradesh (AP) excise minister and apprised him of the need to tax the beverage based on the alcohol content and not to club it with spirits (hard liquor), Business Standard reported on November 16.

"We have started with AP as we came to know that the state government is on the verge of framing a new excise policy. We will take up this issue from now onwards with all the major states in the country by March 2015, before the commencement of the next financial year," All India Breweries Association (AIBA) director general, Shobhan Roy, said.

"We are trying to find more natural Korean ingredients in to come up with authentic Korean flavors as well as to secure consistent supply sources," KCB director Seok Jin-young said.

The brewery was built and is operated with Korean funds, while Kiuchi supplies expertise from its master brewers. Beers brewed at the site have hit store shelves.

"The beers are definitely Korean products. Although they use the Japanese brand and craftsmanship, they are made largely with ingredients from Korea."

Kiuchi is the latest addition to the rapidly ...More info on site
