Barley news Japan & Canada: Japanese brewers count on malting barley from Canada
Japanese brewers love Canadian malting barley.

They want to keep it that way, but the malt’s got to keep getting better, The Western Producer reported on May 2.

“We need varieties with distinctive value, brand and positioning.… We can make it through good co-operation,” Kensuke Ogushi, beer ingredients director with Sapporo Breweries, told the Canadian Global Crops Symposium.

“Let us continue (to) work together in the future.”

Canada has been Japan’s biggest supplier of malting barley for the past 10 years, edging out Australia and European suppliers.

The Japanese are steady beer consumers and wealthy, premium-paying drinkers, make it a much-valued market in the eyes of barley marketers.

Sapporo is Japan’s oldest brewery and has been directly involved in developing its own varieties since its birth in the 1870s.

It continues to be involved in development, helping create new varieties in Canada, Australia and Europe that meet its needs for specific malt characteristics.

It’s why Ogushi thinks Canada can remain a key supplier.

Ogushi said the development of CDC PolarStar is an example of Canada’s edge as a supplier. Crop breeding experts from Japan and Canada collaborated to produce an ideal variety for Japanese beer that can grow well in Western Canada. It is a combination of germplasm from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors doing whatever it can to keep up with rising demand for craft beer
Molson Coors Brewing has a problem, and it's a crafty one.

The premium light beer that has been the mainstay of the company for generations continues to be one of the world's most popular brands, but there are signs of trouble, The Denver Post reported on May 6.

Light beer sales have been flat or declining. Consumer surveys suggest people have grown tired of the taste. And the more expensive craft-beer market has been growing larger every year.

In a recent interview with The Denver Post, Pete coors, the 67-year-old chairman of Molson Coors, said his company is doing whatever it can to keep up.

"Basically the biggest trouble we have is on-premise sales," Coors said. "We have a lot of bar owners who are enamored with craft beers. They are beginning to take off the premium light handles and putting bottles behind the bar instead and replacing the handles with craft beer handles. We lose 50 percent of our volume when that happens."

Coors has compelling reasons for bar owners to keep its beers on tap.

"Having a premium light brand — whether it's Coors, Miller or Bud — on tap actually improves the economics of their business," he said. "People stay in their seats ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: North High Brewing to expand in the coming months
North High Brewing is making the leap from one of Columbus’ most micro of microbreweries to one of the biggest in the coming months, Columbus Business First reported on May 2.

What does expansion mean for North High as it gets ready to jump from a two-barrel brewing system to a 20-barrel operation? Co-owners Gavin Meyers and Tim Ward said first and foremost, it’ll be able to keep its own pub stocked. The goal is to carry 10 North High beers at all times, Meyers said. At times in the first 15 months of business, it has been down to as few as six. The plan is to bring some more consistency to its lineup too.

Every brewer has had a different approach to market. Four String Brewing Co., as one example, started with just two beers and has gradually added from there to build a lineup of four year-round beers with several seasonals. North High has been at the other end of that spectrum, having produced more than 90 beers since opening.

“We have 30 recipes we feel are ready to take to a mass level,” Meyers said.

They will keep the two-barrel system at the brewpub operating and it still will be ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Refined Fool Brewing opened in Sarnia on May 2
In a rare example of a new brewery opening on schedule, Sarnia’s Refined Fool Brewing was launched on May 2, meeting the target originally announced a couple of months ago, Canadian Beer News reported.

Founded by “a group of teachers, creatives, blue collars, entrepreneurs, musicians and pastors,” Refined Fool opened its facility at 137 Davis St. to the public offering six beers – The Brouhaha Nut Brown, Joe Sent Me Milk Stout, Noble Oaf Rye Saison, Ripsnorter Vanilla Porter, Antique Peepshow IPA and Short Pier, Long Walk Double IPA – on tap for on-site sampling, and in growlers and 750 ml bottles to take home.

The brewery’s regular retail hours as well as details of a Growler Club and future brands will be announced in coming days and weeks following the grand opening.

Brewery news USA, IN: The Burgh Brewing Company is raising funds to open in Newburgh
A Newburgh, IN man who will finish college next week is on tap for a unique start, 14 News reported on May 4.

Dustin Gunter is preparing to start the Burgh Brewing Company in Downtown Newburgh.

He started brewing beer at home for his friends and family as an experiment.

Now he's looking to turn that hobby into a career in order to give back to the community that has given him so much.

"What I put into every single glass should reflect a story or an experience," Gunter said. "We're really wanting to share those stories and experiences with the town where we're going to operate."

The Burgh Brewing Company is raising funds before they can officially start the brewing on a large scale.

Brewery news USA, CA: Boneshaker Community Brewery opened in Rocklin
The folks behind Boneshaker Public House in Rocklin have opened Boneshaker Community Brewery in Rocklin, Sacramento Business Journal reported on May 2.

The public house has been open for several years serving a rotating roster of beers.

Now the brewery is serving house-made beers in a 4,500-square-foot restaurant and brewery.

Later this month, an extra 1,500 square feet of space will be added to the brewery, featuring a small stage for live music and comedy.

The brewery is using a 3.5 barrel system to make a rotating menu of beers, said JJ Anderson, owner of both Boneshakers.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Innocente Brewing officially launched in Waterloo
Three decades after the opening of Brick Brewery in Waterloo ushered in the first wave of modern microbreweries in Ontario, the city is finally home to a craft brewery from the current wave, with last week’s official launch of Innocente Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on May 5.

Founded by Steven Innocente – an avid homebrewer who decided to end his two decade career as a cancer scientist to start up a brewery – the self-named company will focus on hop-forward ales that will be available primarily on draught and cask at pubs throughout Southern Ontario.

Innocente debuted with two ales – Innocente Bystander, a 4% abv and 125 IBU pale ale that was originally a flagship brand during Innocente’s 2012-13 run as a contract brewer in Scotland; and Innocente Fling, a 5.7% abv golden ale that features “trans-Atlantic infusion of UK Challenger and US Mt Hood hops.”

Innocente beers are currently on tap at select restaurants and bars in the Waterloo area, including The Bent Elbow and Beertown.

Brewery news USA, GA: Knucklehead Craft Brewing may launch in Webster as early as this fall
Two businessmen are finalizing plans to open a new craft brewery in Webster, Democrat & Chronicle reported on May 4.

It'll be called Knucklehead Craft Brewing, and owners George Cline and Len Dummer have some big plans for the new place.

When Knucklehead opens for business, the 5 BBL (155-gallon) brewing system and the four 155-gallon fermenters in its back rooms will keep two of the bar taps flowing with a rotating variety of one-and-done Knucklehead seasonal brews. Six other taps will feature a variety of flagship beers, including a Scotch ale, a caramel stout, a blonde ale, an amber ale, a Belgian IPA and a pale ale.

Both George Cline and Len Dummer have regular full-time jobs in real estate and home inspection. "Those are our passions," Len said, but "this is a real burning desire passion."

"It's not about making money. It's about joining the community," Len said.

When will the brewery open? They're not exactly sure yet. There's still lots to do before they can open their doors. But if everything goes smoothly, they're hoping that will be as early as this fall.

Brewery news USA, NC: Pig Pounder Brewery launched in Greensboro
The name “Pig Pounder” comes from a beer formerly licensed by Darryl's restaurants that featured a pig in the logo and was served up in 16 oz. (16 ounces in a pound) glasses. Regulars began calling it the Pig Pounder, Triad Business Journal reported on May 2.

And pretty soon, Darryl's customers, along with those at the soon-to-open Marshall Free House and Burger Warfare eateries in Greensboro, will be able to drink a Pig Pounder again.

The Pig Pounder Brewery is being launched by developer and restaurateur Marty Kotis to provide a unique brew for his restaurants. It began brewing its first batches last week en route to a June 5 opening of its tasting room.

"This is really an amenity for all of our restaurant operations or the standalone tasting room," Kotis said. "The point is to provide something special to our customers in our restaurants."

At its start, Pig Pounder is brewing an English-style bitter, an extra special bitter, a mild, a brown ale, a stout and a saison.

A specialty going forward will be doing cask ales, so-called "real ales" that are stored in smaller casks, tend to have a maltier flavor palate and are traditionally served at warmer temperatures with less ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Underdog’s Brewhouse ready for June opening
With a name inspired by the position that new craft breweries often find themselves in compared to more established and larger brands, Underdog’s Brewhouse is currently being prepared for a summer opening in Ontario’s Durham Region, Canadian Beer News reported on May 2.

Founded by two brothers aiming to play a role in the “Better Beer Revolution,” Underdog is aiming to open in June at 1100 Skae Drive in Oshawa, with All or Nothing Hopfenweisse as its flagship beer.

Appearances at beer festivals throughout the summer are also being planned, with a booking at Toronto’s Festival of Beer already mentioned on the brewery’s Facebook page.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Alberta’s first nanobrewery to open in Calgary next month
Prairie beer blog OnBeer.org reports that beer drinkers in Alberta will soon be able to enjoy the results of last year’s changes to minimum alcohol production laws, as the province’s first nanobrewery is getting set to open soon in Calgary.

The Dandy Brewing Company is a small start-up from a team of four local homebrewers who intend to specialize in British styled & inspired ales.

Aiming for a June opening, the brewery will be launching with two brands – Dandy in the Underworld, “a sweet oyster-style stout (with no oysters added)”; and Golden Brown Dandy Ale, which is “not overly bitter but has a complex hop schedule.”

Brewery news USA, VA: Callaway welcomes Chaos Mountain Brewing
After months of preparations, Chaos Mountain Brewing is open for business in Callaway. On May 3 people came from as far away as North Carolina for the opening, wdbj7.com reported.

“I think our community is exceedingly proud. People came in and were like really this is beautiful,” said owner Wendy Hallock.

The brewery occupies around 20,000 square feet, and owners estimated around 700 people attended its grand opening.

“It was non-stop. From the time that we opened up and people stated coming in, we were a constant flow of in and out all day long,” said owner Joe Hallock.

“To have that many people come out to the brewery for the first day was, it was a great feeling just to know that there is definitely a demand there,” said Joe Hallock.

“I think people love to embrace local. I think there is a great market for craft beers in general and people like trying new things,” Wendy Hallock.

Six beers are on tap at the brewery. They are hoping to add two more within the next week.

Chaos Mountain already started to distribute beer at some local stores and hopes to expand into nearby cities soon.

Brewery news USA, MD: Denizens Brewing Co. to be the largest in Montgomery County, Maryland
Emily Bruno has evaluated aid programs for the U.S. State Department, consulted with federal clients for accounting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers and directed research for the National Women’s Business Council.

Now she has a new wrinkle: co-founder and operations director of Denizens Brewing Co., which plans to open a brewery and seasonal beer garden in downtown Silver Spring this summer, Gazette.net reported on May 5.

Denizens will be the largest production brewery in Montgomery County, Bruno said. The business will brew 15 barrels of beer at a time and employ some 40 people, she said.

“We plan to have a major production facility,” said Bruno, who oversaw the moving of barrels and other equipment into a 7,500-square-foot building last week.

By contrast, the nanobrewery Baying Hound Aleworks in east Rockville typically brews one to five barrels at a time in producing small-batch beers. Other brew pubs in the county work with fewer barrels or are part of national chains that manufacture beer off-site.

The brewery will open as county officials have struggled to find new nightlife venues for the younger crowd. Bruno and co-founder Julie Verratti — an adviser with the U.S. Small Business Administration, an attorney, and Denizens’ business development director — live in Silver Spring ...More info on site

Brewery news China: AB InBev’s position in northwest China strengthened by recent acquisition
Northeastern China is a land of shuttered factories and gritty cities that's often compared to America's Rust Belt, The Street reported on May 6.

It's also a land of enthusiastic beer drinkers in a country where beer consumption is growing fast -- jumping 4.6% last year from 2012 to a world-leading 49 billion litres, according to China's official industry data. China is become a competitive focal point for the globe's biggest breweries.

And the center of this focal point for Anheuser-Busch InBev, SABMiller, Japan's Asahi and other beer giants is depressed, rusting northeastern China.

The competition intensified last month when InBev bought Ginsber, a brewery with a capacity of about 500 million litres a year that's based in the northeastern city of Jilin.

Ginsber's rival brands include SABMiller-affiliated beer named Snow, Asahi-invested Tsingtao and Chinese state-owned Yanjing. Upscale beers also available on area supermarket shelves include Denmark's Carlsberg and Holland's Heineken.

InBev did not disclose terms of the deal with Ginsber's seller Hongzui Group, a Communist Party-led enterprise based in the city of Siping that also makes chemicals, building materials and soybean oil.

But when China's Ministry of Commerce announced that the central government had approved Ginsber's sale to a foreign company, it said the deal ...More info on site

Brewery news Pakistan: Murree Brewery enjoys revenues and profits increase amid struggling economy
Murree Brewery, the 153-year-old producer of beer and spirits, was established by the British and continues in what is today Pakistan. It survived partition and the creation of Pakistan as a Muslim-majority nation. It kept brewing during the sweeping Islamization efforts of the late 70s and 80s, when access to alcohol was restricted to the tiny non-Muslim minority. It has also weathered the doldrums of Pakistan’s economy, and is one of the most successful businesses in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on May 4.

While Pakistan’s economy struggles to grow, Murree Brewery’s revenues and profits in the third quarter are up sharply, following a record-breaking year in 2013, according to the company’s financial reports.

The brewery is meticulous about its accounts, partly because it is acutely aware of its position in a country where alcohol is illegal for the majority of the population.

“We don’t give anyone a cause of pointing a finger at us,” says Major Sabihur Rehman, special assistant to the brewery’s chief executive, Isphanyar Bhandara. That extends from ensuring the company’s finances are perfectly maintained to the treatment of the employees, who belong to one of the country’s most active labor unions.

The brewery’s over 1,500 employees are nearly ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Scottish growers may be forced away from growing malting barley by new three-crop rule
Scottish growers would be forced away from growing established crops such as malting barley under the three-crop rule, NFU Scotland has warned.

Instead of being market-focused in the crops they grow, they would have to plant other crops simply to secure the “greening” element of support available under the common agricultural policy (CAP), Farmers’ Weekly reported on May 6.

NFU Scotland claimed that the policy was “nonsensical” in Scotland’s point of view and it has backed DEFRA’s plans for a review of the crop diversification element of the new CAP reform requirements.

Following a meeting with DEFRA secretary Owen Paterson in Edinburgh last week, the union has prepared a briefing on the three-crop rule – which will require most arable growers to grow three different crops from 2015 onwards.

It has submitted it to the minister to support his effort for the greening measure to be reviewed at European level.

“A primary reason for the three crop rule’s inclusion in the greening requirements of the reform package was as a means of combating monoculture – an issue in some regions of the EU – but certainly not Scotland,” said NFUS president Nigel Miller.

“We have consistently highlighted the damage that crop diversification requirements could wreak on ...More info on site
