Malt news USA: Colorado Malting Company awarded a $39,000 grant to automate its malting facility
Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa was awarded last week a $39,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to help it come up with a plan to automate its malting facility, West Word reported on April 21.

CMC already runs five malting units 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But operating them is very labor-intensive, so the grant will help reduce those costs, says Jason Cody, whose family has been growing barley in southwestern Colorado for three generations.

"It would allow us to handle our products more efficiency," he says, adding that the company has applied for another grant as well, and should hear about that one in July.

CMC primarily serves the craft-brewing industry in Colorado - the big brewers like MillerCoors and Anheuser Busch do all of their own malting themselves - but it can't come close to supplying the amount of malt that companies like New Belgium, Ska, Odell and Oskar Blues need on a regular basis for their year-round beers.

So many of the breweries only use CMC malts for special, small-batch projects, taproom specials or one-off beers. But automation could start to change that - and it's just the beginning of CMC's plans over the next ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing to sell its iconic brewhouse in Waterloo
Brick Brewing plans to sell its iconic building and property on King Street South in Waterloo and expand its operations in Kitchener.

The beer maker disclosed the plans in a news release on April 17 in which it reported its year-end financial results.

It said it will use the proceeds of the sale, and debt, to invest in its facilities on Bingemans Centre Drive in Kitchener, including the addition of a brew house.

The building at 181 King St. S., is the public face of Brick, which became Ontario's first craft brewery when it opened in 1984. It contains a brew house, offices, hospitality room and retail store.

The pending sale of the property was described as a win for the company and a win for Waterloo Region's plan to see redevelopment along the light-rail-transit line.

"We will have a chance to invest and expand in the Kitchener location," Sean Byrne, Brick's chief financial officer, said in an interview.

The Kitchener facility, built in 1995, currently houses a bottling plant, as well as a warehouse and distribution centre.

A brew house and offices will be built next to the existing facility, said the company.

"We have extended our lease agreement in our Kitchener facility through 2025, with an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: The first batch of Chicago-brewed Lagunitas beer is done
The first batch of Chicago-brewed Lagunitas beer is done, Chicago Business reported on April 18.

Workers at the 300,000-square-foot Douglas Park facility have been firing up the bottling line and slapping on Lagunitas India Pale Ale labels since last week. Once they flip the switch, the line will fill 500 bottles a minute.

"It's just the IPA right now," said owner Tony Magee. "It's the beer we know best."

Mr. Magee had hoped to start the Douglas Park operation late last year, but various delays pushed the launch until this month.

The first 750-barrel batch of beer was mixed a few weeks ago before heading to the brewery's fermenting tanks and filtration system. Other batches of IPA are right behind as production begins to ramp up. The Chicago brewery is set to start making Little Sumpin' Sumpin' beer next month.

As for the Douglas Park taproom, that should be open by late May, just in time for the Lagunitas Beer Circus event.

Lagunitas is now the state's largest brewer, with the annual capacity to produce up to 200,000 barrels of beer. One barrel holds 31 gallons. Mr. Magee wanted to build a second brewery to alleviate production demands at the Petaluma, Calif., facility.

"There's going to be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Blowing Rock Brewing Company’s first beer from new brewery almost ready
The first beer brewed at Blowing Rock Brewing Company’s new brewery in Hickory is almost ready, Hickory Record reported on April 20.

Blowing Rock Brewing Company operates a brewery and restaurant in Blowing Rock. The company’s Legacy Series will be produced and packaged at the Hickory brewery. The Legacy Series includes a High Country Ale, IPA and Summer Ale. The series has been brewed in Pennsylvania until now.

Blowing Rock Brewing Company’s founders, Todd Rice and Jeff Walker, explain once the brewery is running smoothly, they plan to open a retail space with a restaurant and brew pub attached to the brewery. They said the new space will maintain the industrial spirit guests find at Highland Av enue restaurant and The Crossing event space upstairs.

“We want to keep in touch with the era in which this mill was built,” Rice said.

The founders hope Blowing Rock Brewing Company’s new location will become the gateway to the burgeoning craft beer scene in Western North Carolina. Rice said the new brewery is the 85th in North Carolina. “It’s become a craft beer Mecca,” he said.

With easy access to Interstate 40 and Charlotte, Rice said he and Walker plan to grow their business into a regional brand.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Big Axe Brewery launched in Nackawic, NB
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reported on April 17 that Big Axe Brewery has opened for business in Nackawic, NB, a small town on the Saint John River west of Fredericton.

Founded by Peter and Tatiana Cole – owners of the co-located Big Axe Bed & Breakfast – with partners Simon and Michelle Popowich, the brewery was approved by the ANBL to start sales on Tuesday April 15th, and immediately launched on-site growler sales for its first two brands, Chantarelle Cream Ale and Double Bit IPA.

Big Axe beers will also be served to guests at the bed & breakfast, and will be on tap soon at the King Street Alehouse in Fredericton and other local bars and restaurants.

Brewery news USA, KS: Walnut River Brewing Co. embarking on major expansion
El Dorado’s Walnut River Brewing Co. is embarking on a major expansion that will allow the microbrewery to supply more bars and to begin selling cans in liquor stores, Wichita Business Journal reported on April 21.

Co-owner BJ Hunt says Walnut River is installing a 30-barrel (930 gallon) brewing system to replace its current 2-barrel (62 gallon) system. In other words, it’s multiplying its capacity 15 times. And, Hunt says, Walnut River will be brewing four times a week on the new system, vs. three times now, further adding to the amount of product it can produce.

Hunt and Rick Goehring, the head brewer, opened Walnut River in mid-2013 and twice added fermenters to keep up with growing demand. But Hunt says it’s still been hard to keep its five brews in stock.

“We routinely run out of beer,” he says.

The beer is available at the brewery’s facility at 111 W. Locust Ave in El Dorado and at five area bars.

Once the new system is installed, “we should be able to be in about as many bars as want us,” Hunt says.

The brewery is also installing a canning line, which eventually will allow Walnut River beer to be sold in liquor stores. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Macon Beer waiting for new equipment to expand production by 400%
Macon Beer Co. is planning to greatly expand its production capacity, The Telegraph reported on April 21.

The equipment that will allow the Macon-based company to increase production by 400 percent is scheduled to arrive during the next couple of weeks and will be installed in May, according to a news release. It takes about a month to make a batch of beer, so it will be summer before the market sees the impact of the increased production.

“The additional capacity gets us a step closer to canning our beers and that will result in potential product placement in package stores, grocery stores, and restaurants without draft beer, such as Ingleside Village Pizza and Lemongrass (in Macon),” co-owner Cory Smith said in the release. “It also gets a Macon product into other areas of the state, therefore bringing more revenue back to our town.”

Once operational, the expansion will allow Macon Beer to produce enough beer to expand distribution to other regions of the state, such as metro Atlanta, Augusta and Columbus.

The newly manufactured fermentation vessels, custom designed for Macon Beer, were made in Oregon using American-made steel, which co-owner Jeremy Knowles said was important.

“It’s more expensive sometimes, but we are strong advocates ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in Utica to expand
F.X. Matt Brewing Co. is looking to expand, UticaOD.com reported on April 18.

The brewery recently purchased several properties, on Edward Street, in West Utica with the aim to set up tanks to expand its capacity, Matt’s Chairman and CEO Nick Matt said.

“We’re planning to add on Edward Street tanks — fermenting and aging tanks — and a small building that would be used to monitor and run all that,” he said of the purchased buildings from 808-830 Edward St.

F.X. Matt Brewing Co. currently brews about 350,000 barrels of beer a year, Matt said.

“As we get to the real peaks (like the fall season), we really are tight on capacity,” he said. “It really is consistent with what’s happening in craft brewing. Consumers are more and more interested in craft brews.”

The expansion could increase capacity between 100,000 to 150,000 barrels, Matt said, and eventually could need a second shift — which means added employment.

The brewery is set to be on the city Planning Board agenda at the next meeting for a zoning ordinance, since last week’s meeting was cancelled.

The zoning amendment is necessary in order to change the current zoning from multifamily residential to industrial, according to the board’s agenda.

Matt said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Bitter fight over legalization of half-gallon beer containers continues
The fight between craft brewers and the distributors of Budweiser over the legalization of half-gallon beer containers in Florida has gotten so bitter that it is even being likened to extortion, Miami Herald reported on April 19.

The issue seems simple enough: Florida allows breweries to fill quart and gallon containers — called growlers — at their tap rooms, but the half-gallon size that's the industry standard in 47 other states remains illegal. Brewers, their customers and some lawmakers think the state should just get rid of the restriction that many call silly. But the politically powerful Anheuser-Busch InBev distributors have a powerful ally in Senate President Don Gaetz as they try to force craft breweries to give up some of their profit.

The latest idea is to force breweries to buy their own beer from distributors at a markup before they can sell cans and bottles to brewery visitors — the beer, in most cases, wouldn't even leave the premises or be handled by the distributors. Now, the brewers don't have to use a middleman.

"It's like paying protection money" to the mob, said Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, who supports allowing half-gallon growlers with no strings attached.

Gaetz has in recent weeks been ...More info on site

Barley news France: Malting barley markets very calm, prices higher because of lack of precipitations
France’s malting barley markets are very calm. Traders and buyers are waiting for news on the Ukraine crisis, weather, and other factors, before making any offers or commitments, La Depeche reported on April 22.

A certain firmness can be noted for new crop spring barley, which, in turn, provides a boost to the old crop prices. The increase is a consequence of the actual weather conditions, which is judged too dry and could affect the spring plantings, industry sources said.

Barley news UK: Barley exports in February just slightly higher than in January this year
The latest trade data from HMR&C showed the largest drop in UK maize imports for the season, so far, between January and February.

At 172 thousand tonnes in February, UK maize imports were 45% lower than in January.

Wheat imports, at 82 thousand tonnes in February, were 34% lower compared with January and brought the cumulative total for July-February to 1.55 mln tonnes.

Barley exports from the UK, at just under 80 thousand tonnes, were only slightly higher than January's total.

Barley news Ukraine: Almost all spring wheat, barley and oats now in the ground
Almost all Ukrainian spring wheat, barley and oats are now in the ground, with 100%, 96% and 97% of intended area planted as of 18th April, respectively, industry sources reported on April 22.

Maize plantings are ahead of the previous seven seasons' progress with 10% planted to 529 thousand ha. Risks still exist in terms of acquiring fertilisers and other inputs, but with the crop in the ground, the weather is likely to be the key factor for Ukrainian spring crops.

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken unveils the first draught beer in Nigeria
In order to further its influence in the beer market, Heineken, the world’s third-largest beer maker, has unveiled the first draught beer in Nigeria, This Day Live reported on April 21.

The unveiling which took place recently at the Heineken House, Lagos was said to be in line with the brand’s commitment of opening the world of its consumers.

The innovation described as “The David system” was introduced to the media by Franck Evers, Heineken’s global draught master, ambassador and Master Pourer, who does this training for the brand all over the world. The system keeps the beer fresh for upward of 30 days.

The draught master told his audience that the way a beer is served is crucial in keeping its quality thus making the experience of enjoying it more wholesome.

“If you want the beer to taste the way it was intended, he said “it’s all about the 5 Perfect Serve Steps: The beer, which must be extra cold should be poured into an extra cold Heineken glass at 45 degrees slanting; this will achieve a two finger wide foam head. Afterwards, it’s ready to be served."

Senior Brand Manager, Heineken, Mrs. Ngozi Nkwoji said the innovation is a big investment from Heineken ...More info on site

Whisky news Australia: The Scotch Whisky Association takes measures to combat Scotch whisky fakes in Australia
The Scotch whisky trademark has been won by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), which it says will help combat fakes on the market, Foodmagazine reported on April 23.

According to the SWA, Australia has one of the worst markets for fake whisky, with the industry body taking action against the sale of 40 brands in Australia in 2005, The Herald Scotland reports. It places blame on the removal of specific protection of scotch from the country’s Food Standards Code in 2000.

In response, the SWA sought support from the UK government and European Commission, leading to the UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague drawing attention to the issue in bilateral meetings with the Australian government during his visit to Australia.

For a spirit to be marketed as Scotch whisky, according to SWA guidelines it must have been distilled in Scotland using malted barley, with no other ingredient added except caramel colouring and water.

SWA legal adviser Alan Park said "registration of Scotch whisky as a certification trademark is a major breakthrough and will make it easier to crack down on fakes and therefore protect consumers."

"Scotch whisky exports are of immense value to the economy so overseas protection is vital. We will be monitoring the market ...More info on site
