Brewery news USA: Some of once very popular beers now struggling to attract consumers’ interest
Beer is not selling the way it used to. U.S. sales of the beverage declined in four of the past five years. Between 2007 and 2012, beer sales fell by 2.3%, or more than 4.8 million barrels, Business Time reported on February 27.

This overall drop in beer sales is yet another challenge many of the once most popular U.S. brands have to overcome as they continue to lose market share. According to data provided by Beer Marketer’s Insights, American sales of nine major brands, including the once top-selling Budweiser, declined by more than 25% over the past five years. Michelob Light’s U.S. sales declined by nearly 70%.

According to Eric Shepard, executive editor at Beer Marketer’s Insights, major brewers point to the lingering effects of the recession as the reason beer sales are down. While this is clearly the case, it is likely just one of the causes.

Wine and spirits have done much better, especially as they added flavored brands. “The [beer] brewers have dabbled in that, and have had some success with, for example, Redd’s Apple Ale, but nowhere near the success that flavored vodkas and flavored whiskeys have had,” Shepard said. Flavored and craft beers have performed extremely ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Ruckus set to purchase Allentown's historic Neuweiler brewery
It has taken them a full year, but Ruckus Marketing has raised the cash it needs to close on its purchase of Allentown's historic Neuweiler brewery, the Morning Call reported on February 25.

The New York-based marketing firm, which owns Ruckus Brewing and wants to rehab the North Front Street brewery so it can brew its beer and other beers there under contract, has secured financing from unidentified private investors to close on the property starting February 28.

"It is a step ahead we have to take. The town has been very supportive," Ruckus CEO Josh Wood said.

The Allentown Commercial Industrial Development Authority agreed on February 25 to give Ruckus up to three years from closing to complete at least $3 million in improvements before a "reverter" clause kicks in, allowing the authority to buy the property back for a fraction of the $1.7 million sale price.

Brewery news USA: Belgian-style wheat beer seen as fastest growing craft beer, but some question whether it can be called “craft”
A Belgian-style wheat beer by the name of Shock Top is the fastest growing craft beer in the US, according to Moody’s. Production of Shock Top surged by 64% between 2011 and 2012, according to data the ratings firm recently collected. For the record, Shock Top’s growth comes off a comparatively low base. Pennsylvania-based DG Yuengling is the largest craft beer in the US, according to Moody’s. It rolled out 3.3 million barrels in 2012, capturing 16% of the craft beer market share.

It should also be noted that Shock Top isn’t a concoction that some regional brewer came up with. The beer was launched by Belgian brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer by sales, in 2006 as a direct answer to Blue Moon, which marked big beer’s first major foray into the craft beers sector. (Blue Moon is made by MillerCoors, a joint venture of two of AB Inbev’s global rivals.)

As a result, some question whether it is even fair to call Shock Top a “craft beer.” The Brewers’ Association, a craft beer industry group, says these kinds of beers are more accurately described as “crafty,” because of what it says is the less-than-upfront way they’re are marketed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO & CT: New Planet Beer and United States Beverage to form joint venture
New Planet Beer, a Boulder-based craft brewer of gluten-free beer, has its sights set on becoming a national brand as a result of a joint venture announced on February 26, according to Dailycamera.com.

United States Beverage — a Stamford, CT based firm that distributes beverages such as Murphy's Stout, Black Dog Ale and Estrella Damm Lager — is now the exclusive sales and marketing representative for New Planet Beer, the companies announced on February 26.

Under the terms of the joint venture, US Beverage will manage all of New Planet Beer's sales and marketing efforts to build the gluten-free beer company's brand nationwide, officials said.

“US Beverage helped build an assortment of imported and craft brands during its 17 years of business,” Pedro Gonzalez, owner and founder of New Planet Beer, said in a statement. “We believe that they are the right team, at the right time, to take New Planet to the next level.”

The joint venture becomes effective as of Saturday, March 1. The joint venture consists of a sales and marketing representation agreement and does not include an investment or exchange of equity, Gonzalez said.

Moving forward, New Planet will continue to oversee production management and the development of gluten-free beers, officials said.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Calgary-based Wild Rose opens new production brewery
A new era officially began on February 26 for Calgary-based Wild Rose Brewery with the opening of its new production facility. The new brewery will increase the company’s capacity to make beer by four times the current level as it moves to meet a growing demand in the craft beer market, according to Calgary Herald.

“We have to get used to saying yes to our customers because we’ve become accustomed to saying sorry we don’t have the capacity. That’s no longer an issue now as we have the capacity to grow the business. It’s pretty exciting,” said Bill McKenzie, president and chief executive of Wild Rose.

The facility, which is just under 40,000 square feet, will allow the company to brew the equivalent of 80,000 kegs of beer each year - a huge increase from the previous 20,000-keg capacity.

“We have space allotted for future development but we’ve opened it up simply as a production facility. Probably a special events/banquet type of room. We’re still looking to relocate our Taproom,” said McKenzie.

The current Taproom will have to eventually move to make room for commercial development at the site.

McKenzie said 90 per cent of the company’s products will be brewed out of the new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Victory Brewing Company launches second facility
Victory Brewing Company is thrilled to announce the official premiere of their highly anticipated state-of-the-art brewery in Parkesburg, PA. The facility, which is more than 140,000 square feet set on 42 acres of rolling Chester County countryside, prepares the brewery for the next chapter in its history, Brewbound reported on February 27.

“In 2011, we faced the choice of either retracting markets or expanding our production, as demand outpaced our supply,” said Bill Covaleski, Victory’s president and co-founder/brewmaster. “I guess you know which way we landed! Now, after more than 18 months of planning and construction, we’re excited to finally show-off this beautiful new brewery.”

The location was chosen because of its similarities to Victory’s home in Downingtown. Just as the Downingtown brewery recycled an old Pepperidge Farm factory, the Parkesburg brewery is built within an existing building and both are situated less than 20 miles away from the headwaters of the east and west branches of the Brandywine Creek, respectively.

“Environmental impact and water quality were major considerations for this expansion. Nearly eight months of water-quality research found that the mineral composition of the west branch water is nearly identical to the east branch,” Covaleski continued. “Now the beer is flowing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company opens third location
Only a few months after celebrating their 3rd Anniversary, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. will be celebrating another milestone. The rapidly growing brewery will open its third location in Los Olivos, California. Slated to open on Friday, March 7, 2014, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. at “the Cottage” will feature a smaller version of their Buellton and Santa Barbara Taprooms, Brewbound reported on February 27.

“We are thrilled to bring our beer to Los Olivos,” exclaims Fig Mtn Brew President, Jaime Dietenhofer. “The tasting room at ‘The Cottage’ will be a great place for locals and visitors to enjoy craft beer made right here in the Santa Ynez Valley”.

Meanwhile, Fig Mtn Brew’s Buellton Taproom will be expanding with a new second level including a mezzanine overlooking the brewing facilities. Soon customers can enjoy a pint while watching a brew in progress. The second level, set to open in March, will boast a brand new bar and extra seating allowing for the upstairs to be closed for private events or special Taproom dinners and tastings.

Taproom manager, David Esdaile, talks about the new changes: “The recent growth throughout the company is certainly a testament to the fine work done by ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Beyond the Pale Company expands in Ottawa
Back in December, Ottawa’s Beyond the Pale Brewing had so much success in its opening year that owners Shane Clark, Al Clark and Robert McIsaac were already putting plans in place for a large expansion in 2014. Now those plans are about to become reality, Canadian Beer News reported on February 27.

According to Shane Clark, the brewery will be moving a few blocks east to a new 8,000 square foot space - quadruple the size of its current location.

The move will include the installation of a new 15 barrel brewing system, up from the 3.5 barrel system currently in use. This will allow Beyond the Pale to reduce production hours – currently running up to 20 hours a day, six days a week – while still producing more beer.

Clark says that work on the new location will start next month, with a tentative opening date of August. It will initially be a production-only brewery, with the retail store and tasting room remaining at the current Hamilton St. location, although all operations may eventually be consolidated at the new address.

Brewery news USA, CA: Track 7 Brewing Company signs first distribution agreement
Track 7 Brewing Company signed its first distribution agreement with Markstein Beverage Company of Sacramento, providing a single point of distribution for Sacramento, Solano, Eastern Yolo, Yuba, Sutter and Napa counties. Track 7 Brewing Company will continue to self-distribute outside of these counties, Brewbound reported on February 26.

Track 7 Brewing Co. was established in 2011 and has grown from 340 barrels of beer in its opening year to just under 1,200 barrels of beer in 2013. This distribution agreement marks an important milestone in Track 7′s strategic business plan and will allow it to focus on producing craft beer and manage its growth and capital reinvestment during 2014.

According to Ryan Graham, Co-owner, “Track 7 has grown considerably in the last several years. This distribution agreement is critical in order to maintain efficiencies in our delivery model and insure our customers get the freshest craft beer possible.” “Track 7 brews a consistently quality product and will be a great addition to our craft beer portfolio. We are looking forward to working with them and pleased to be part of their future business plans,” stated Jim Janus, Vice President and General Manager, Markstein Beverage Co of Sacramento.

Brewery news USA, OH: Wolf’s Ridge Brewing expanding in Columbus this summer
When it comes to the true brewpub experience in Central Ohio, Wolf’s Ridge Brewing stands out as one of the most authentic, serving up site-created craft beer and gourmet food to an eager and eclectic crowd of urbanites since opening last September, Columbusunderground.com reported on February 26.

Alan and Bob Szuter are the father-son team behind what has quickly become one of Downtown’s favorite new restaurants, and this summer, they will enhance their customers’ experience by adding an 80-guest taproom to their already impressive lineup of services.

The new taproom will occupy 2,300 square feet in the northwest corner of the 6,300 square feet compound. The space will also serve as keg storage for distribution, and grain storage for a larger malt room.

The taproom will have four large open-access windows overlooking the streets that will also allow cool air to move through during the warmer months.

There will be a heavily-rotated selection of high-quality craft beer, a real bonus with this addition as it allows the Szuters, who started home-brewing some 10 years ago, to make more small batches, firkins, cask ales, and collaborations with other microbreweries in the area.

“With the dining room, by nature, more aligned with the food, we have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Westfield River Brewing Company looking to expand in Southwick
Owners of the Westfield River Brewing Company are looking to expand with a move to Southwick. Sergio Bonavita is turning the former Chuck’s Steak House into his new brewing facility, Wwlp.com reported on February 26.

“We love Westfield and we’ve been very successful here, but we recognize that building has a lot to offer,” said Bonavita. Among the changes will be a hops farm behind the building. “We have been growing a half-acre of hops for two years now,” said Bonavita. “Now we’re ready to start two acres this year.” Bonavita said that within five years they hope to have 20 acres of hops planted on land behind the facility he will lease from John Whalley. “There is a shortage of hops and this way we can control our hops supply and costs,” said Bonavita.

If the Westfield River Brewing Company does not need the entire crop, Bonavita said they will be able to sell it to local microbreweries and home brewers. Moving to the larger space will also give them the opportunity to give tours of the brewery, as well as the hops field. It also lends itself to larger events at the brewery. “We plan to offer pints and have ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Brew Brothers closes, Last Best Brewing & Distilling opens fourth location
Brew Brothers Brewery, a Calgary-based brewing company that has been around for almost two decades – initially brewing under contract at other facilities, and then operating since 2002 out of its own small brewery – has announced that it will be closing its doors this Friday February 28th. But despite the sad closure, the location won’t be sitting empty for long, according to Canadian Beer News.

Taking possession of the space next Monday, March 3 will be Last Best Brewing & Distilling, the fourth location in the Bear Hill chain of brewpubs which also includes Wood Buffalo Brewing in Fort McMurray, Jasper Brewing in Jasper, and Banff Avenue Brewing in Banff.

As the name suggests, Last Best will also include a small distillery, the second for Bear Hill following the upcoming launch of the company’s – and Alberta’s – first micro-distillery at the Wood Buffalo location later this year.

Most details about Last Best are still to be confirmed, but the owners hope to start brewing in March for a spring opening.

Brewery news USA, MO: Cathedral Square Brewery to open facility in St. Louis
Cathedral Square Brewery is moving ahead with plans to open a brewery, restaurant and bar inside a former church in St. Louis.

In June 2012, owners Dr. Gurpreet Padda and Ami Grimes wanted to convert Holy Corners Second Baptist Church into a brewpub.

Brewmaster Brian Neville confirmed on February 26 that Padda and Grimes closed on the property at the beginning of this year. The new brewery will replace Cathedral Square's facility, according to Stltoday.com.

"We started brewing in there, thinking we'd open that up as a brewpub," Neville says of the former building, "Long story short, that building wasn't going to work out for a brewpub."

Cathedral Square's plan calls for the church's sanctuary to become the restaurant and bar -- the altar will be the back bar -- while the brewing equipment will be installed in the basement of an adjacent building.

Once Cathedral Square receives final approval of its plans, Neville says the first priority will be moving the brewing equipment from the old building into the new facility.

"I hope to be brewing beer there this year," Neville says.

The restaurant and bar likely won't open before 2015.

As with the current facility, the new brewery will account for only part of Cathedral ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev to launch Corona beer in Q2 this year
Ambev, the Brazilian arm of the world’s largest beer maker AB InBev, plans to introduce Corona beer in Brazil in the second quarter of this year, Terra Brasil reported on February 26.

The launch makes part of the company’s strategy to expand in the premium beer segment which offers a higher margin.

Joao Castro Neves, the company’s General Manager, said in a teleconference with analysts, the beer was expected to arrive in Brazil after the World Soccer Cup and to be positioned as a “super premium” product.

Last year, Ambev’s super premium beers accounted for about 7% of the company’s volume in Brazil. Its total beer sales in the country dropped by 4.3% damaged by inflation and unfavourable weather.

The company has a positive outlook for the current year, expecting that the beer industry will return to growth helped by lower prices and the FIFA World Cup.
