Canada, AB: Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission eases beer brewing rules
|
Two Calgary business partners that have been brewing beer in BC said on December 5 they will be able to realize their dream of a homegrown brewery, thanks to a decision by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.
But while Alberta’s liquor policy announcement was met with enthusiasm by Tool Shed Brewing Co., other small brewers said the changes don’t go nearly far enough, Calgary Herald reported on December 5.
Effective immediately, the AGLC will eliminate existing minimum production capacity requirements for liquor manufacturers in the province. It means that any fledgling brewer or distiller able to meet food safety standards can start a business, without having to ensure a certain volume output from the start.
“This is going to open the door for so many craft brewers — it’s incredible,” said Graham Sherman, co-founder of Tool Shed Brewing Co. “This means we don’t have to build a monstrous, C$2 million brewery to get started in Alberta, in Calgary, where we live. We can build a system that’s appropriately sized for us.”

USA, IL & MO: 4 Hands Brewing expanding distribution to Chicago in January
|
Craft beer enthusiasts in the Chicagoland area will soon have new artisanal ales to savor as a result of a partnership between Missouri-based producer, 4 Hands Brewing Co., and Illinois’ leading wholesale distributor, Wirtz Beverage. 4 Hands’ IPAs, stouts, porters, pale and amber ales become available on draft at bars and restaurants beginning January 2014. Packaged product will appear on store shelves by February, Beerpulse.com reported on December 3.
“This is the first time consumers in the Chicago area can get their hands on a 4 Hands beer. We’re really excited about that,” said David Kahle, Craft Beer Manager at Wirtz Beverage Illinois. “4 Hands brings something new to the table. They have a great creative spirit and they’re constantly pushing the envelope which is why their portfolio is so interesting and diverse.”
Started in 2011, 4 Hands Brewing Co. has a portfolio of twenty handmade, barrel-aged beers with more collaborations and original selections in the works. Canada & USA: Canadian brewery aims to reach US market
|
Central City Brewers + Distillers president Darryll Frost has spent most of his 49 years in pubs. His parents owned one. Today, he makes beer that is served from coast to coast and down to the Mexican border, Vancouver Sun reported on December 5.
"This place was built for export," he said of the recently opened 65,000-square-foot, $15.5-million facility the City of Surrey built on a two-hectare site. Leasing it for 20 years, Frost installed $11 million worth of plant, including a $6-million automatic line to output 250 bottles or cans of Red Racer and other Central City brands per minute. The plant will produce 8,000 hectolitres this year, 25,000 in 2014, and can handle 100,000 Frost said.
Half of the 2014 output will likely go to the US and a quarter each to BC and the rest of Canada, Frost said.
Meanwhile, there's room to grow.
He has first dibs on an adjacent hectare that could house "an enormous barrel room." That would be for far more than the 20,000 litres of whisky Central City has produced, with a 500-litre first batch of vodka due in January and gin to follow. USA, IN: Black Acre Brewing Company plans to expand beer operations
|
The Black Acre Brewing Co. is looking to expand its beer-brewing operations in Irvington, IN.
But to do that it needs a zoning variance for 5,000 square feet of space as it is zoned for commercial use, and needs an industrial classification to accommodate the brewery. Black Acre plans to maintain its current brewpub with its expansion, Indianapolis Business Journal reported on December 5.
Brewery owners signed a lease and began moving equipment into the space, but were stopped when the Department of Code Enforcement refused to grant them permits for interior work because they didn’t have proper zoning, according to an Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission staff report.
Black Acre wants the additional space because its small brewery at its pub produces just three barrels, or 93 gallons, at a time. The additional space would increase capacity fivefold, to 15 barrels, said Justin Miller, one of Black Acre's five owners.
"We need more production and we might possibly do a little bit of distribution," he said.
Black Acre’s request for the zoning change was on the commission’s December 4 agenda. But owners asked for, and received, a continuance until January 2 “to present the strongest case possible,” they said.

USA, AK: Alaskan Brewing Company rereleases Barley Wine Ale for 2013
|
The 2013 Alaskan Barley Wine Ale will hit stores this week in the 15 states where Alaskan Brewing distributes beer. A big, bold beer, the Alaskan Barley Wine has been brewed strong enough to keep people warm even on the coldest Alaska winter days, TheFullPint.com reported on December 5.
“For this year’s Barley Wine, we sourced all of our hops from Oregon, and I think that has made a real difference in the aroma and taste,” said Brian Ross, Production Assistant at Quality Assurance for the brewery. “The Oregon-grown cascade hops are very elegant and floral and that makes this Barley Wine extremely drinkable immediately.”
Alaskan Barley Wine is a full-bodied ale, deep mahogany in color and brewed with an array of complementing malts to achieve its high original gravity. Multiple hop additions in the boil and dry hopping during fermentation provide contrast to the big malt character resulting in the smooth balance that distinguishes this specialty brew.

USA, NY: Finger Lakes winemakers to open Lake Drum Brewing early next year
|
Two Finger Lakes winemakers have exceeded their goal to launch a “nanobrewery” and bar in Geneva.
Victor Pultinas and Jenna LaVita plan to open Lake Drum Brewing early next year, pending licensing. The location will serve as a production facility and a bar where patrons can sit and drink beer and hard cider, or take growlers to go, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on December 4.
Pultinas, who began his career in the wine industry as a tasting-room employee at Seneca Lake-based Billsboro Winery, describes the brewery’s upcoming product line as “clean and simple.”
“A lot of microbreweries that are popping up are tending to get really funky,” he says. “So we’re going to stick to the real original basics of beer – pale ales, stouts.”
Brewing had been a passion for Pultinas and LaVita, who met as students at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, long before they turned to platform Indiegogo to raise the project’s seed money. Their campaign has earned more than $10,800, some $800 beyond their goal.

USA, CA: City closes Petaluma Hills Brewing Company
|
Popular craft brewer Petaluma Hills Brewing Company was shut down by city code enforcement Tuesday, December 3 for failing to complete proper permit, safety and water regulations before opening for business, Petaluma Argus Courier reported on December 5.
The closure came just days after the brewer announced plans to allow fellow Petaluma beer makers HenHouse Brewing Company to rent its equipment to increase production from 80 barrels a year to more than 2,000 barrels.
In fact, news of the boost in output at Petaluma Hills contributed to the city's decision to halt the illegal operation.
“It put the city in an awkward situation because we've been trying to help them through the permitting process for almost a year,” said Petaluma Police Lt. Mike Cook. “But when it's being advertised and gaining popularity and growing larger and we know it's happening, we can't just turn away from the safety and water issues.”
Cook said that Petaluma Hills Brewing has technically been operating illegally since it began brewing in September without the proper city permits, wastewater discharge approvals and fire safety upgrades. Portugal & Angola: Sociedade Central de Cervejas expects to launch its Angolan brewery by 2016

Heineken’s Sociedade Central de Cervejas (SCC) expects to start brewing its beers at a new facility in Angola by 2016, Sol reported on December 5.
The company’s CEO, Ronald den Elzen, said its joint Angolan venture with Sodiba is currently constructing a brewery, which is expected to start test-brewing in the first quarter of 2015.
Angola accounts for 60% of SCC total beer exports. The company expects its shipments to Angola to show a 15-20% decline this year, as the volumes have been affected by strikes of port employees, the introduction of a new certification by the Angolan government, and higher customs taxes.
Mr. den Elzen said it would be the first decline the company ever suffered on the Angolan market. “Next year we expect to register double-digit growth,” he added.

The Czech Republic: Budějovický Budvar might appeal the French verdict on the “BUD” designation of origin
|
Czech brewery Budějovický Budvar is considering whether it will file an appeal to the Supreme Court over the verdict of the French Appellate Court that the "BUD" designation of origin, owned by Budvar, is invalid, Budvar's spokesman Petr Samec was quoted as saying by Prague Post on December 5.
The French court ruled that the "BUD" trademark cannot be protected as a designation of origin in France, confirming an earlier verdict of a lower-instance court against that Budvar had appealed, brewing group and Budvar's rival Anheuser-Busch InBev said in a press release on December 5.
The decision strengthens the position in trademarks of Anheuser-Busch InBev in France, the company said.
"The court's verdict has not taken effect yet. We are now analyzing our chances of success in a possible appeal to the Supreme Court with our lawyers," Samec said.
Europe's Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) had granted the registration for the "BUD" trademark in the entire European Union to AB InBev in June already.
It did so after Budvar lost a dispute over the trademark at an EU court in January this year.

Greece: Olympic Brewery to expand in three new markets
|
Greece’s Olympic Brewery SA is expanding its activities in three new markets - Canada, Brazil and Russia - expecting the first beer exports by the start of the new year, Capital.gr reported on December 5.
Yiannis Hitos, chairman and chief executive of the company, speaking to reporters, said Fix Hellas will become the first Greek beer to enter the Russian market, focusing initially in the Moscow region. At the same time, Olympic Brewery will seek to enter the Brazilian market through a local coffee chain.
Olympic Brewery has established presence in 20 countries, including the UK, Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain, China, Cyprus, South Africa, Sweden, Hong Kong and Chile. In 2013, the company signed an agreement to sell its products in all Duty Free Shops in the country.
Olympic Brewery continues implementing its investment programme which envisages the construction of its own brewery factory with a production capacity of 15,000 tons, part of an investment programme for the period 2014-2015. The investment has a budget of around 10 million euros.

Pakistan & India: Pakistan’s Murree Brewery looking to expand worldwide through a partnership in India
|
Pakistan’s premier spirit maker is looking for a partner in India to sell its malt beverage in the neighbouring country and harness international exports from there, as export of alcoholic drinks from Pakistan is banned, Dawn.com reported on December 5.
“We gave a franchise to a company over a year ago but that deal has not really materialised so far,” Sabihur Rehman, special assistant to the chief executive of the Murree Brewery Company, said.
“But we are being approached by many Indian firms and a serious discussion is under way with a large Chandigarh-based distribution company, which wants a brewing franchise.”
Murree Brewery was among the foremost companies to develop partnership in India, taking advantage of a liberalised investment regime approved by the Indian government in July last year.
Under the agreement, Murree Brewery allowed Rahul Chandra of Bangalore-based Elpha Engineering and Project to produce and market its beer in India.
However, Mr Chandra has not been able to make any headway and after waiting for more than a year Murree Brewery has decided to look for another partner.
Although the company also produces vodka, gin and rum, its prime brands are single malt whiskies.
