South Korea: HiteJinro's domestic kirin beer production targets market lead
|
HiteJinro is pushing forward with domestic production of canned products for the Japanese Kirin Brewery’s beer brand ‘Kirin Ichibang,’ which it has previously handled through import and distribution. This move appears to be an attempt to recover market share in the beer sector by directly producing Japanese beer, which has recently gained significant popularity in South Korea, The Chosun Daily reported on September 15.
According to industry sources on the 15th, HiteJinro reported the product—produced at its Jeonju factory in North Jeolla Province—to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety on the 3rd. The product, intended for domestic sales, is in canned form and is understood to have entered a trial production phase. HiteJinro has imported Kirin’s ‘Ichibanshibori’ bottled beer for premium restaurant sales since 2004 and has held exclusive contracts for Kirin’s canned and draft beers since 2011. No domestic production plans for other forms of the product, excluding cans, have been disclosed.
The industry views Kirin’s decision to produce domestically in South Korea as unusual. Belgium & the Netherlands: Royal Swinkels to relocate Palm Brewery’s bottling and keg filling lines from Belgium to the Netherlands

In a beer market under pressure, the Royal Swinkels brewing group aims to utilize its available production capacity more efficiently. That is why the bottling and keg filling lines at the Palm brewery in Steenhuffel are being relocated to the Netherlands, Retail Detail reported on September 16.
Palm NV announced today to the works council its intention to gradually transfer the bottling and keg filling operations in Steenhuffel to existing filling lines within the group. Brewing operations will remain unchanged. The canning line, the distribution center, the commercial activities of Swinkels Belgium, and operations at Rodenbach in Roeselare will also remain unchanged. Royal Swinkels, which also owns beer brands such as Bavaria, Cornet, and La Trappe, reported this in a press release.
According to the company, Royal Swinkels aims to utilize the available production capacity within the group more efficiently and create room for future investments in Belgian brands and growth segments. Several bottling lines are nearing the end of their economic lifespans. The decision could result in the collective layoff of 33 employees out of a total of 147. On Wednesday, the company initiated the statutory information and consultation procedure with employee representatives regarding this matter.

Singapore: Guinness announces the launch of Guinness 0.0 in Singapore

Guinness on Sept 15 announced the launch of Guinness 0.0 in Singapore, marking the first South-east Asian market to introduce the “globally successful” alcohol-free stout, The Straits Times reported.
The company also announced a second collaboration with Singaporean artist Tobyato, which includes a limited-edition jersey with customised patches.
In its statement, Guinness said its new offering has the “same beautifully smooth taste, perfectly balanced flavour, and unique dark colour of Guinness, just without the alcohol”.
Guinness is the official beer of the English Premier League, which kicked off this season on Aug 21.
Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore’s Guinness marketing manager Claire Chan said that the beer’s fan base in Singapore has been growing.
“As Guinness Draught wins over a wider audience, Guinness 0.0 gives people another way to enjoy the unmistakable taste of a Guinness, even on days or occasions when they choose not to drink alcohol,” she said.
The new brew will be available from October at participating pubs, bars and restaurants islandwide, as well as selected FairPrice Finest, Cold Storage and Sheng Siong outlets.
It can also be purchased on major e-commerce platforms.
Fans also have another reason to cheer, whether they may be supporting Manchester United or Liverpool.

Denmark: Non-alcoholic beer sales up by 10.4% across Danish festivals
|
According to new sales data from Carlsberg Denmark, non-alcoholic beer sales increased by 10.4% across Danish festivals from 2025 to 2026. This also showed that sales across the category at these events are now more than three times higher than they were in 2021, The Drinks Business reported on September 17.
Carlsberg Denmark sales director Henrik Fredvig said: “It is interesting to see alcohol-free beer increasingly being chosen in social and celebratory settings, especially at festivals, which in many ways are the ultimate prove point for alcohol-free beverages. When we see growth year after year at festivals, it tells us that alcohol-free beer is no longer something Danes only choose in everyday situations. It has become a natural part of celebrations and social gatherings as well.”
The figures are based on sales across many of Denmark’s largest festivals, including: NorthSide; Folkemødet; Heartland; Copenhell; Tinderbox; Roskilde Festival; Nibe Festival; Gr∅n Concert in eight cities, and many more. The research noted that “together, these events attract more than half a million guests every summer”.
Alcohol-free’s share of total beer sales at festivals has increased by 6% compared to last year, however despite the category being small, it is still seeing rapid growth.

No hops, no beer: heat and drought are hitting hop fields in Austria and Germany, as well as spring barley for malt. Is a beer shortage looming? Farmers and brewers are testing irrigation and switching to winter barley.
Heat, parched soils and significantly smaller hop cones: for many hop farmers in Austria this year's harvest is proving sobering. The Mühlviertel, one of the country's most important hop-growing regions, is particularly hard hit.
"The heat and the drought have taken a heavy toll on us. Some of my plants are completely ruined," says Stefan Hofer, chair of the Mühlviertel hop growers' co-operative, speaking to ORF.
Even the plants that survived the dry spell have not developed as well, he says.
"The others simply haven't been able to form cones in the same way. Everything is about half the size of a normal year."
But the problem does not stop at the Austrian border. In Germany too, one of the world's most important hop producers, increasing aridity is posing major challenges for farmers.
This is particularly evident in Bavaria. The Franconian town of Spalt, together with three other German growing regions, is one of the areas that supply around 40% of the world's hop production.

UK: Strike action announced at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery
|
Strike action by over 100 members of the Unite union is set to hit Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery in an escalating dispute over jobs, Fife Today reported on September 17.
Workers will begin taking strike action on September 28, and, thereafter, specific groups of workers will be taking industrial action until 05.59 on October 15.
Successive days of action by distillation and process controllers, distillery and machine operators, technicians, quality control analysts, process chemists and engineers will be held each day throughout the three week period.
Unite believes the targeted industrial action will bring production to a standstill at Cameronbridge. The distillery is Europe’s largest grain distillery employing around 200 people.
The dispute is based on Diageo’s plans to slash hundreds of jobs across its operations in Scotland with dozens of roles under review at Cameronbridge, as part of global restructuring proposals.
Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, said:
“Unite has repeatedly warned Diageo that there is no justification for slashing hundreds of jobs across its operations when it is raking in hundreds of millions of profit.
“We are backing our members at Cameronbridge all the way in their fight for jobs, pay and conditions.”
