Japan: Four biggest brewers see sales of beer-type beverages fall 3% in August
|
Sales volumes of “beer-type beverages” sold by Japan’s four biggest brewers fell 3% in August from a year earlier, marking the second straight monthly decline and extending a weak summer for the category, according to industry figures published on Sept. 11, Vinetur reported.
The combined total for June through August also fell 3% from the same period in 2025, based on estimates by Asahi, Kirin, Suntory and Sapporo. The data, cited by FNN Prime Online and the Sept. 11 issue of Shuhan News, suggest that demand did not recover during the peak summer drinking season and that buying patterns are beginning to shift ahead of a tax change scheduled for October.
In Japan, “beer-type beverages” is a broad market category that includes regular beer, happoshu and so-called third-category products. Happoshu is a lower-malt beer segment, while third-category drinks are beer-like beverages made under a different tax treatment. The published figures refer to the combined shipment volume estimated by the four major brewers. Absolute shipment volume was not disclosed.
The August decline followed another weak month in July, leaving the market with two straight negative readings during a period that usually benefits from hot weather and higher outdoor consumption. FNN reported that unfavorable weather

The Netherlands: Dutch people now drinking more beer in restaurants, hotels, and cafes
|
People in the Netherlands are now drinking more beer, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, in restaurants, hotels, and cafes. The majority, 73 percent, however, drink most often at home, and 51 percent at friends’ or family’s homes. The findings come from the 2026 National Beer Survey by Nederlandse Brouwers among more than 1,500 adults.
According to the researchers, for many people, drinking beer remains a social activity to do with loved ones. Forty-seven percent of beer drinkers say it brings people together and, similarly, think that drinking it brings people together.
“Beer is so much more than a drink,” said Fred Teeven, chairman of Nederlandse Brouwers. “For many Dutch people, a glass of beer plays a role when people come together: at home with family or friends, at events, or together in the pub.”
When it comes to more people drinking beer when out and about, Udo Delfgou, director of the Koninklijke Horeca Nederland, said that “beer and hospitality belong together. We are proud that this combination is becoming more popular. Beer is evolving fast- from innovations to new tatste experiences. Guests like to taste that from a cold tap.”
Forty-four percent of people aged 18 and older said they drink beer regularly, with Pintsler

Brazil: Beer prices rise again in August
|
Beer prices paid by Brazilian households rose again in August, moving higher even as the country’s broad consumer inflation index declined for the month, Vinetur reported on September 15.
Data published Tuesday by Guia da Cerveja, based on the August IPCA report from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, showed that beer consumed at home increased 0.83% from July. Over the same period, the overall IPCA fell 0.32%. The monthly gap between the two readings was 1.15 percentage points.
The August increase followed a 0.76% rise in July, meaning beer sold for home consumption has now posted two straight monthly gains. The pace also accelerated slightly from the previous month, by 0.07 percentage points.
The figures stand out because they ran against the broader direction of food prices in Brazil. The food and beverages group fell 0.34% in August, while food consumed at home dropped 0.61%. Beer bought in supermarkets and other retail channels moved the other way, rising 0.83% in the same month.
Beer consumed outside the home also became more expensive, though at a slower pace than beer bought for home use. Prices for beer in bars and restaurants rose 0.59% in August. That increase was closer to the

South Korea: Young Koreans say they're drinking less — but they're still buying 'tasty' alcohol
|
At around 9 p.m. Thursday, Hayan-jip in Jung-gu, Seoul, was packed with college students in their 20s. The bar is known for serving "bokso saju" — a mix of bokbunja-ju (Korean black raspberry wine), soju and cider. Its refrigerators were stocked floor to ceiling with red bokbunja-ju, The Herald Business reported on September 13.
Tables were lined with empty bokbunja-ju bottles and pitchers of the blended drink. Sweet, fizzy cocktails had taken the place of the soju and beer typically found at Korean bars. "I prefer sweet, tasty drinks over bitter ones like soju," said a customer in her 20s who gave only her surname, Choi. "Bokso saju is great for chatting with friends."
Young consumers are cutting back on alcohol overall, but they are still opening their wallets for drinks that offer flavor and novelty, according to industry sources. As demand grows for "tasty alcohol" to be enjoyed casually rather than purely to get drunk, beverage makers have been rolling out a wave of fruit- and sparkling-based products.
Hite Jinro's Terra Sparkling, launched last month, is a prime example. The fruit-infused sparkling drink uses white wine as its base and is designed to deliver a refreshing, crisp taste. It sold 2.8 million

Poland: Most Poles oppose treating non-alcoholic beer like alcoholic beverages
|
Most Poles oppose treating non-alcoholic beer like alcoholic beverages, according to a survey commissioned by industry group Browary Polskie.
Some 71% of respondents oppose a ban on sales of alcohol-free beer, while 57% believe its advertising should remain legal.
Consumers increasingly view 0.0% beer as an alternative to alcohol, with 61.5% calling it a substitute for regular beer and 52.3% saying it can help reduce alcohol consumption. The category is also outperforming the broader beer market. Sales of non-alcoholic beer rose 16.2% y/y in H1 2026, while alcoholic beer sales fell 11.2%.
The industry argues that tighter restrictions could slow a category aligned with NoLo and health-conscious consumption trends.

South Korea: Whiskey market shrinks in volume with focus shifting to premium bottles
|
South Korean whiskey consumption is being reshaped toward buying "one solid bottle with the money for two." Imports of mid-to-low-priced blended products that fueled the highball craze have plummeted, while demand for single malts aged 15 years or more and limited-edition whiskeys remains steady, prompting liquor companies to significantly expand their premium lineup supply, BiGo Finance reported on September 11.
According to the liquor industry on the 11th, Scottish single malt whiskey GlenDronach unveiled its first-ever dedicated gift set for its 15-year-aged product ahead of this year's Chuseok holiday. The company had previously offered packaging with dedicated glasses only for its 12-year product, but as demand grew, it secured additional supply for the South Korean market and newly designed a Chuseok gift configuration accordingly.
A Brown-Forman Korea representative said, "As purchase demand for GlenDronach 15-year has increased, we secured more volume for South Korea this year and planned the Chuseok gift set package to match."
GlenDronach is also expanding domestic supply of premium limited editions to mark the distillery's 200th anniversary this year. It has imported 3,000 bottles of the 14-year-aged limited edition "Boynsmill House Edition," released to commemorate the bicentennial.
Other liquor companies are also successively launching products targeting South Korean premium demand.

USA & Ireland: American whiskey makers applaud easing of Irish tariffs
|
Shares of American distillers Brown-Forman, Constellation Brands, and MGP Ingredients were trending higher on September 14 in the wake of President Trump’s announcement to reverse the 10% tax on imported Irish whiskey, Seeking Alpha reported.
At the close of this weekend’s Irish Open golf tournament and ahead of the holiday season, Trump said, “On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off.” The timing of the action, however, was not discussed.
The tariff was lowered from 15% to 10% in July. In April, the president lifted the tariff on certain UK whiskeys, including those produced in Scotland and Northern Ireland, leaving the Republic of Ireland with a 10% export tariff on whiskey shipped to the U.S. According to the Irish Whiskey Association, the U.S. represents roughly 30% of Irish whiskey exports.
By opening U.S. trade to imports from the Republic of Ireland, U.S. distillers can now enjoy reciprocal exports into Ireland. Accordingly, shares of U.S. distillers lurched higher at the September 14th open, although have surrendered some of the opening gains.
Brown-Forman’s American whiskey and bourbon brands include Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, and Coopers’ Craft. Non-U.S. brands include Benriach, Slane, Glenglassaugh, and Glendronach.

UK: English Whisky secures protected Geographical Indication status
|
English Whisky has secured protected Geographical Indication status, establishing rules governing where and how spirits carrying the name can be produced, The Drinks Business reported on September 14.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed on 11 September that “English Whisky” and “English Whiskey” are now protected names under the UK Spirit Drinks Geographical Indications Scheme. It means national whiskies from all four UK nations now have legal protection, with English Whisky joining Scotch Whisky, Single Malt Welsh Whisky and Irish Whiskey.
The English Whisky Guild (EWG) led the application after more than six years of work with producers and Defra. It was submitted in February 2022, published for opposition in February 2025 and subsequently refined through consultation before receiving final approval.
Morag Garden, chief executive of the English Whisky Guild, said: “Securing GI status is a landmark achievement for English Whisky and recognition of the quality and innovation across our growing industry.
“We are grateful to DEFRA and to everyone who contributed to this collaborative effort. This milestone will support future growth and international recognition for English Whisky.”
The new GI sets out a series of production requirements for distillers who choose to use the protected name. English Whisky must use cereal
