Japan: Beer, quasi-beer sales shrink by 11% in February
|
Sales of beer and quasi-beer products in Japan shrank by 11 pct from a year earlier in February, estimates based on four major brewers' data showed on March 11.
The decline in sales volume came after the year-before rise due to a last-minute demand spike ahead of industry-wide price hikes. Another negative factor was heavy snowfalls in some regions, which led many people to refrain from going out.
In February, sales fell 12 pct from a year before for beer and beer-like drinks for household use and 8 pct for commercial use.
An industry official said that sales for commercial use were sluggish especially in the Tokyo metropolitan area, possibly reflecting a decrease in Chinese tourists.
By product, sales declined 5 pct for beer, 12 pct for "happoushu" quasi beer and 20 pct for so-called third segment beer-like beverages.

The Czech Republic: Plzeňský Prazdroj sells less beer in 2025
|
The Czech brewing group Plzeňský Prazdroj sold a total of 7.17 million hectolitres of beer in the Czech Republic last year. This represents a decline of around two per cent compared with the previous year. The company cites the unusually cool weather during the summer season as well as the longer-term decline in beer consumption in the country as the main reasons, the Prague Daily News reported on March 13.
According to the company, last year was among the coldest of the past ten years. The summer months in particular are traditionally considered the most important sales period for breweries and hospitality businesses. Lower temperatures than usual therefore noticeably weighed on sales. Outdoor hospitality venues were also unable to operate in many places to the extent that is normally the case.
Sales of draught beer declined particularly sharply. In pubs and restaurants, sales fell by four per cent, while in retail the decline was around one per cent. Nevertheless, the share of beer consumed in bars and restaurants remains above the average of the Czech market for the Pilsen brewer. More than 34 per cent of production continues to be sold in the hospitality sector, while the share in the overall market

Japan: Asahi to recommence shipments of all products next month
|
Asahi Breweries is set to recommence shipments of all products next month (7 April), almost six months after a cyber-attack on its parent company forced it to stopper shipments and production, the Drinks Business reported on March 11.
After the cyber breach and subsequent system disruption on Asahi Group Holdings on 29 September 2025, the Japanese drinks group was forced to restrict shipments, while production at the company’s domestic factories also stalled.
Now, shipments in the alcoholic drink category have been resumed for “almost all products”, Asahi Group Holdings announced on Tuesday. The company has already resumed shipments of non-alcoholic drinks and food products.
On Tuesday, the beer goliath reported that it had seen profits nosedive, as repercussions from the attack. It announced a consolidated net profit of ¥102.8 billion (£483 million) for January-September 2025, a 26.2% drop from the previous year.
Core operating profit fell by 5.5%, with operating profit down 18%. Revenue dropped 0.6%.
Speaking of the results, Asahi Group Holdings president and group CEO Atsushi Katsuki said: “In Europe and Asia Pacific, we are making steady progress on initiatives to drive growth, including improved unit sales prices and earnings structure reforms.
“In Japan and East Asia, while the impact of the system

Vietnam: Gen Z turns down alcohol, pushes back against social drinking pressures
|
Every year during the Tet holidays Thanh Tri fends off a barrage of drinking invitations from older relatives, holding firm to his decision to remain a teetotaler.
The 26-year-old in Can Tho Province works as a freelance communications consultant in Ho Chi Minh City.
He returned home ahead of Tet and was swept into a series of gatherings, from year-end parties to family visits. Beer and liquor typically flow on such occasions, with elders raising the first toast and often expecting younger people to follow.
When asked to drink, Tri would often say he had a stomach problem and ask for soda instead. Despite this, glasses of beer would still be handed to him with people exhorting him to drink. "Refusing to drink alcohol is very hard but I do not want to drink out of obligation like I used to," he says.
He says he has disliked alcohol for years.
He grew up with a father who was a heavy drinker, and early in his life drank out of politeness and to maintain relationships.
After drinking too much at a year-end party in 2024 he was sick for two days and unable to work during a busy period. He has since abstained completely from alcohol.

Thailand: ThaiBev notifies retailers of beer price adjustments
|
Signs of higher prices in 2026 are emerging, with Thai Beverage Plc (ThaiBev) notifying retailers—particularly agents who play a key role in distribution—of beer price adjustments, the Nation Thailand reported on March 11..
The increases begin with Chang Cold Brew. For the 490ml tall can, the price per case has risen to 589 baht, up 20 baht from 569 baht. The 320ml small bottle case has increased to 826 baht, up 8 baht from 818 baht, while the 620ml large bottle case has moved to 683 baht, up 8 baht from 675 baht.
There were also reports that Chang Classic—including tall cans, small bottles and large bottles—has not yet been adjusted, but is expected to rise after March 15, 2026, with the increase estimated at around 8-15 baht per case.
A spot check at 7-Eleven on March 10, 2026 showed the following Chang retail prices: Chang Cold Brew 490ml can at 55 baht, Chang Cold Brew 620ml glass bottle at 62 baht, Chang Classic 490ml can at 53 baht, and Chang Classic 620ml glass bottle at 59 baht.
The move by a major beer brand is expected to ripple through consumption patterns and competition in Thailand’s beer market, prompting a response from a key

Canada: Craft breweries must find ways to adapt to declining consumption
|
As consumers turn away from craft beer and microbreweries close, one craft brewer says he still optimistic about his industry, the Capital Current reported on March 12.
But Josh McJannett, co-founder of Dominion City Brewing Company, says smaller breweries have to adapt to a rapidly changing and challenging business environment.
“At this point, we’re actually competing with a much wider swath of the market, … non-alcoholic beverages, canned cocktails, THC beverages,” McJannett said.
“People’s menu of options is just so much larger than it’s ever been.”
According to data from Statistics Canada, the volume of beer sales in 2024-2025 fell 3.79 per cent from the previous year. This data accounts for all beers, imported and domestic.
Data compiled from LCBO annual reports also shows craft beer sales through LCBO stores have been mostly declining since 2021, though the volume of craft beer sold in 2025 was up about 1.6 per cent compared with 2024. And multiple craft brewer closures have been reported across Ontario.
McJannett says his brewery has responded to the trends, including the launch of City Seltzer, a subsidiary of Dominion City Brewing Company.
“I think that was an important moment for us to realize that having a non-alcoholic product, something different than beer,

Cambodia: Hanuman Beverages announces plans to expand into the United States, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand
|
Cambodian brewer Hanuman Beverages has announced plans to expand into the United States, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to position Cambodian-made beverages in major international markets, the Asia Brewers Network reported on March 9.
The move represents one of the most ambitious export pushes yet by a Cambodian beverage producer and reflects the rapid growth of Hanuman Beverages since its emergence in the Kingdom’s premium beer segment in 2021.
Based in Phnom Penh, Hanuman Beverages was founded by Cambodian entrepreneur Khieu Sarsileap, who serves as the company’s chairwoman. Since its launch, the company has sought to build a modern Cambodian beverage brand capable of competing with international products while highlighting local cultural identity. Hanuman’s operations combine modern brewing technology with a strong emphasis on branding inspired by Southeast Asian mythology and Khmer cultural symbolism.
The company’s flagship product, Hanuman Premium Lager, has become one of the country’s most recognisable premium local beers and has since expanded its portfolio with variants including Hanuman Black, a dark beer, and Neak Classic Asian Lager.
The company has already attracted significant regional attention through its marketing partnerships. In May 2024, Hanuman Beverages signed Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao as
