Germany: Radeberger Gruppe closes Hövels Hausbrauerei in Dortmund
|
The Radeberger Gruppe has closed the small brewing facility of the traditional Hövels Hausbrauerei in Dortmund, relocating production to the nearby industrial brewery operated by Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB) at the Steigerstraße site.
According to a report by WAZ Dortmund, brewing operations in the house brewery beneath the Hövels restaurant at the Hoher Wall ceased in February 2026 and will fully phase out during March. The move marks the end of the last external brewing location previously used by the Dortmund brewing group.
Despite the relocation, the company stated that consumers will not notice any changes. Production volumes, bottle appearance, and the original recipe of the beer will remain unchanged. The Hövels brand will continue to be brewed at the large-scale DAB facility in Dortmund’s Nordstadt district. The brewmaster from the house brewery is also expected to move to the Steigerstraße site. In addition, the house beers Urtrüb and Schwarzes, brewed for the Wenkers am Markt restaurant, will now also be produced at that facility.
Uwe Helmich, managing director of the Dortmund breweries, explained that the decision was driven primarily by economic considerations. Operating a very small brewing installation had become increasingly costly, particularly following significant cost increases in recent years. According to Helmich,

South Korea: Low- and non-alcoholic beverages segments experiencing standalone growth in South Korea
|
The "health pleasure" trend prioritizing wellness is reshaping South Korea's alcoholic beverage market. As drinking less becomes more common, liquor makers are targeting consumers with low-alcohol and non-alcoholic products. While domestic alcohol consumption has declined markedly over the past decade, low-alcohol and non-alcoholic segments are experiencing standalone growth, the Seoul Economic Daily reported on March 9.
Light and low-alcohol beers are attracting more consumers, according to industry sources on the 9th. Emart reported that sales of "light" beers with reduced calories and sugars jumped 32% year-on-year in 2024. Non-alcoholic and alcohol-free beer sales also rose 21% during the same period. This contrasts sharply with overall beer sales, including domestic and imported brands, which fell 6.4%.
Light beers are defined as those containing 30 kcal or less per 100ml. Cass Light dominates the domestic light beer market. Since its 2010 launch, the product has maintained its market leadership through marketing aligned with the health-conscious trend. Cass Light contains approximately 33% fewer calories than Cass Fresh. Hite Jinro launched Terra Light, also with 33% fewer calories, to compete directly with Cass.
Companies are also accelerating competition in low-alcohol and non-alcoholic categories. Lotte Chilsung Beverage lowered the alcohol content of "Chum Churum" from 16.5% to 16%

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries pilots local barley farming
|
Nigerian Breweries Plc has successfully cultivated locally grown barley as part of efforts to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported malted barley and strengthen domestic agricultural supply chains, MSME Africa reported on March 9.
The company showcased the results during its Maltina Barley Field Day in Ringim, presenting progress from the pilot phase of the Maltina Barley Programme, an initiative designed to build a sustainable barley value chain while creating new opportunities for smallholder farmers in Northern Nigeria.
Nigeria currently imports about 200,000 tonnes of malted barley annually for brewing and beverage production. Through the pilot programme, more than 1,000 smallholder farmers cultivated barley this season, with expected output exceeding 1,000 tonnes.
Participating farmers received quality seeds, fertilisers and mechanised services through partnerships with OCP Africa and Hello Tractor. The brewer also guaranteed off-take for the harvested crop to ensure stable market access for farmers.
The project followed years of research and development carried out in partnership with Lake Chad Research Institute and Secobra Research to adapt barley to the soil and climate conditions of Northern Nigeria. Three climate-adapted varieties — Traveller, Explorer and Prunella were officially registered in 2024 by the National Agricultural Seed Council.

India: IndoBevs setting up a greenfield malt distillery in Uttar Pradesh
|
Alcobev firm IndoBevs is setting up a 40-acre greenfield malt distillery in Muzaffarnagar with an investment of about Rs 200 crore over the next two years, as the company doubles down on the premium whisky segment and builds long-term capacity for single malt production, Sameer Mahandru, Managing Director, IndoBevs, told ETRetail.
The upcoming facility will be developed as a resort-style ecosystem and is expected to have a peak production capacity of 12,000 litres per day, though actual output will depend on the maturation and ageing cycles typical of single malt whisky. The project is expected to be commercially operational in around four years.
“Whisky requires significant upfront capital and long maturation cycles. The malt distillery is part of our long-term strategy to build a strong premium whisky portfolio,” Mahandru said.
The Uttar Pradesh Excise Department recently announced that three new malt units, including IndoBevs’, have received licenses, making the project part of the state’s broader push to expand whisky production infrastructure.
Founded in 2007 as Indospirit, the company initially operated as a distribution partner for global alcobev majors including Pernod Ricard, Diageo, and Bacardi, building deep expertise in India’s complex regulatory frameworks, state-wise distribution networks and last-mile retail connectivity.
After nearly a decade in distribution,
