USA, TX: Pour Choices Brewing Co. moving ahead in Fredericksburg
|
Despite tumultuous times for Texas’ craft-beer industry, a new project mixing brews and bicycles is moving ahead in the Hill Country town of Fredericksburg, San Antonio Current reported on October 22.
Pour Choices Brewing Co., a $2.8 million craft brewery 68 miles northwest of San Antonio is under construction with a projected opening date next April, according to owner Rick LaPlante.
The nearly 9,000-square-foot brewery at 1505 S. Creek St. in Fredericksburg will include production facilities along with an indoor tasting room, outdoor seating, an outdoor bar, a performance stage and a bike repair shop.
Fredericksburg has become a popular spot for the Hill Country cycling community, drawing solo riders and teams preparing for races and treks. LaPlante told the Current he wants to connect with cyclists and make them part of the brewery’s core clientele.
“We’re really focused on having the community come into our space,” he said. “We really want it to be that sort of gathering place, almost like the coffee shop. Where you can come in, sit down, work, have a meeting, whatever you need to do.”
LaPlante is partnering with Hill Country Bike Works to open the brewery’s bike shop. The aim is to maintain a small, self-service site where

USA, NJ: Plans in the works for construction of Bay Ave. Brewery in Somers Point
|
Plans are in the works for construction of Bay Ave. Brewery at 435 Bay Ave., the empty lot on the corner of Maryland Avenue in Somers Point, the Ocean City Sentinel reported on October 22.
Longtime summer residents of Ocean City, cousins Tom Dooner and Brian Murphy are behind the project.
Both grew up in Pennsylvania but had family homes on the island. Dooner, 32, not lives in Pleasantville while Murphy, 33, lives in Linwood.
Both have worked as professional brewers since earning their graduate-level certification from the University of the Sciences in 2020.
“We both graduated from that program and started working in the industry,” Dooner said.
He worked in the quality control lab for Cape May Brewing Co. and at Dock Street Brewery in Philadelphia.
Murphy worked at King’s Road Brewing Co. in Haddonfield and Brewery ARS in South Philadelphia.
They both worked locally throughout their youth, with Dooner serving on the Ocean City Beach Patrol from 2013 to 2020 and Murphy working at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House for about a decade.
“I worked from dishwasher all the way up to the pancake grill,” he said.
Their love of beer started long ago, as both were home brewers for years before they earned their certificates.

USA, MN: Mana Brewing opens new craft brewpub in the Twin Cities
|
A new craft brewpub opened in the Twin Cities this week, promising to be a destination for "divine beer, divine pizza and a divine time", Bring Me The News reported on October 21.
Mana Brewing, which debuted in downtown Shakopee in 2022, has expanded to Oakdale - a welcome arrival as it's the city's only brewery.
Mana Brewing guests can enjoy craft beers, specialty cocktails and plenty of cozy brewpub fare, including giant Bavarian pretzels and stone-fired pizzas.
"We’ve wanted a brewery in Oakdale for so long, and today it’s happening," Oakdale Mayor Kevin Zabel celebrated on Facebook. "Beyond excited to have Mana here! They truly have something for everyone: full kitchen menu, cocktails, mocktails, games, and more!"
The brewery and taproom is located on the first floor of the new Norhart Oakdale apartments at 7600 2nd St.

USA: Kirin puts Four Roses whiskey line up for sale
|
Japan’s Kirin Holdings has put its Kentucky bourbon brand Four Roses up for sale at a price of $1bn, as the brewer pivots away from the struggling spirits sector towards healthcare, The Financial Times reported on October 24.
Kirin has been working with advisers from UBS to test interest from potential buyers in recent weeks, with first-round bids expected as early as next month, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The sale process comes during a tough period for brewers and distillers as they contend with changing habits among younger consumers, who are reducing alcohol consumption. In Japan, beer consumption has dropped, hurting Kirin’s core product.
Kirin and UBS declined to comment.
Kirin, a Japanese conglomerate that generates more than $15bn a year in sales and produces everything from lager and spirits to rare diseases medicines under its Kyowa Kirin subsidiary, has owned Four Roses since 2002.
Tracing its origins back to 1888, Four Roses is produced in a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, in the heart of so-called Bourbon Country. Four Roses generated about $70mn in adjusted earnings annually and was expected to fetch as much as $1bn, the people said.
After first entering the pharmaceutical sector in the 1980s, Kirin has accelerated its

UK: Scotch Whisky Association urges for a multi-year freeze on spirits duty
|
The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is urging the UK Chancellor to deliver a multi-year freeze on spirits duty in the upcoming Autumn Budget. The trade body highlighted mounting regulatory costs, unstable global trading conditions, and the negative impact of recent tax hikes on both Treasury revenue and the hospitality sector, The Whiskey Wash reported on October 20.
Duty increases over the past two years have increased the tax burden on an average-priced bottle of scotch, with a minimum of £12 of every bottle sold in the UK now claimed by tax.
Despite these hikes, the SWA reports that excise duty from spirits has flatlined and fallen £600 million short of Treasury forecasts over the past two years.
The trade body also emphasized the importance of spirits to the UK’s on-trade. Spirits account for 15% of alcohol servings in pubs, bars, and restaurants but generate 38% of their alcohol profits.
This call to protect a vital income stream for hospitality businesses follows recent UKHospitality research showing nearly 84,000 jobs have been lost in the sector since the last budget.
The industry also faces external pressures, including 10% U.S. tariffs that cost the sector nearly £4 million each week. The combination of domestic duty and tariffs has
