Brewery news India: United Breweries commences production of Kingfisher beer in Adhra Pradesh
United Breweries Limited (UBL), part of the HEINEKEN Company, has commenced production of its flagship brand Kingfisher at the recently leased Ilios Brewery in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, The Hindu Business Line reported on September 1.

Ilios Brewery has a monthly capacity of up to 4.5 lakh cases of beer, complementing the 12-lakh case capacity of the Srikakulam brewery to meet the region’s growing demand for high-quality beer.

Vivek Gupta, MD & CEO, United Breweries said “The commencement of production at Ilios Brewery reiterates our commitment to sustainable growth in Andhra Pradesh. By localizing production, strengthening our supply chain and creating long-term value for the local ecosystem, we are well positioned to meet rising consumer demand. We will ensure Kingfisher lovers are consistently well served. We remain committed to boosting State revenue, fostering sustainable growth and accelerating industrial momentum.”

The company shared that Ilios Brewery supports over 500 livelihoods through direct and indirect employment, which also includes generating opportunities across ancillary industries such as packaging, logistics and distribution.

Brewery news Japan: Suntory CEO resigns after possible purchase of illegal supplements
Suntory Holdings chairman and CEO Takeshi Niinami has resigned following allegations he purchased supplements containing illegal substances, the company confirmed on September 2.

Niinami, 66, one of Japan’s most prominent and outspoken business leaders, said he believed the supplements he bought were legal. He has often served as the face of corporate Japan and frequently appeared on CNN.

Investigators had previously searched Niinami’s Tokyo home on suspicion he had received products containing cannabis-derived substances from an acquaintance overseas, according to public broadcaster NHK, citing investigative officials.

Police believe the items may have contained THC and are examining whether Niinami knew the substance is strictly regulated in Japan.

Niinami had informed colleagues on August 22 that he was under police investigation, Suntory President Nobuhiro Torii and Vice President Kenji Yamada told a press conference on September 2. On September 1, Niinami offered to step down, citing personal reasons. The company accepted his resignation effective that same day.

Niinami had told the company that the investigation concerned supplements he had purchased under the assumption they were legal, according to Torii.

CNN has reached out to Suntory and the Fukuoka Prefectural Police for comment.

Suntory is one of Japan’s most recognizable drinks brands, selling beer, whisky, sports and energy drinks. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario premier vows to ‘hurt’ Diageo sales over plant closure plan
The premier of Ontario on September 2 said he would "hurt" Diageo after the world's largest spirits maker announced plans to close a facility in Canada's most populous province, which buys the company's products to sell in its liquor stores, Reuters reported.

Diageo said last week that it would shut its Crown Royal whisky bottling plant in Ontario by February 2026, as part of efforts to improve its North American supply chain.

"You guys are about as dumb as a bag of hammers for doing this," said Premier Doug Ford, noting that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario bought C$740 million($540 million) worth of Diageo products a year. He said 180 jobs would be lost in the plant closure.

"A message to the CEO ... you hurt my people, I'm going to hurt you. You're going to feel the pain in February," Ford told a press conference and proceeded to pour a large bottle of Crown Royal onto the ground.

"I think everyone else should do the same thing. Start supporting companies that make whisky here," he said.

Ford, a famously combative politician, led his Progressive Conservatives to victory in 2018 and easily won reelection in 2022. In March, the LCBO banned sales of U.S. ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: AB InBev and Anadolu Efes Russian JV renamed by Moscow-appointed management
The Russian joint venture between AB InBev and Anadolu Efes of Turkey has changed its name and logo following a decision by Moscow-appointed management, belganewsagency.eu reported on September 2.

According to Anadolu Efes, this does not affect the company's ownership structure or legal status, and it has been under temporary state control since December 2023.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the new name, Napitki Vmeste ('Drinks Together'), is intended to reflect 'deep integration into the Russian economy'. The management team has confirmed that operations and obligations to the state, partners, and employees will continue unaffected.

AB InBev, which holds a 50 per cent non-controlling stake in the venture, has been trying to exit the Russian market since the invasion of Ukraine. However, two attempts to transfer its share to Anadolu Efes have been blocked by Russian authorities. The brewer also owns just under a quarter of Anadolu Efes itself.

Brewery news Latvia: Leading brewers Valmiermuižas Alus and Cēsu Alus to join forces
Two of the leading breweries in Latvia's northern Vidzeme region are to join forces, LSM reported on September 2.

In order to continue developing, craft brewery SIA Valmiermuižas Alus will join forces with the larger AS Cēsu Alus, the company said. Cēsu Alus is in turn owned by major Finnish brewer Olvi which also owns breweries in Estonia and Lithuania.

Valmiermuižas Alus founder and majority owner Aigars Ruņģis explained that although the company's performance is good, in the long term, development is possible only together with a larger beer producer.

"Although this is the best year in history for Valmiermuiža beer, we are also aware that we operate in a business environment that is unfriendly to small and independent brewers in Europe, as a result of which Latvia ranked last in the European Union in terms of beer production volume last year. This significantly hinders the ability of Latvian brewers to grow, invest and compete on a European scale," Ruņģis said.

He has previously criticized Latvia's regulation of independent brewers, stating that it is almost impossible for them to develop.

The claim that Latvia ranked last in the EU in beer production (among countries for which data are available) is supported by the most recent ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Asahi to soon buy barley from growers with data on gain's sustainability
Australia's largest beer business will soon buy barley from farmers who have gathered data about how sustainably their grain was produced, ABC.net reported on September 3.

A group of grain growers from northern New South Wales has agreed to provide Japanese-owned Asahi with information relating to 21 environment, social and governance (ESG) metrics about how the crop, currently in the ground, was produced and harvested.

The reporting is expected to include verifiable data relating to farm emissions, crop rotations, area or protected habitat, local spend and compliance with modern slavery regulations.

Regional head of procurement at Asahi, David Engel said shareholders, consumers and customers were seeking more information about how their drinks were produced.

"This will be the first time growers are actually measuring on-farm metrics to this level and actually able to report on what's happening, so we're really excited about what we'll learn," Mr Engel said.

"I'm sure we'll learn things that that we didn't expect, and we'll have to course correct and pivot on what we need to focus on, but that's the beauty of learning."

Australian farmers are forecast to harvest close to 55 million tonnes of winter crop this year.

Moree farmer Stuart Tighe said the growers would produce malting barley for ...More info on site
