World: HSBC lowers Carlsberg to ‘hold’ following weaker-than-expected first-quarter results
|
Carlsberg downgraded its outlook for fiscal year 2025, prompting analysts at HSBC to lower its rating to “hold” from “buy” and reduce its target price to DKK910 from DKK940, in a note dated May 7, Investing.com reported.
The downgrade follows weaker-than-expected first-quarter results, primarily driven by underperformance in key markets such as Kazakhstan and Vietnam, alongside ongoing challenges in Asia.
In Q1, Carlsberg reported a 1.5% decline in organic sales, worse than the consensus estimate of a 0.8% decline.
Volumes fell 2.3%, compared to the expected 1.9% drop. The results were mainly affected by a tough comparison with last year’s inventory buildup in Kazakhstan and continued market share losses in Vietnam due to heightened competition. Weakness in Laos and Cambodia further contributed to the poor performance.
While there was growth in China, with a 1.5% revenue increase driven by premium products, Carlsberg’s outlook for the region remains cautious.
The company expects a 2% decline in the Chinese market for the year, a slight improvement over last year’s 5% drop.
In India, Carlsberg continued strong growth, but the broader Asian outlook remained weak. In Western Europe, Carlsberg saw a 2.9% volume decline, better than the consensus expectation of 4.2%.

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd does not expect any direct impact from US tariffs due to its lack of exports to the United States, but is cautions that potentially weaker consumer sentiment could affect its business, The Star reported on May 8.
Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini said since the group does not export to the United States, it will not be directly affected by the tariffs.
“However, tariffs create uncertainty and fear, which can change consumer behaviour. Consumers may choose to spend less and save more for rainy days.
“Currently, we still do not know what the impact from the tariffs will be,” he told the media after the group’s 55th AGM yesterday.
Clini said the group remains cautious in its outlook as it continues to navigate a challenging macroeconomic environment marked by continued inflationary pressures, high interest rates, currency fluctuations and external headwinds such as the recent US tariff measures.
“However, we will continue to stick to our Accelerate SAIL growth strategy, which is basically about building on innovation and strong marketing to gain market share.
“There is no need for us to change our direction,” he stressed.

Germany: Oettinger brewery becomes target of a cyber attack
|
German brewery Oettinger has become the target of a cyber attack in a move that has allegedly put confidential documents at stake, The Drinks Business reported on May 7.
According to Cybernews analysis, the ransomware crew calling itself Ransom House has claimed it has hit Oettinger which sees its Bavarian beers exported to many markets. The gang has also alleged that it is now in possession of highly sensitive data. In a post seen on its dark web extortion site, the gang has dropped the following message:
“Dear management of Oettinger Brauerei and Pia Kollmar. We are sure that you are not interested in your confidential data to be leaked or sold to a third party. We highly advise you to contact us.”
Ransomware experts have highlighted how sharing a warning on a gang’s website is a common technique used by cybercriminals to coerce organisations into paying a ransom. The attackers’ post went live on 5 May, but the gang has reportedly indicated that it has been in possession of encrypted data from the brewery since 19 April.

The Netherlands: Heineken taking legal action against Jumbo supermarket chain
|
Brewing giant Heineken is taking legal action against the Jumbo supermarket chain over its “boycott” of the company’s products, DutchNews.nl reported on May 9.
Jumbo is part of the Everest purchasing combine, which has been embroiled in difficult negotiations with Heineken about the cost of its beers, which are much cheaper for supermarkets in Germany and France.
The supermarket argues that it is not buying from Heineken because of the “bizarre” prices the brewer has been charging in the Netherlands since the start of this year.
Online supermarket Picnic is also part of the Everest combine, and its bill from Heineken is lower than Jumbo’s, lawyer Jeroen Bedaux told the court on Thursday.
Heineken argues that Picnic has no physical stores and therefore its costs are lower “in terms of promotion and the like”. The beer is cheaper in other countries because of local conditions, Heineken lawyer Thom Beukers said.
“Heineken has 50 breweries in Europe and there are differences in pay, raw material prices and rules everywhere,” Beukers is quoted as saying.
Jumbo, which has been working with Heineken for 60 years, told the court that it had not stopped buying Heineken beer altogether, but had only reduced its orders.

Ethiopia: BGI-Ethiopia appoints new Chief Executive Officer
|
BGI-Ethiopia, a subsidiary of the Castel Group, announced the appointment of Pierre-Emmanuel Medard as its new Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Monitor reported on May 8.
Emanuel is put in charge the largest brewery in the East African nation, replacing Herve Milhade. Milhade retired from Castel Group after serving as the BGI-Ethiopia CEO for the last three and half years.
In a statement on May 8, BGI-Ethiopia says Emmanuel brings over 25 years of industry expertise as he takes the helm starting May 1, 2025.
Most recently, Emmanuel served as CEO of Castel’s operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where “he delivered outstanding results” across the beverage portfolio.
A material engineer by profession, Emmanuel joined the Castel Group a decade ago and held senior leadership roles in Ivory Coast and served as CEO of Castel’s subsidiaries in Gambia and Senegal.
“I’m honored to join BGI-Ethiopia at such an exciting time,” the new CEO says.
“Together with our employees and stakeholders, I look forward to continuing to build on the company’s success and exploring new ways to create lasting value,” Emmanuel added.

USA: AMBA launches project aimed at quantifying the environmental impact of barley farming
|
The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) recently noted it has officially launched its Baselining Barley project — the first industry-wide collaboration aimed at quantifying the environmental impact of barley farming, Craft Brewing Business reported on May 8.
This matters to brewers. Barley is more than an ingredient; it’s the backbone of beer, and right now production is at an all-time low. So the industry is working to ensure that backbone is strong, sustainable, and measurable.
“Mitigating our businesses’ contribution to a changing climate calls for close collaboration with experts across our value chain. Leveraging that expertise requires a shared understanding and a common language for the work ahead. The project AMBA is leading will provide just that, a clear, empirical understanding of where we are today, where our greatest opportunities exist, and a shared calculus for understanding the implications of different solutions,” Walker Modic, Environmental Programs Director, New Belgium-Bell’s Brewing, said.
