Brewery news USA, MI: Barrister Brewing Company holds ribbon-cutting ceremony in Owosso
A new brewery in Owosso held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, May 6, celebrating its grand opening, ABC12 reported.

Barrister Brewing Company is a law-themed brew house.

There are five owners altogether, and some of them worked together in local law offices, leading to the name.

One of the owners says the environment provides a relaxing atmosphere.

"It is a chill vibe, no TVs, no jukebox or anything like that," says co-owner Dan Nees. "It is a place to come on down, enjoy some good beer, some good food and some good company. We are hoping this is a place where a lot of people can get to know each other."

There are new brew tanks where they brew their own beer and will have rotating taps.

Brewery news USA, MN: HammerHeart Brewery moving their business to Ely
Two years and seven months ago, HammerHeart Brewery announced they would be moving their business from Lino Lakes to Ely, The Ely Echo reported on May 3.

After trials and tribulations, and many revisions to their plan, HammerHeart Brewery has finally begun producing their famed smoked beer in town.

There were limited options for HammerHeart to house their operation in Ely, but eventually found their home behind Spirit of the Wilderness Outfitters.

“There were not a ton of options for a commercial-level building in Ely where we could build a brewery. It needs to be industrial,” said Nathanial Chapman, co-owner of the brewery.

To accommodate their equipment, Chapman looked for a building in town with at least 15-foot-tall ceilings, which is rare.

They originally put an offer in for the building where the Ely Area Ambulance Service is located, but it fell through.

“When you need the ceilings to be 15 feet high, it makes it difficult and limits what you can buy,” he said.

They eventually found the property behind Spirit of the Wilderness and decided it was the right fit for their brewery.

The space needed lots of work, however.

“The building was kind of just a raw space. There was a lot of demolition we had ...More info on site

The business will be open 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 3 to 10 p.m. on Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

1840 Brewing Company crafts "high quality ales, lagers, sours, and stouts with a focus on barrel aging and blending," according to its website.

According to company officials, the business will be adding coffee and food service in the future, and the hours will adjust accordingly. Right now, just the taproom and snack service are open. The restaurant is planned to open in a month with the coffee shop opening after.

Right now, the plan is to brew and craft all beer in Bay View and transport the products to West Bend. 1840 Brewing Company owner Kyle Vetter said in the future, the plan is to craft beer in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: HighGrain Brewing Co. launches second location in Cincinnati
Silverton's HighGrain Brewing Co. has officially opened its second location, in a former Springfield Township bowling alley, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported on May 3.

HighGrain held its grand opening at the former Brentwood Bowl at 9176 Winton Road on May 3. The brewery bought the 50,000-square-foot space in 2022, after the bowling alley closed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The $4 million project transformed the former bowling alley into 25,000 square feet of production space, alongside a taproom that can accommodate 300 people, a full bar, a private event space and a large kitchen. The outdoor area has a covered patio that links to green space and a beer garden with rentable space for outdoor events.

The brewery is partnering with Revel OTR Urban Winery and La Terza Artisan Coffee Roasterie to make products from both companies available in its taproom.

HighGrain was founded in 2019 by Josh Jansen, Matt Utter and Brian Liscano. It ranks as the region's 10th-largest brewery, according to Business Courier research.

The brewery worked with Dayton-based Alt Architecture on the design of the building, and Furlong Building handled the general contracting work.

Brewery news USA, ME: Mason's Brewing Company expands to Machias
Fans of Maine-made brews and pub grub are in luck - Mason's Brewing Company has expanded to Machias, Fox22 reported on May 2.

Mason's Downeast officially opened to the public just over a week ago, and Mason's Brewing Company owner Chris Morley says the reception has been overwhelmingly positive - to the point that they nearly ran out of food to serve during opening weekend and closed down temporarily to restock.

"I'm ecstatic. Just the way the community has embraced us. It's nice to be part of a tight-knit community - in the same way Brewer has been very good to us - we've become a community-based restaurant," said Morley.

The eatery has since reopened and features all the familiar favorites included at the Brewer location - with the exception of a few new dishes that have a touch of what Morley calls "Downeast flair."

"We've added lobster-tails to hamburgers, we've got a couple of crab specials. We have a fried haddock burger that's done in beer batter," said Morley.

Mason's Downeast sits at 78 Main Street in Machias - the former home of the Bluebird Ranch Family Restaurant, and is open Wednesday through Monday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Brewery news UK: Heineken to invest £39 mln to reopen more than 60 closed pubs in the UK
Brewing giant Heineken will reopen 62 pubs that were closed in recent years and invest £39m in refurbishing hundreds of sites across the UK, BBC reported on May 6.

The company said the cash injection into its Star Pubs & Bars chain will create more than 1,000 new jobs.

The UK pubs industry has been hard hit by closures both during the Covid pandemic and afterwards as cost of living pressures weighed on consumer spending.

Between 2021 and 2023, pubs have shut at a rate of 500 a year, according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).

Star Pubs & Bars currently operates 2,400 pubs. In 2019, it had 2,700 pubs across the UK.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said: "It would be unrealistic for any major leased and tenanted pub company to have all its pubs open at any one time."

They said the number fluctuates on a range of factors, but added: "Around 95% of ours pubs are open at any one time."

Star plans to renovate more than 600 pubs, choosing locations it said reflect how many of its customers have cut back on how often they commute into city centres.

Heineken said: "With working from home more commonplace and people looking ...More info on site
