Lithuanian breweries will be able to import duty-free about 20 thousand tons of wheat malt and unroasted barley within the first half of the current year. That was the decision taken by the Lithuanian government on February 25. Lithuania plans to produce about 16 thousand tons of malt this year, while its need in malt comes to 69 thousand tons. Lithuanian brewers association has asked the permission to import about 35 thousand tons of barley malt this year. Lithuanian breweries still can import about 15 thousand tons of malt from the European Union this year; the respective quota was settled in March last year during the negotiations with EU. Now the import of unroasted barley is conventionally imposed 30% and independently taxed 35%.
