AS National Pubs Week approaches, the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has hailed licensing reforms in England and Wales as a boon for well-run pubs and their customers, CAMRA announced on November 23.

CAMRA launched National Pubs Week in February 2003 to encourage more people to enjoy the unique atmosphere they have to offer. The Campaign believes this aim will be aided by the changes in licensing that come into force at midnight.

Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive said: “These sensible reforms will mean people can enjoy a pint of good quality real ale in their favourite pub without being forced to sup up and go home by 11pm”

“Allowing traditional community pubs to stay open later will help create a more relaxed and civilized night time environment in our town centres. This will mean those who simply want to enjoy a quiet drink with friends will be able to do so.”

“CAMRA’s hope is that this will encourage people who may have been hesitant to visit a pub in the past to return to their local, and National Pubs Week is the perfect time to call in for a drink and see what pubs can offer.”

National Pubs Week 2006 will run from February 18th to 26th and CAMRA is asking public houses across the country to sign up to the campaign by ordering free promotional packs that include posters, beer mats, press release templates and advice sheets. These can be ordered by calling 01727 867201 or online by visiting www.pubsweek.org

Mike Benner concluded, “The National Pubs Week campaign gives a spring board for pubs to organise and promote a variety of events throughout the week to encourage more trade. Pubs that have participated in National Pubs Week in the past have experienced the success of being more proactive and have gone on to promote more events throughout the year and this has helped to increase the stability of the pub businesses across Britain.”

In previous years more than 15,000 pubs have taken part by organising events to attract more custom and celebrate Britain’s fantastic pub industry.
