Centre County’s newest brewery, Boal City Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden, has officially opened and is off to strong start, Yahoo News reported on April 19.

The brewery, which is located on the Boal Mansion Museum grounds, includes a 1,000-square-foot and seven-barrel brew house and 1,500-square-foot taproom. There is additional outdoor space with picnic tables, other seating and games.

The brewery opened last Wednesday, April 12 for a “soft open” for family and friends, owner Gordon Kauffman said in a phone interview.

“We had great weather and we had great beer and we had a super successful first few days. In fact, the operations ran so smoothly that we ended up just opening it up to the public … on Saturday. We were open, we didn’t have a grand opening or anything like that. We just sort of filtered from the soft to the open to the public on Saturday,” Kauffman said.

They’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback, he said. People not only love the beer, but also the atmosphere and because it’s family and pet friendly with lots of outdoor space, he said.

“We had some fire pits rolling over the weekend, so it was great. It was a lot of fun. The space was being used as how I envisioned it,” Kauffman said.

Currently four beer options are available and they’ve all been equally popular, he said. Cocktails have also been a welcomed and refreshing drink during the warm weather.

The focus now is “getting more beer made.”

Mike Smith, the head brewer at Boal City Brewing, is working on a Gose; the next beer drop will hopefully be Friday (April, 21) or Saturday (April, 22), Kauffman said.

“The next step for us is … just get more beer into the tank. So there’s going to be a Gose, we’ve got a Pilsner in one of the vessels, we have another hazy IPA and a Belgian table beer. So those are the four that are in process right now,” Kauffman said.

Their first food truck setup was on Saturday, April 15 with Breakfast on Boal and they’ll continue to set up at Boal City Brewing moving forward; other food trucks will soon be added to the lineup, as well.

Boal City Brewing is located at 235 Old Boalsburg Road, Boalsburg. Hours for the brewery are: noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 5-9 p.m. Monday, 3-9 p.m. Tuesday, 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, 3-10 p.m. Thursday, 3-11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday.
