Brewery news

A Lonsdale Quay staple and one of the North Shore’s first craft breweries is likely closing for good, Vancouver Is Awesome reported on September 7.

Without public warning or explanation, Green Leaf Brewing quietly closed its doors last Monday (Aug. 29) after almost nine years in operation, leaving many former patrons wondering why.

While the brewery and its ownership have been silent so far, Quay North president Taylor Mathiesen said he expects the brewery won’t be reopening.

“Green Leaf Brewing elected to close,” he said, adding that his company has been working with the long-term tenant to hopefully reopen.

The closure was sudden, with Brewery staff posting regularly on social media throughout August. On Google, the business’s listing is marked as “Permanently closed.”

“We don’t have alternative plans for the location because we weren’t planning for the space to be vacant,” Mathiesen told North Shore News. “It’s a spectacular space.”

Many people associate Green Leaf, which opened in late 2013, with helping to drive enthusiasm for the local craft beer scene, which is thriving in the nearby Shipyards district today.

While the iconic Lonsdale Quay undergoes significant renovations, Mathiesen wanted to remind the public that the Quay and its businesses are still open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with some shops operating 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with reduced staff.

Mathiesen said that announcements for updates, including a new anchor tenant for a two-floor restaurant space on the waterfront side of the building, are coming later this year.
