The city of Osseo will soon get its very first brewery and taproom, CCX Media reported on April 28.

Thelema Brewing Co. will be located at 332 Central Avenue, situated between Union Speed and Style to the north and Dean’s Super Market to the south. The three owners, Brian Lasley, Ian Stanford and Joe Lien, have a combined more than 40 years experience in brewing.

The conditional use permit, approved by the city council on Monday, would allow a taproom, brewery, event space and restaurant. The owners say their space will not be just another craft brewery, but instead to “educate and serve the community” while “providing unparalleled libations of the mind, body, spirit and senses.”

In the applicant’s narrative, the owners wrote that “the craft beer scene has exploded the past 10 years and you cannot skip a rock without landing at another craft brewery.”

“So why make another one?,” the narrative continued. “We feel the scene is missing the edge that helped kick start it in the first place.”

The owners, one of whom lives in Osseo, say they selected the city for its historic downtown. They noted the building they chose is from the 1800s and featured one of the first Ford dealerships in the state.

“We aim to help grow Osseo’s legacy by providing a destination style brewery you typically only find in the larger cities in a small-town setting much like the older breweries of lore,” the owners wrote.

They also stated how their brewery will be different.

“Our brewery is not going to be another brewery full of state-outlined merchandise and outfitter imagery,” the owners said.

Thelema Brewing also plans to have a patio that will include putting up a fence. No opening date was specified.

In approving the project, Osseo City Council members expressed excitement for the development.

“Seeing Osseo as going back to this village that it used to be for a lot of the surrounding area, I think it’s so cool that this is coming up now,” said Osseo City Council member Alicia Vickerman. “I think it will be a really great addition.”
