Brewery news

Sly Fox Brewing Company has been making beer in eastern Pennsylvania since 1995. This May, it’s opening a 5,800-square-foot spot at The Highline on Pittsburgh’s South Side, NEXTpittsburgh reported on April 26.

There, head brewer Jon Ross will create experimental, small-batch beverages on a seven-barrel system, including the company’s first-ever sour ale.

“We’ve always wanted to brew in Pittsburgh,” says Mike Keefe, director of restaurant operations for Sly Fox.

Two years ago, a Sly Fox taproom debuted Downtown at 300 Liberty Ave. to showcase the brand ahead of the brewery’s build-out.

The Highline location at 46 S. 4th St. will operate seven days a week and have indoor seating for 140, with ample room for mingling in the 1-acre public outdoor space. Patrons can access the building from the adjacent 584-car garage — where they’ll get two free hours of parking — and follow the painted foxtail on the wall to the brewery.

There will be 19 beers and a hard seltzer on tap, along with an array of Pennsylvania-made wines and spirits.

The menu features appetizers, soups, dips, salads, wings and sandwiches. Pizzas boasting house-made dough and sauce will be baked in a stone hearth oven that’s visible from the dining room.

Once you’ve had something to eat and drink, you can play shuffleboard or hit the nearby Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a 33-mile course that has segments on both banks of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers.

As a company, Pottstown-based Sly Fox sponsors a lot of outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking events. Kyle Macauley, general manager of the Pittsburgh brewery, says Sly Fox is already forging partnerships with local running clubs.

Burgh’ers Brewing is also opening soon at The Highline, joining current tenants such as de Fer Coffee & Tea, Unison Bike Lab and Anytime Fitness.
