Mooresville will gain a new brewery in late May, the Charlotte Business Journal reported on April 27.

Matt and Andrea Gravina are transforming a 4,500-square-foot space into King Canary Brewing Co.

King Canary aims to be a family-friendly brewery and community gathering spot.

It will be located at 562 Williamson Road in Mooresville.

“I think people are looking forward to having a place closer to home,” Matt says.

The couple left behind their careers in corporate America to take a chance on craft brewing.

The former forensic accountant is now King Canary’s head brewer. He’s been homebrewing for years, taken numerous classes and completed course work to hone his skills.

Andrea will handle design, marketing strategy and community outreach.

“I think we wanted more of a creative outlet of a career,” Matt says.

They’re putting the finishing touches on King Canary, which is in a two-story house converted for commercial use. It sits on Lake Norman as well.

They bought that building in February 2017 and have been working to remodel it.

“We were looking for a place that wold not be like an industrial warehouse,” Andrea says.

The first and second floor each will have a bar and variety of different seating nooks. That means patio seating on the first floor as well as taproom space.

On the second floor, church pews have been repurposed and soft seating and a game room is planned.

The design incorporates reclaimed wood, grays and plenty to draw on the brewery’s bird theme.

It can be found in light fixtures mimicking bird cages — building on the fact that the canary’s spirit animal symbolizes a new beginning, adventure and light.

“We kind of identified with that,” Andrea says. “Every day is a new challenge.”

The project cut away the floor on part of the first level, exposing the basement and creating the room for a 10-barrel brewhouse and a number of 20-barrel tanks.

Foeders will allow for experimentation with wild and sour beers as well.

The former garage is also used for production capacity.

“Our goal is to not be a massive brewery,”

Expect a wide selection on the opening tap list. Matt is aiming for eight brews to be ready on day one.

“I’m a hops first guy,” he says.

That means an IPA and a double IPA top his plans. There’s also a pale ale, porter, amber ale and Berliner Weisse in the works.

“We’ve experimented with basically everything,” Andrea adds.
