USA: The beer industry has a total economic impact of $8.85 billion in Missouri and $5.2 billion in Illinois, according to a study released Monday, August 30, 2004 by Beer Serves America, an organization sponsored by the Beer Institute and National Beer Wholesalers Association.

In Missouri, the beer industry directly employs 20,200 workers, creates wages of nearly $700 million a year and creates a direct economic impact of $3.8 billion. The impact on suppliers is 24,380 jobs, $891 million in wages and a $2.9 billion economic contribution. The industry generates nearly $1.2 billion in total business and personal taxes and $140 million in consumption taxes, American City Business Journals Inc. posted on August 30.

In Illinois, the beer industry directly employs 36,700 workers, creates wages of nearly $774.1 million and creates a direct economic contribution of $1.9 billion. Total supplier impact is $1.36 billion. The industry generates $643.5 million in total business and personal taxes and $488.6 million in consumption taxes.

Of the five congressional districts in the St. Louis metropolitan area, Missouri's Third District benefits most from the beer industry. There are nearly 6,000 direct jobs, $402 million in wages and a direct economic contribution of $2.9 billion in the district, currently represented by Rep. Richard Gephardt.

Missouri's First District, represented by Rep. William Clay, had 2,060 direct jobs, $53.6 million in wages and a direct economic contribution of $217.9 million. The Second District, represented by Rep. Todd Akin, had 1,220 direct jobs, $26.8 million in wages and a direct economic contribution of $117 million.

In Illinois, the 12th District, represented by Rep. Jerry Costello, had 2,330 direct jobs, $52.4 million in wages and $124.5 million in direct economic contribution from the beer industry. The 19th District, represented by Rep. John Shimkus, has 2,190 direct jobs, $44 million in wages and a $104 million direct economic contribution.

Directly, the industry employs more than 830,000 nationwide, with a payroll of more than $14 billion, with federal, state and local governments receiving tax revenues in excess of $13 billion annually.

Nationally, the industry includes more than 1,800 brewers and beer importers, 2,200 beer wholesalers and 560,000 retail establishments. Directly and indirectly, the industry employs about 1.66 million workers, paying $47 billion in wages and benefits.
