Brewery news

Generations Brewing Co., the brainchild of Steven and Mark Winter, might open as soon as Memorial Day in Freeport, IL, Freeport Journal-Standard reported on December 14.

Mark Winter, president and CEO of Winter Construction in Freeport, is shaping plans for the 8,100-square-foot building that will contain a production area, taproom and beer garden. His son, Steven, started brewing craft beers about three years ago, shortly after finishing college, and rose to the role of brewmaster at the Galena Brewing Company.

The Freeport Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the plans for the 20-acre site on November 25.

“The location will make it convenient to move beer in and out of the city,” Steven Winter said. “We are about to begin contract brewing in Galena until our brewery is ready and should have beer available in stores by February.”

The brewery’s main focus will be on distribution with the majority of its beer being sold at grocery stores, bars and restaurants, he said. Mark Winter said that he estimates only 5 percent to 6 percent of revenue coming from patrons drinking beer in the brewery’s taproom with the rest coming from sales elsewhere.

Two of Generations Brewing Co.’s flagship beers will be the Live FreePorter, an organic porter-style beer, and the Pretzel City Amber, an amber ale that contains pretzels.
