Brewery news

Black Abbey Brewing Co. plans to open its doors this fall in Nashville, focusing not only on the beer but also on the community, The Tennessean reported on March, 20.

“The thing I’m most excited about is the idea of the community that surrounds craft beer in Nashville and how great that is,” said founder Carl Meier.

The brewery will serve Belgian and American-style beer, with the old Belgian-style feel.

“Trappist monks, who were from a monastery that brewed beer in Belgium, always had a focus on the community surrounding the beer,” Meier said. “We really love the influence of the creativity.”

He said the style is about “brewing who we are and brewing what we enjoy.”

And Meier is eager to introduce his brews to Music City.

“(Nashville) is very rewarding,” he said. “People are very quick to embrace not just new beer businesses but new businesses in general.”

Meier plans to open the brewery with four beers, introducing his takes on Belgian and American beers.

“The driving force between what defines Belgian and American beer has a lot to do with the yeast,” he said. “Belgians use a very specific strain of yeast. We will use some of that — we’re really excited about it. We will also use yeast very similar to other classic American breweries.”

After almost two years of planning and construction, the brewery is almost finished.
