Brewery news

West Sixth Brewing Co., which opened its Lexington tap room in April, announced on August, 16 that it's planning to more than double its capacity.

"We're really excited," said Ben Self, one of the co-founders. "The reception to our beer from Lexington and the surrounding areas has been really great.”

"It shows there's been a desire to have even more of our beer available in different places."

During the next few weeks, the company will install fermenters that will allow the brewery to finish 60 more barrels of beer, in addition to its current 45-barrel output.

The majority of the company's capacity is devoted to canning its India pale ale that's sold at a number of Central Kentucky retailers and restaurants. The company also announced a deal in June to enter the Louisville market.

Self said the additional capacity would allow the company to use its smaller fermenter tanks to experiment with more beers to be sold only in its tap room; he said he does not anticipate a second canned beer being released soon at retail. Fifth Street Honeybee Rye will be released at the Lexington Fest-of-Ales on August, 31.
