As per latest Delhi government statistics, beer has emerged as the most preferred drink in the city, NDTV reported on November, 29.

A staggering 11.78 crore bottles of beer were sold in the national capital in 2009-10.

In 2008-09, the people of the city had consumed 9.74 crore bottles of beer, it is reported.

In 2007-08, 8.4 crore bottles of beer were consumed in the city.

In its budget, the government had estimated a collection of Rs. 1,680 crore from the sale of liquor in 2010-11 which is 11 per cent of the total estimated tax collection of Rs. 15,582 crore for the financial year.

The officials said the collection will go beyond the estimated amount.

The government had collected Rs. 1,630 crore from sale of liquor in 2009-10 as against Rs. 1,420 crore the preceding fiscal.

They said the collection of revenue has registered impressive growth as the department has initiated serious efforts to streamline the tax collection mechanism.
