Brewery news

Molson's Montreal brewery was recently honoured by the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) Leadership Awards, Marketwire reported January 22. Spearheaded by Natural Resources Canada, CIPEC recognizes outstanding accomplishments by Canadian companies in improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"At Molson, we believe that good business practice entails consistent regard for the environment", said Benoit Maillette, Manager of Molson's Montreal brewery. "Social responsibility indeed forms an integral part of the values shared by our employees and has contributed handsomely to recognized corporate excellence within beer industry ranks."

The award given to Molson in the "Monitoring and tracking" category highlights the comprehensive energy-efficiency program implemented by the Montreal brewery as part of a strategy focused on operational excellence. Back in 2002, Molson's Montreal brewery installed over 200 meters designed to monitor the consumption of valuable resources such as water, electricity and natural gas.

"This initial step was essential to our program's success. You can't manage what you don't measure", explained Benoit Maillette.

In 2005, a corporate energy policy was established to reduce energy consumption per hectoliter of beer by 5 percent annually. The following year, the Montreal brewery had already reduced energy consumption per hectoliter by 5.6 percent in natural gas, 9.6 percent in water and 5.9 percent in electricity. Since 2002, as a result of these initiatives, the brewery has reduced energy consumption by 18% as well as lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Molson's energy conservation success is not exclusive to its Montreal brewery. Similar energy-efficiency programs have been implemented in all its Canadian facilities, resulting in substantial energy savings coast-to-coast.
