A member of the Parliamentary Committee for Investment and Trade has challenged Serengeti Breweries Limited to start using locally available raw materials for beer production, Guardian published October 17.

The challenge was posed yesterday in Dar es Salaam by special seats legislator Asha Mashimba (CCM) when giving the committee’s vote of thanks at the end of a tour at the factory.

Currently, Serengeti imports malt and hops from Europe.
She said: “We need you to empower local farmers so that they can produce quality raw materials of international standard.”

She said the move would make a significant contribution to the country’s development.

Responding to the request, the Chairperson for the SBL Board of Directors, Judge Mark Bomani, said Tanzania didn’t bar industries from using locally sourced raw materials.

We are ready even as we speak to use local produce if there are some farmers who are capable of producing enough quality raw materials, said Judge Bomani.

He said his firm was well aware that their competitors used raw materials produced locally. But this took them a long time to invest in the project, he said.
