Brewery news

Oskar Blues Inc. of Lyons plans to open a second Colorado brewery and double its beer-making capacity to accommodate recent growth, The Denver Business Journal posted on August 29th.

The beer maker has leased 18,000 square feet of space in a former Packaging Resources Inc. building in Longmont, where it will brew and package all of Oskar Blues' canned and kegged beer. The company's existing, 2,400-square-foot Lyons brewery will continue to make beer for its brewpub there.

Oskar Blues' production has grown more than 1,000 percent since it started selling canned beer in 2002, according to the company. The microbrewery is one of the first in the country to can its own beer.

Oskar Blues expects the new brewery to produce 30,000 barrels a year early, which is double the 15,000 barrels it expects to make this year. Ultimately, the brewer thinks the new operation will make 100,000 barrels a day.

The company plans to open its Longmont brewery, with a tasting room, at 1800 Pike Road in January 2008.

Oskar Blues' beers include Dale's Pale Ale, Old Chub, Gordon and One Nut Brown Ale. Owner Dale Katechis started Oskar Blues in Lyons in 1997, and added the brewpub in 1999. The brewpub, called Oskar Blues Cajun Grill & Brewery, also features live music.
