Brewery news UK: Alcohol duty overhaul nudges drinkers toward lower-strength products
Britain’s alcohol duty overhaul has started to shift parts of the drinks market toward lower-strength products, according to an official evaluation from HM Revenue & Customs and HM Treasury, which said the tax changes also kept government revenue broadly stable while simplifying the system for producers and sellers, Vinetur reported on October 29.

The report said prices moved largely as policymakers intended after duty rates were tied more closely to alcohol content. Higher-strength drinks became relatively more expensive, while lower-strength products were cheaper or saw little change. Officials also found signs that some consumers switched toward lower-strength options, especially in beer and cider, and that some producers reduced the alcohol content of products to qualify for lower duty.

The evaluation looked at the effects of the reform using HMRC administrative records, commercial sales data, surveys on alcohol consumption, and consumer research gathered after the new system took effect. The government had said the changes were meant to replace a more complicated structure based on product categories and volume with a clearer approach that taxes alcohol more directly by strength, measured as alcohol by volume, or ABV.

According to the report, the earlier system had become difficult to navigate and did not reflect alcohol ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Chongqing Brewery reports a year‑on‑year decline in both revenue and net profit in first three quarters of the year
Affected by weak consumer demand and insufficient momentum for premium‑segment growth, Chongqing Brewery reported a year‑on‑year decline in both revenue and net profit for the first three quarters. In the third quarter alone, its results fell by approximately 14% compared with the same period last year, marking the third consecutive quarter of negative growth, Cailian Press reported on October 29.

This evening, Chongqing Beer released its Q3 2026 financial report. For the first three quarters, the company's total revenue reached RMB 12.39 billion, down 5.12% year over year, while net profit attributable to shareholders stood at RMB 1.119 billion, a 9.8% decline from the same period last year. On the sales front, the company's total beer volume for the quarter totaled 2.5329 million kilolitres, down roughly 5.1% year over year, marking a shift from positive to negative growth in sales.

Regarding the pressure on its financial performance, Chongqing Beer stated that it was primarily attributable to sluggish on-premise sales, a slower-than-expected recovery in dining and social consumption, and disruptions from extreme weather conditions. These factors have collectively weakened overall beer sales momentum and intensified competition for existing market share.

Looking at the results by quarter, Chongqing Beer reported operating revenue of RMB 3.814 ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Alcohol duty rises again as pubs get lifeline
The drinks industry has condemned another inflation-linked rise in alcohol duty announced in the 2026 Budget, warning that higher taxes will put further pressure on producers and consumers. However, hospitality businesses have welcomed changes to business rates, including additional relief for pubs and thousands of smaller premises, the drinks business reported on October 28.

The drinks industry has condemned another inflation-linked rise in alcohol duty announced in the 2026 Budget, warning that higher taxes will put further pressure on producers and consumers. However, hospitality businesses have welcomed changes to business rates, including additional relief for pubs and thousands of smaller premises.

Alcohol duty will increase in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) from 1 February 2027, Chancellor John Healey has confirmed, prompting criticism from the wine and spirits industry.

The increase comes despite calls from trade bodies for a duty freeze due to rising production costs and continued pressure on consumer spending.

Miles Beale, chief executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), said: “No-one will be toasting yet another RPI increase on top of rising inflation. Instead of providing breathing space in a cost of living crisis the Chancellor’s alcohol tax hikes will further stifle British business and serve up nothing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Tilray’s beverage business poised for volume growth as Carlsberg deal date nears
Tilray Inc is positioned for higher-return growth as it prepares to begin brewing and distributing Carlsberg products in the US from January 2027, Jefferies said, raising its price target to $13 from $12.

The broker said Tilray’s restructuring of its US brewing operations, which reduced its production facilities from 10 to six, should allow additional volumes to flow through a smaller asset base, improving utilisation and returns on capital.

Tilray is best known for its cannabis business, but it also has a substantial brewing and beverage operation.

Jefferies estimates the Carlsberg partnership could add 8% to 10% to Tilray’s current beverage volumes, with the company targeting one million cases in the first year through its existing production and distribution infrastructure.

The partnership is due to begin on 1 January, providing an initial volume boost as products enter the distribution system, while the additional production should help spread fixed costs across higher volumes.

Tilray is targeting about $20 million in annual savings by financial year 2028 from its restructuring, with the full impact of its efficiency initiatives expected in that year.

Management reaffirmed its financial year 2027 adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation guidance of $68 million to $75 million, while Jefferies forecasts $69 million ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Britain’s oldest brewery Shepherd Neame to sell off land and move to a new site
Britain’s oldest brewery is to sell off land and move to a new site, in a £15m investment plan that seeks to safeguard the future of its operations, City AM reported on October 29.

Shepherd Neame, which is based in Faversham, Kent where it has been brewing ale since the 17th century, intends to put much of its existing footprint in the town up for sale in a bid to self-fund a new high-tech, scaled-down brewing facility.

The maker of Master Brew, Bishop’s Finger and Spitfire said the new brewery would be built on the site of its existing bottling hall and would open in 2029. The existing brewery will continue to operate until the new one comes online.

The plan ends a period of uncertainty for the Aquis-listed company’s beer-making operations after it warned last month it was weighing up its future in brewing amid surging costs and soft demand.

Jonathan Neame, chairman of Shepherd Neame, told City AM there were “three specific issues that ourselves, but frankly everybody else in the drinks industry is facing: declining volumes, rising costs…and in our case also we highlighted the need to modernize our plant.

“Our brewery’s been in the same location for a long time and ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria CEO raises concerns over economic uncertainty facing manufacturers
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guinness Nigeria PLC, Girish Sharma, has expressed concern over the frequent economic developments that significantly affect the various product categories in which the company operates, Marketing Edge reported on October 29.

He made this known during an interview with Channels Television, shared on its LinkedIn and was monitored by Marketing Edge, where he discussed the economic realities confronting manufacturers and their implications for business operations.

During the interview, Sharma highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s economic environment, noting that news about developments with significant effects on the markets in which Guinness Nigeria operates often raises concerns for the company’s leadership.

His remarks came amid discussions about the company’s financial performance, which recorded a more than 53 per cent increase in profit after tax, supported largely by a 62 per cent reduction in finance expenses, while revenue grew by 20 per cent.

Furthermore, the conversation examined broader challenges facing the manufacturing sector, including the rising cost of living and its impact on consumer spending, difficulties in sourcing raw materials locally from farmers, and the private sector’s responsibility to create sustainable employment opportunities.

Sharma’s comments underscored the importance of economic stability and predictability to manufacturers, particularly as businesses navigate changing ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Yanjing’s U8 beer surpassed its 2025 sales total by September
Yanjing U8, a beer label from Beijing Yanjing Brewery, sold 934.1 million litres in China from January through September, up 30% from a year earlier, and that nine-month total already exceeded the brand’s volume for all of 2025, according to the company’s latest quarterly report.

The company said growth picked up in the third quarter. U8 volume rose 38% year over year in July through September, faster than the more than 25% growth Yanjing had reported for the first half. The filing did not give an absolute third-quarter litre figure in the reproduced excerpt, but the change in pace showed stronger momentum during the summer quarter, an important period for beer sales.

Based on the reported 30% increase for the first nine months, U8 added about 215.6 million litres from the same period last year. That calculation is approximate because the company disclosed the growth rate as a rounded number. The reported percentage implies U8 sold roughly 718.5 million litres in January through September of 2025.

The update came in a market where investors often have to rely on broad company revenue figures that combine several businesses. Beijing Yanjing Brewery reported consolidated revenue of 14.0159 billion yuan in the first nine months of ...More info on site

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Distilleries Company takes over subsidiary’s beer brewing, distribution
Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC (DCSL) said that its wholly owned subsidiary, DCSL Breweries Lanka Ltd, has transferred its brewing, packaging and distribution activities to DCSL with effect from October 28, Economy Next reported.

“Accordingly, DCSL PLC will undertake the brewing, packaging and distribution of beer in addition to its existing activities of distilling, bottling and distributing hard liquor,” the company said in a market filing.

The company said it had obtained the approval of the Excise Department for the transfer of the relevant licenses.

“While this change would be convenient for the Company and the retail shops, it would not significantly impact the Group’s profits.”

After the transfer, DCSL PLC will produce and distribute licensed beer brands, including Heineken, Tiger, and Anchor, as well as the Group’s own brands, including Aliya, Bison, and DCSL beer, in the Sri Lankan market.

The stock was trading up 2.70 rupees at 54.70.

Barley news Canada: Farmer deliveries of major grains into commercial pipeline up 10.8% in September
Farmer deliveries of major grains into the Canadian commercial pipeline were up 10.8 per cent in September compared to the same month a year ago, at a record 8.05 million tonnes, reported Statistics Canada.

That compares with 7.26 million tonnes in September 2025 and marks the largest total for any month in data from the past 25 years.

Canola deliveries at 2.75 million tonnes were up 43.5 per cent from the same month a year ago. Meanwhile, all wheat at 4.12 million tonnes was relatively steady with the 4.07 million tonnes delivered in September 2026.

Saskatchewan accounted for nearly half of all deliveries, at 46.7 per cent, with 31.5 per cent from Alberta and 16.1 per cent from Manitoba.

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news World: Suntory Whisky's brand value rises 18% in 2026
Suntory Whisky's brand value has risen 18% to $1.1 billion in 2026, making it the world's fifth most valuable whisky brand, according to new rankings from brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance.

The Japanese brand climbed seven places to No. 25 in Brand Finance's Spirits 50 ranking, which measures the value of the world's leading spirits brands. Its Brand Strength Index score also increased from 63.8 to 65.7 out of 100, improving its rating from A+ to AA-.

The gains came as Japanese alcoholic drink brands broadly increased in value, even as several established beer, cognac and Scotch whisky brands declined. Brand Finance attributed Suntory's performance to continued demand for Japanese whisky and the company's 2025 performance in its home market. Its wider portfolio, including domestic whisky label Kakubin, also remained resilient.

Japanese beer brands also posted gains. Asahi's brand value increased 3% to $4.7 billion, keeping it at No. 7 among the world's most valuable beer brands. Kirin rose 8% to $2.3 billion, climbing two places to No. 13. Together, the two brands were valued at $7 billion, making Japan one of the five largest countries by beer brand value in the ranking.

Kaku Highball, another Japanese brand, ranked fourth among ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage ...More info on site
