India: Bira 91 faces fresh insolvency threat from glass supplier
|
In the latest chapter of the ongoing Bira 91 saga, parent company B9 Beverages has been served with a formal demand notice under Section 8 of India’s Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
The notice comes from glass bottle manufacturer Hindusthan National Glass & Industries (HNGIL) who are pursuing roughly INR 117.7 million (approximately USD 1.24 million) in operational debts they say remains unpaid, the Asian Brewers Network reported on September 7.
The notice itself does not amount to an insolvency petition. B9 Beverages now has ten days either to settle the amount or to demonstrate that a genuine pre-existing dispute exists. Failing that, HNGIL could take the matter to the National Company Law Tribunal to open a Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process.
At the centre of the disagreement are more than 5.1 million customised 650 ml amber glass bottles, equivalent to around 33,150 hl of beer.
The bottles were produced against three purchase orders placed in mid-to-late 2024. HNGIL says the stock sits at its facilities in Haryana, Puducherry and West Bengal, and that its custom specifications and Bira 91 branding leave it with little option to sell the bottles elsewhere.
A prior notice in May 2026 had asked for payment and a collection schedule within 15

Spain: Survey finds most Spanish consumers drank beer in bars or restaurants last month
|
Most Spanish beer consumers said they drank beer in bars, restaurants or cafes during the previous month, according to a new survey released on September 9 by the University of Malaga’s Center for Applied Social Research.
The study found that 92.7% of surveyed beer consumers in Spain had consumed beer in hospitality venues over the prior month, compared with 79.3% who said they had consumed it at home. That put out-of-home consumption 13.4 percentage points above at-home consumption in the survey’s declared incidence measure.
The findings point to the weight of Spain’s hospitality channel as a place where consumers encounter the product. They also suggest that beer consumption is closely tied to social occasions rather than only to routine household use.
Among respondents who drink beer, 82% said they had met friends to have beer during the previous month. Another 69.3% said they had done so with a partner, and 49.6% said they had consumed beer with family members. The survey also found that 74.1% had arranged a meeting specifically to drink beer, without needing another reason for the gathering.
The research was carried out from May 5 to June 8, 2026, and asked respondents to recall their behavior in the previous month. It

Canada: Distilleries and spirit makers likely to be hardest hit by US ban on Canadian alcohol imports
|
Distilleries and spirit makers are likely to be the hardest hit among Canadian alcohol producers as the United States proposes a broad ban on Canadian booze starting later this month, Bloomberg reported on September 10.
Craig Johnston, chief economist at Farm Credit Canada, said distilleries ship more than half of their overall product to the U.S.
“If you think about different categories of the alcohol industry - distilleries, wineries and breweries - it’s really distilleries which have significant exposure to the U.S. market,” he said.
Johnston said it will be challenging for many distilleries that sell in the U.S. market to find alternative homes for their products domestically, in Europe or elsewhere.
Canada’s retaliatory duties earlier this week prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to ban most imports of Canadian alcohol, among a long list of other items, starting Sept. 29.
Canadian whiskey and liqueur in bottles larger than four litres will be exempt from the ban; however, Cal Bricker of trade association Spirits Canada said there are not many four-litre bottles that get sold anyway.
“For all intents and purposes, it’s more or less a ban on Canadian whiskey,” he said in an interview.
Spirits Canada represents manufacturers, marketers and exporters in the industry.
The solution for distilleries
